Flat tire advise

I am planning a trip from Pa. to Florida for three weeks. concerned about flat tires on trip. My plan is to use BRP Road service on my new spyder and call for help, can give rxact location from GPS. any thoughts on my plan ?

Great idea but it doesn't hurt to carry a tire repair kit and small portable air pump with you just in case you are in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.

Very good advice! I was riding with a group of 15 a couple Sundays ago when one of the group got a flat. We were out in the country in the middle of nowhere in Iowa. One of the riders happened to have a repair kit (the handle and plug and a portable air pump). He found the nail, removed it, plugged the tire and pumped air back into the tire. we were on our way within a half hour. Made a believer out of me as I now purchased a similar kit.. Just an FYI.

Kits can be purchased at any auto store or the auto dept. at WalMart. Don't forget to add the air pump.

In the past BRP roadside has not been the best roadside available. Because of that...I recommend AAA Premium or Good Sam Platinum (just make sure the plan you have covers motorcycles). A great roadside plan gives me great peace of mind when I travel. Yep stuff happens, but knowing you are not going to have huge out of pocket expenses if the rare happening breakdown occurs :yikes:. I also carry the small compressor and plug/patch kit (and fortunately have never had to use!!):clap:. Happy travels. :yes::yes:

I like my Slime compressor which has the same connector as my batter tender. Use with plug kit and skip the goop. Around $35 at Northern Tool.

If your pump has a locking lever for the chuck, consider this extender: http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/valve-stem-extension. It 's better IMO than wrestling with the chuck lock on that poorly placed rear wheel valve stem and makes it easier to end up with the air you want in the tire and not some of it spewing out into the atmosphere when you disconnect the chuck. YMMV.

On a road trip it is wise to carry the pump and plug kit. Around town or close by not really needed..same goes for oil and gas...:thumbup:

Agree with the tire plug kit. I carry one and also have a little compressor just in case. A lot of folks also use "ride-on" tire sealant and I understand it works really good at sealing up holes. I have it in my 622 tires but haven't put it in the spyder tires. It is about 8 or 10 bucks a bottle I think.
I have plugged a Goldwing rear tire on the road and believe me, it is good to know you have a plug kit with you.

I added the "Baker Built" air compressor kit to my base 2010 RT so I have a compressor I can move about 15 feet from the Spyder. I have used it a couple times for others, but and hopefully never had to use it for myself. I do have a tire patch kit with me.

I have roadside assistance from AMA, Progressive, and Coach Net. The AMA and Progressive are just because it was part of the membership and insurance. A few years ago I was riding from VA to GA after having picked up a new to me bike. Didn't have it titled in my name yet so wasn't on my insurance. Had a tire go flat 12 miles from the NC border. Progressive wouldn't touch it because it wasn't on my insurance yet. AMA wanted to know where I wanted my bike towed to, but I wasn't familiar with the area and where a shop might be. So they couldn't/wouldn't help me. Fortunately my wife was at home with a good internet connection and was able to locate a shop (closed) where the owner was willing to come get me and put a new tire on for me (didn't have Coach-Net at the time). So you might want to call your BRP contact number and find out what they will do for you if you are stuck in an unfamiliar location.

The last comment is on plugs (I also carry an emergency kit with them). We had a guy come into the shop a couple of weeks ago. He had had a flat and a buddy attempted to patch it with one of those mushrooming plugs. Did not seal for them. Couldn't tell that they had done anything wrong from looking at the inside of the tire. So have a back up plan to the back up plan.

You'll spend forever waiting for one of those little pumps to pump up a tire, especially the rear tire. Assuming the pump doesn't burn up first...
