What is the air intake resonator supposed to actually do? I mean other than take up space.

The huge size of it serves two functions, 1 it acts like a storage chamber for filtered air and 2 it is a noise suppressor for the intake system. Some have said that if you remove it you will get a louder engine noise at high throttle. :dontknow::dontknow:

Noise suppression. Engine has a nice throaty sound without it.
