We are finally taking a vacation, I mean a real vacation that will last 8 days. :yes:We have not been on a vacation in a long time, always busy with work or taking care of family for the last 10 years.

We are riding to Key West with two couples that we ride with regularly. We're taking the GL1800 and the RT622 on this trip. Don and Pearl will be on their GL1500 and Richard and Bobbie will be on their HD TriGlide. The first day will be a push to get to Mobile Al.

It's been raining all week here in Poplar Bluff but should stop today.

Day -1

Wash and prep the bike and the trailer.
Pack the trailer.
Figure out how to transfer photos from the android phone to the tablet.
Check the jumper battery charge level.
Check my tools.
Make sure covers and frog toggs are in the trailer.
Take Cocoa and Nieve to the nice kennel lady.

Scratching head to think of what I forgot.

If you are leaving today, Friday, then you couldn't have picked a better time. The temperature should drop down into the low to mid 80's here in Central, Flarda. It had been in the low 90's. The skies are "chamber of commerce" blue.

I'm not sure if you're in a hurry to get to the keys. If not, take the roads that are on the west side of Flarda. You will see parts that will reflect on what this state used to look like 50 years ago.

That was my plan to be able to share some photos with all the fine folks here. Gotta test it out here first but I think AirDroid is my key.

It's kinda neat how this trip got started... me and the missus were sitting on the couch watching Andrew Zimmerman down in Miami at a Cuban hog farm that also makes and sells whole hog cookers (she bought one) that the Chinese used in Cuba in the 40's and 50's and the guys dad used to tell him about them but that's another story. My wife is Puerto Rican and went to grade school in Miami and she said something about going to Miami one day and my response was "I've never been to Key West". She said do you want to go and I said yea. Within 30 minutes she had been on the phone to Bobbie and Pearl and the next thing I knew we were all going to Key West.

If you're going through Mobile, there's a couple of good seafood places where the U.S. ships are docked. I can't remember the name.

If you are headed to G'ville from Mobile and then to Miama, it looks like you'll be way east of the west coast to stop by a restaurant called the Riverside Cafe in St. Marks, Flarda, (great food, but service is a bit slow) OR a nice seafood restaurant (the name escapes me right now) in downtown Steinhatchee, Flarda.

It appears as though you'll be taking I-75 south from G'ville. I'm not sure where your stops will be from there. I will say that there is a great little place in Williston, Flarda, (a bit southwest of G'ville) that has great home cookin.

Bottom line is if you're trying to make time, then ignore everything I've said.

In Mobile we are staying on the North East side of town near the airport and eating at Red Lobster. I used to live in Pascagoula MS so I know Mobile and the gulf coast well. It will be a long day for sure... by changing our first day from Gulfport MS to Mobile AL we knocked 97 miles off the second day so it is only 389 miles now. I added your info to my trip things to do/see. Only 2 days are a "drive like you stole it" day so the rest should be pretty relaxing.

We are all packed and ready to go...

Thanks

We were there in Feb and I wish I was there now... Here's our tip for one of the great restaurants in the Keys and with reasonable prices too...

"Sparkys" in Key Colony near Marathon. Located in a marina, on the water, and has Happy Hour everyday with huge .25 Peel & Eat Shrimp, plus a lot of other great seafood dishes.
One day a week they make their famous Gumbo but it is usually gone before dark.

Enjoy the keys... its a great place to hangout!

We were heading north on I75 south of Atlanta, I'm in the middle lane behind Don and Pearl and a Toyota car of some kind was slightly ahead of Don in the inside lane. We are cruising along at ~70mph and I see the grill of the Toyota come off and fly up an over the car. It's spinning like the kites you used to see at the beach in the 80's. The spinning has gyro stabilized the grill so it stays horizontal as it flies back. I think to my self wow the grill came off that Toyota... quickly my thoughts change as I see the trajectory of the grill is sending it into my lane. I do some very quick calculations on lift, drag, gravitational attraction and trajectory and determine that there is a 96% chance that I'm going to eat the grill. I'm not hungry at the moment and don't care for plastic anyway so not having much time to think about what I might do I decide the thing to do is take the defensive posture of tilting my head to head butt the grill and hopefully send it up and over my wife who is sitting behind me.

My calculations were off a few inches in the vertical and the grill hit the Goldwing on the nose just below the windshield. It broke in two pieces instantly with one spinning clockwise and flying to the outside lane and one spinning counter clockwise and flying to the inside lane.

All of this happened in less than 5 seconds... not even enough time to take any actions to avoid it. A real eye opener for sure.

That is scary.
You know all those tire casings you see on the road?
Well I was beside an 18 wheeler and the tire casing started to come off and flew right past me.
Dang I hate it when the universe demonstrates its randomness.

Hi Roger,

And I hate it when random idiots are near you. Later on the same day we are cruising down the interstate and a car comes from the on ramp and pulls into the outside lane. The rear tire of the car is just about even with my front tire. I'm enjoying the ride and have my feet up on the highway pegs but for some reason I'm keeping the car in the corner of my eye as it seems to be making a move to my lane. Sure enough it just changes lanes and I grab a big handful of front brake and my front tire just misses the bumper by a few inches... damn idiot drivers.

I hope you got the tag number of the Toyota so his insurance could pay for the damages.

That is the common room of the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at last night. It's a really neat place an old mill that was in operation up to '95 and has most of the equipment still in place. If your ever near Lynchburg and want a place to stay I highly recommend it.

Also right down the road is a fun place to eat Granny Fishes House (http://grannyfisheshouse.com/), if you don't know where it is you will never find it. And they really do have the best hush puppies in town...

It happened so fast there was not time to focus on the tag... good thing the GoldWing is tough or the Toyota grill is weak as I can not find any damage on my GoldWing.

The final tally is 3,096 miles in 9 days. This trip really opens my eyes to what is possible to do while I still can. I've been riding motorcycles since 1968 but back in the day you could not go far till all your body parts were numb riding things like X6 T250 or my GT380 much less my Honda 50 Super Sport. I do think that I rode the Super Sport the most till I wore it out then graduated to a Twin Jet 100 vibrator. Longer trips started to work there way in with the 98 GL1500 and now with the RT and GL1800 we can travel more and enjoy it more. The RT622 is the way to go for us as the wife can pack way too much and I can fit it in.

Glad to be home...

We made it to Lynchburg and waiting our turn to tour the Jack Daniels distillery.

Small world. We were there the same day and just around the same time. I think our tour started at 1:30 or so.

Man I loved hanging by the cave entry. So nice and cool on a warm day!

The Spyder got lots of attention downtown when we parked right there on the square

Yea, the spring was cool and the fermenters were warm. Quite a place to tour. We went through about 12:30. I didn't see any Spyders in the parking lot... we were in an overflow lot for an overflow lot lol. I think the tour would be better on a workday as you could see the single barrel packing line running and it would be less crowded. I'm glad I don't have to pay their taxes... 8 million every two weeks.

Yep, you have a product that sits for at least 7 years and you can't keep up with demand ... :yikes:
