View Full Version : Got my order in today for the Elio!

So, I know this is not a Spyder related post but this vehicle will be parked in my garage next to my 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT-S, so that has to count for something. Elio Motors is now taking reservations for an 84 MPG 3-wheel "motorcycle" that will sure look familiar to all of us here. I just purchased my spot in line for ownership of one! Very cool. I will hopefully be able to make it to Phoenix on Thursday to sit in a prototype. Best thing is it's American made and based out of Phoenix, AZ at this time. 84 MPG on highway even with the AC on....come on, why couldn't Can-Am have done this. And it's even 200 pounds heavier than an RT-S. An 8 gallon tank and 672 mile capacity....Holy Cow. Can it really be true.

Thoughts? Anyone out here in SpyderLand put an order in for one? Will you replace your Spyder with it? I hear they will have sunroof options, and who knows, maybe even a convertible Elio someday, lol!

What is the agreed delivery date for your new Elio car?

AZLife
03-04-2014, 11:19 PM
Well, they start manufacturing the last quarter of this year. With delivery set for 1st quarter 2015, so they claim. There were 8 different level reservation groups, and I am in the 4th level group ($100 non-refundable deposit and a free Elio t-shirt). They claim 250,000 units can be produced each year in the old Hummer plant in Louisiana. So I'm thinking delivery would be the end of 1st quarter 2015 or 2nd quarter, since I am around the 11,000 person, give or take a hundred or so. Worst case scenario I lose $100 if I change my mind and I bought a $100 tshirt, lol.

I hear what your saying my fellow SpyderLover brother....But as I mentioned, it's basically a free spot in line to buy one first, if you purchase this really cool looking t-shirt today for $100. And the tshire will be delivered this month ;). With free shipping no less :roflblack: Gotta keep the faith and be positive!

Yep, you understand this correctly. I imagine it would be no different than putting $1000 deposit down in 2013 for a 2014 Spyder to be delivered "sometime" in 2014. Even if you got a delivery date, would it really matter when it comes down to production delays, recalls, other issues, etc, etc.

Wishing you the best of luck on your Elio. This is now about the fourth time the production date has been moved up. Last was December 2014. Now first quarter 2015. There is a closed thread on Elio on the site here--you may find the reading to be interesting. Type in Elio in the search engine. Worst case scenario--you bought a $100 t-shirt.

I have two on reserve, I might lose $2,000. But I lost a lot more then that on my spyder

Really hope it works out for you! Ever heard of the Aptera? Similar to the Elio and reservations. Hard to find any info regarding what happened with reservations that people paid. Company's take reservations to build money in HOPES of getting the company moving in the right direction. In the case of the Aptera, that didn't happen. They stopped taking reservations and they went out of business. It now seems they were bought under a new name. Now I am sure there is more to the story that people could argue but....I say again, I really hope it works out for you!

The wife and I are going to Daytona Sunday to see them up close, we have been watching them for quite sometime and
are interested in them but just can't bring ourselves to put any money down on something we haven't seen or driven,
but we will continue to watch and wait for them to go into production before we jump on the band wagon.
But I do hope they turn out to be what everyone that has laid out money for hopes they will be.
Good luck,

The latest I read was that production was now moved to 2015. They were going to concentrate on filling all the current orders.

Mockups still with plastic engines? Seems they are running out of time on this one. :dontknow::dontknow:

I still remain one of their harshest critics and my opinion has not changed from my postings in many earlier threads. I just cannot jump on board, based on what I have seen and read. Been following this for about three years now.

EDIT: Have also mentioned that I hope I am wrong. I do not want people to lose their deposits or end up with a machine that is unreliable and unserviceable. Back when the Yugo first came out, the dealer in Duluth lasted a whole month.

This entire episode may go down in history as one of the biggest scams in history -- most certainly one of the longer ones.

Seriously... these guys have been caught in outright lies about property they secured; among other things. It is a wonder they are not in jail yet.

But what the heck... if they can make a vehicle that can do everything they say it can, at the price they claim they can sell it for; then they'll sell far more than they can make. Personally, I am not holding my breath.

I am not trying to be offensive with my comments; but there have been far too many delays, lies, and changes in plans with this project for anyone to take it serious; while they continue to take money from people gullible enough to send it to them

If I am wrong; I'll be the first to subject myself to fifty lashes in the public square. In the meantime, I hope most people are wiser with their money.

Most don't think of early depositors as fools. Elio has been using a very slick advertising campaign. There is one going on as we speak, on the Yahoo home page. Nothing new, just a commercial that they got someone to sponser as a public relations thing.

The history of the product, the claims, the never ending delays--these are the things that I speak about. If it comes off as advertised, I have said many times that I will be one of the first in line to admit that I have been wrong.

I wish him luck, though I would have strong reservations based on past personal experiences. I put down a deposit on a couple of different vehicles that were promised to be produced, but never panned out. After a few, to several months, I got my deposit back. In those cases, there were no "free T-Shirt", so they could not defend keeping the deposit to my credit card company, because no good were delivered.

However, I suppose in this case, the company can claim that you purchased a T-Shirt for $100. If you say you want to return the T-Shirt, they may charge you for shipping and a restocking fee, which in the end, may not leave you with much of a refund. I hope you get the vehicle, but it isn't easy getting a vehicle like that on the road here in the U.S.; as I'm sure the company has/is finding out.

One of the deposits I made was on a Aptera (California Company) back in 2007. Those vehicles still aren't on the road, and since then, the company has changed direction more times that I can count; to the point I have no more interest in them.

No, you're right about that; although there was news just last year that they were trying to bring it back:
http://www.gizmag.com/aptera-independent-production-us/27868/

Here is an interesting article that talks about the events leading up to their closing in 2011, although by this time, I was no longer interested in it:

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1070490_aptera-collapse-how-why-it-happened-a-complete-chronology

It also supports the reason why I am doubtful Elio will be successful as well. It takes too much money, and there are just too many regulations and liabilities associated with a machine like that. It's too bad too. I would love to see more alternative options for transportation on the road.

To put Elio money deposit in perspective; I lost $10,000 trading in my 2013 Spyder RT-S SE5 only 9 months old, on a new 2014 Spyder RT-S SE6.
I am sure many other 2013 RT Spyder owners lost similar on 2014 RT trade in.
BRP kept the 2014 RT 1330 in line triple motor & SE6 trans a total secret until Sept 2013.
Basically lying to Spyder owners like myself who bought the 2013 RT, in order to sell their heat problem 2013 RT's with a 2014 frame under it.
Life is too short to worry about a few $$$.
The 2014 Spyder RT-S SE6 has an awesome torque triple motor, smooth shifting trans, improved handling, gas mileage, etc!!!

Right you are. Elio is not the only money pit. At least they are not requiring full deposits in advance.

RE: Spyders: I figure I lost about $8K when I traded my fully farkled 2008 on the 2010 RTS Premier. I also figure I am down a couple K on my latest trade for a 2014 RT-S.

In retrospect though--With the Spyders, I have always been a happy camper. I love the product and realize that they are way more expensive to own than a lot of other cycle type vehicles.

Not so sure the Elio people will be as happy. Quality, longevity, serviceability, are all items that are yet to be determined in the saga. :bbq::bbq:

Absolutely correct. We are comparing apples to oranges.

On second and third reading, I am also thinking that my talking about loss in value when I traded on successive :spyder2:'s may be construed as a complaint.
