What on your thoughts of Spyders keeping their value? Seems our babies loose their value quickly!

Are you thinking of trading or selling it outright? For what year and model?

a 2011 RTL under 25k miles is bringing about $21,000

A typical problem with all motorized vehicles. Motorcycles in particular lose value quickly, accessories are even worse. 10 to 50% is what you find on used accessories.

Just like a car, figure you have lost 25% when you drive it off the lot. A 2014 was advertised and sold for $23K in three days or so. It had only 500 miles and some accessories on it.

I see I have lost $3K in two years on the 2011 and I purchased it for a couple thousand under list when it was new and a year old (2012).

As an investment, the Spyder sucks. As a fun machine to ryde--its great.

Either or honestly lol. I have a '12 rs and it seems hard to push for 11k. Not sure honestly if that is a good range or not. I feel it is worth 11k.

Any motor vehicle you buy loses a large percentage as soon as you drive it off the lot. Doesn't make any difference what it is.

Having just come from the used market as a buyer, location plays a huge role. I looked at 2010's and 2011's that ranged from 11,500 for an RS Limited SE5 with 2k up to $19k for an SE5 RT. I ended up with a 2012 RS-S SE5 with just under 2k for a little more that $12k. I really wanted an ST - but they are selling for almost new with the exception of a dealer with a gray base leftover discounted 3 grand.

As others have said, m/c lose a lot of value immediately upon sale. As for resale Spyder owners are probably much the same as I found with Goldwing owners, most are convinced their machine is worth 20% more than what buyers are willing to pay. That's why back in 2006 I bought a new leftover 2005 GL1800 for not much more than what most sellers were asking for years older GL1500 and 1800s.

Then occasionally you'll come across a really motivated seller like I did last winter. I bought a 2013 base RT with 600 miles for $14,000 plus $1000 for shipping from Wisconsin to Idaho. That was something on the order of $9,000 below MSRP but only about $2700 less than the local dealer would have sold me a new one out of the crate. Rebates were factored in. The seller was a Cadillac car sales manager so I suspect when he knew he a hot prospect on the line he better do what he needed to to make the sale.

When I was talking to the local Honda dealer about consigning my Goldwing we of course discussed pricing. He said he gives the seller a bottom line expected price, above which was to be his margin, generally 10% or less. He said the price needs to be low enough to move the bike within about 2 weeks. This would be during riding season which is the only time he would take a bike on consignment. If a bike doesn't sell within 6 weeks, get it out of there. It ain't gonna sell, and by then it's too late to drop the price. The stigma from being over priced is well stuck on the bike by then and lowering the price then won't help.

Check NADAGuides.com and Kelly Blue Book, kbb.com, for price suggestions. The trade-in price for my Spyder today is around $4000 less than the dealer resale price would be.

There are a few in the last decade that have not. Alas, not Spyders.

From my short experience trying to sell my 2011.....that is VERY high or wishful thinking.

In 44 years of owning motorcycles I have lost money on all but two of them. I actually really got "skinned" one time by trading in a one year old 2003 Yamaha Royal Star Venture on a 2004 Victory Kingpin Deluxe losing about six grand on it. I once broke even on a 1996 Honda Shadow ACE 1100, getting what I paid for it and came out a few hundred ahead on a Triumph which was totalled in a wreck. Other than that I have always had the normal depreciation losses when selling or trading. I now always consult the Kelley Blue Book and NADA websites to get the trade-in value and the sell outright value before proceeding on a new purchase.

Don't forget; BRP dropped the price on the Base RS SM-5 bike for 2014...

Last year in May when I decided to buy a Spyder, they seemed to hold their value pretty good.
New 2012 RTS (old dealer stock) were going for about $23K. 2013 RTS was about $25K and Limited's were almost $30K out the door. Every now and then you would see a 2012 demo model RTS going for about $21K. That was about the lowest you could get new from a dealer back then.

I decided to look at used. NO ONE was selling a used RT, RTS, or RTL for less than $20K private party or dealers. So they were holding value pretty well. I managed to find a motivated seller for my 2011 RTS for $16.5 with only 450 miles on it, and trust me that was a STEAL back then! I even checked after purchasing it for any others and what they were going for. Prices never came down for used even on 2010's. $19K was about the lowest I saw.

Prices did not change much UNTIL the 2014 RT's were announced! Overnight dealers were now selling 2013 RTS for $20K! Dealers that still had 2012's in stock were selling them for $18K and I saw one about a month ago selling a 2012 RT Limited NEW for $18.5K. Right now local dealers have 2013 RTS' for $19K and I saw a 2013 Limited for $20K just last week.

So the 2014's really dropped the value of the previous year Spyders a lot!

a 2011 RTL under 25k miles is bringing about $21,000

Not anymore! Used 2011 RT Limited person to person, out here, can be had now for about $16-18K and even those do not seem to be selling! I would say the Limited's took the biggest hit in value.

Ouch. Seems the RT line up is keeping the value. RS is struggling I feel.
