Why are they better when they get a bit over 1/3 rd of the miles of the filter they replaced? The old filter was supposed to go for 12,000 miles and the improved ones have to be replaced at 4600 miles. Is this a true set of facts or just a ploy to sell more filters? Does anyone have the info? What say you Ron?

The old filters were never claimed to go 12,000 miles. Originally the maintenance schedule called for them to be changed at every other oil change...or every 6,000 miles. Problems with shifting and filter collapse were traced to that schedule and it was altered to require changing the transmission filter at every oil change (3,000 miles). Continued sporadic problems led to the larger, stronger filter and the stronger oil filter. That in turn led to extending the changes to 4,600 miles. I'm not sure where you got your numbers, but it is time to read the latest version of the maintenance schedules again.

:hun::hun:12,000 miles on a change of the filter for the tranny? Makes no sense for the few dollars they cost not to change them :gaah: Save a dollar on the filters and spent 100s on the tranny...makes no sense to me!

The OP is correct the original recommendation was 12,000 miles. The rest of your comments are correct.
From my own experience with my 09GS I would experience shifting issues before I reached 3,000 miles with the old filter but could go the full 4,600 with the new.

This is from the 2010 RT owners manual.

BRP should not have called it a transmission filter because none of the oil that flows through it goes directly to the transmission. In the 2013 manuals they are calling it a HCM filter and that is a far more accurate name.

Thanks guys I never received a revised sch. Only had my Operators Guide and the new main. that came out last year with the 4600. So thought the 12000 was a real thing.

Just so I'm clear on the new maintenance schedule for the SE5's. We are suppose to change both the filters at 4600 miles correct?

4600 if you have the new type filters, 3000 if you don't...both filters.
