Yesterday was Winter Solstace. First official day of winter. The good news: The days will now be getting longer as we head towards Spring.

We are half way through the seasonal parking of the :spyder2:'s for those who have a six month down time.

Only 99 days until March 31. It did not take to long to get below 100 days. :roflblack::roflblack:

Happy Monday.

So... how much daylight do you have up there? Or are you in a total blackout? I have a hard time getting up before sun-up, but I can nap anytime.:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Chugiak AK: (About 20 miles N. of Anchorage, AK)

Today: 12/22/14 Sunrise 10:15 AM. Sunset 3.38 PM.

The change is about 6 minutes per day this time of year. One week and it will be 42 minutes to the good. One month and 168 minutes difference (2.8 hours).

For complete darkness, you have to go above the Arctic Circle (about 450 miles N of here). Barrow: the northernmost city loses sight of the sun between Oct and February. In summer, it never gets dark and the sun is always visible.

 That has got to be almost as disconcerting, as the total darkness...

A grade B horror movie was made about the "night monsters" and used Barrow as the supposed location, a couple years back.

The Alaska travelers that are coming in late June will be treated to no darkness at all. It will get "dusky" for a couple hours between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM for those who are going to stay up all night. :roflblack::roflblack:

You can ride at midnight and still see the sun above the horizon.

Thanks for the info, I keep forgetting just how BIG Alaska is. The wife would do well there in the winter, I think she could sleep through that 20 hours of darkness.:roflblack::roflblack: The truth is, she is a night person.

I was in Iceland in February one year. It was amazing how much longer each day got while we were there. Since the northern latitudes go from one extreme to the other, the changes are really big.

Except for the daylight time, the solstice doesn't mean much here. Our worst winter weather is in January and February.

The video trailer in #13 is pretty good. It gives you the idea of what all the North Slope fun is about. :roflblack::roflblack:

Remember going south out of Alaska and Canada. The day-light kept getting shorter and shorter. We had to keep checking into hotels sooner and sooner. Don't like riding in the dark...
