2014's and tires just don't mix...so to speak. There are many other car tires out there problem is hiw many miles are on them. Might search the site or there will be answers coming. Kuhomo stopped making that size but I know a member posted a list of sizes that will work...

Ordered Kumho 225 50R 15 ast today. I asked Manager at Discount Tires about tires being discontinued and he said he knew nothing about these particular being discontinued.

The Falken is a good tire... ;)
BUT...
As it wears down; it becomes a hydroplaning thrill ride!

It just sort of lost it's edge; rapidly...
At 8,000 miles; it suddenly seemed as if a heavy dew, could incite all sorts of entertainment...
But up to that point: :2thumbs:

EDIT: Please don't mis-understand me... I really liked that tire! You just had to be aware of how it changed as the tread wore down...

Bob, the Kumho had a tendency to hydroplane too as it got miles on it.

I have gone to the Kuhmo and prefer it over the stock tire on my 2014.

Does the Kumho hydroplane any more than the stock tire?

I must admit I do not get it: 12,000 miles on a rear tire is not enough?? I never had a 1300cc bike on which the rear tire went to this mileage!! Heck even on my Ural sidecar I am happy when I get 4000 miles out of my pusher! On one side we all insist a Spyder is like a motorcycle but we want to have Prius costs??

My last Harley (2011 Road Glide Ultra 1687cc) I got 21,000 miles out of the stock Dunlop rear tire. My 2003 Harley (Road King bumped to 1687cc) I was able to get 12,000 miles out of a Dunlop Elite tire. Both tires handled great so it is possable to get better milage out of a good handling tire.

The issue here seems to be that most of us who have had experience with pre-2014 :spyder2:'s have had good mileage on the OEM tires. I have received around 13,500 miles on four pre-2013's (rear tires). Don't know yet about the 2014.

Fronts have given me around 20,000 miles on 3 of the four pre-2014's. An alignment issue caused me to replace the 2011 fronts at 13,000.

All of a sudden, the tires are self-destructing way before we have been used to.

Obviously it is not the first replacement nor do we know how many replacements have been done. Unfortunately 6000 on a Kenda is average some get more some less.:dontknow:

All I can say is that I didn't remember hydroplaning on the Kenda tire that I had on my 2010 or on the 2013. After the initial tire I replaced them with the Kumho's and I did hydroplane some as the tread was wearing down. On my 2014 original tire and on the 2014 test Spyder that I had, I never got rained on! One of the pleasures of living in the desert.

Yes, but there is a big difference between the round profile of a motorcycle tire and the flat profile of the car/Spyder tire. The flat profile will distribute the weight over a far larger area so it should wear less.

I have 8000 miles on my Kumho on my 2014 RTL already with no sign of wear but I had just over 30000 on the same tire Kumho Ecsta AST 225/50 R15 on my 2012 RTL when I traded it in.... This time of the year I seldom ride without some rain and I have had no hydroplaning issues
with the Kumho. It is however not difficult to break traction with the 2014 RT additional torque. I have done so on both the original OEM and the Kumho

Most people just order it themselves and have the dealer install it (if they are willing to do so). I think I got mine from Wal-Mart and did in store pick up (on my 2011).

Sounds about right for the dealer charge (2 hours labor). I have changed a lot of motorcycle tires, but none on the spyder. I had a dealer in Durango, CO replace my stock rear with the Kuhmo so it should be awhile before I need to change it again. When that time comes I will do it myself. Good luck on the DIY and let us know how it went.

Well, the dealer won't order the Kumho tire for me. I did get the labor down to $125 since remind them that I have brought the Spyder and brought a tire from them 6000miles ago. So just ordered the tire and will decide if hubby does the tire change or the healer.

Is there a video on changing the tire

The manual will tell you to remove all of the tupperware in the back but you don't need to do that. Just jack it up high enough to roll the tire out under the mud flap.

Depending on where you ride, the Kumo definitely hydroplanes worse than the stock tire... At 10miles on my Kumo I lost traction in a light rain doing 70 mph. I crossed 3 lanes to my right and wound up on the shoulder, luckily it was Sunday morning and traffic was very light on the I5. It did this many more times after that even in very light showers so I rather change the tire more often as the stock tire holds much better all be it most tires can hydroplane if conditions are right.

I doubt it was hydroplaning after 10 mi. I have used Kuhmo's for a long time and they shed water very well. What MAY have happened is the tire mold release coating has not worn off yet. All tire molds have a non stick coating to help remove the tires. That is why they are so shiny when new. It takes a few miles (more than 10) to get rid of the coating then the rubber will dull on the tread and stick to the road better.

Did you have to remove wheel bearings to balance the tire ?

Just got an email from the company I ordered the Kumho tire from, it is backed ordered. It seem like all the other web site doesn't have them available or do not carry them any more.
Now my next question has anyone put a 205 50R 15 on the Spyder?

Bob Denman

:agree: The overall diameter, is about as close as you can get to the OEM...
It's just a little bit skinnier, but the taller sidewall will allow for a bit smoother ride.

Try playing around with some different sizes, and you'll see how changing the section width or profile of the tire affects the circumference!

While I'm not yet a Spyder owner I can relate some knowledge pertaining to my last rear tire change on my Victory Cross Country. I went from a 185/60 tire to a 180/65 and gained 9mm in diameter. Not a big gain but the taller sidewall does indeed ride smoother. The narrower tread width is negligible and the circumference is only about 2.5 percent bigger. I'm not sure how many percent a Spyder nanny can tolerate but a couple percent isn't very much.

I almost always give the Tech a gratuity for his service, and sometimes the Svc Mngr too, depending on the service. 5000 miles on the OEM and it is junk. I am not a "burnout monster" so that number is unexceptable. Getting my Kumho put on right now. The center of the OEM is almost completely smooth and there goes the theory that the flatter tire would wear better. These soft OEM's mushroom out in the middle as they spin so the center takes all the ride. The edges look almost new, I am talking several inches from the edge too. OEM's need more strengh to hold its shape... useless tire...

What's stock size?

225-50-15 is stock.

To Gonkers above: car tires will wear in the middle also if you run a lot of air. I had a General Altimax wear that way till I lowered the pressure. I ran as little as 20-22 lb. Got 22 in my current Pirelli and with 3500 on it so far its wearing evenly.
I ride one up only. Other folks may have different ways to attain better wear, but the above has worked for me on two previous tires.
