Has anybody ever tried a windshield wiper on their bikes windshield? Thought I saw somewhere in the "dot com" stuff that you could get a wiper for the bike. Don't think I have ever seen one on a bike tho. comments? info? have you got one?

Would wipers scratch the plexiglass wind shield?

I've found regular use of water repellents such as Rain-X works fine, without needing mechanical wipers. Keep an eye on the contents for comparability with your windshield, and always apply to a test patch just in case it does smoke the windshield.

That's pretty cool. It might work out pretty well on an RT...

Hi Sharon, you got to be careful with plexiglass.

Contact Rattigan_Roger, he put a WW on his RT.

Sharon, Roger has added one to his Spyder last year. He hasn't posted much about it since installation, but here's the thread about it ;)

Thanks Dave i checked into that site and PM'd him. So may get an answer soon. I gather you are not going to get a wiper???

I look over my windshield, not through it. I use it to shield me from wind, rather than as a window.

Well Good For You  Hard to believe as it is, but we are not ALL the same and some of us may choose to ryde differently than YOU ;) But thanks for sharing something so unsolicited  Now back to the subject at hand ;)

It was a serious consideration last year, when we were still using the OEM Barn-Door of a shield

But since we've discovered how much better our rydes are now, with using the shorter but wider Cal-Sci Shields, I doubt seriously if we'd ever go back, at least not without modifying the OEM first. The Cal-Sci's also have a hole in the center bottom area of the shield, and even tho it looks a bit odd, it works really well at relieving the back-pressure and with it being wider, we also get better coverage from the wind, resulting in less noise and less turbulence. Here's a link to their site http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/SpyderRTprod.html
and we actually were able to pick two of them up, gently used, from fellow members here on the forum  so we actually have a clear Medium & also the Tinted Shorty as well  If we had the funds and were ordering a brand new one, I'd personally order the Large size which would give even more coverage area than we have now, so less adjusting of the shield would be needed like we do now, when ryding in sub-freezing temperatures

:thumbup:The clear Medium is pictured above & the TINTED Shorty is below ;)

And with these being much shorter than stock, I don't think there'd really be room for a wiper on them. Tho ryding in the rain is still an issue, and I just asked for recommendations about a RainX type of application to help with water shedding, but made for PLASTIC shields, and Magdave gave a Glowing Endorsement to a product called Rejex (http://www.rejex.com/rejex.html) and we have a bottle on the way.

Hopefully this stuff will work well, and there will be no need for a wiper then  And whats even better (if it works as claimed) is that this stuff is made for the entire byke  We're suppose to get it on Thursday & if your interested, I'll let you know how it works for us ;)

I'm not sure how long the Spyder's windshield could take the wiper before it got marked up by it...
I'll also look over it when it's raining...

In the past there were several companies that made wipers for the
motorcycle world, I even tried them on one of my GoldWings but they
will destroy your windshield in no time, scratch's every place the wiper touches
I tried elect. and manual type thinking the motor was the cause but it is the
wiper blade and any dirty or dust on the shield that does the bad stuff.
Plastic or lexan just don't work well with wipers.....

If I had my druthers; I'd "druther" look through raindrops, than scratches!

Don't know if it would work but what a great conversation piece !!

Interesting thread for sure....
Many have commented that wiper will scratch a polycarbonate shield, and that is correct. You can, however run a wiper on an F4 Customs shield if you wanted to have something to clear away rain at lower speeds. The hardcoat will hold up to a GOOD wiper, but with an F4 shield, you will not need the wiper because the rain shedding is above and beyond any other aftermarket shield available. The clarity is perfect, allowing you to look through if you like. We offer the Plus 3 (3" taller, 5" wider) than stock, Stock, or we offer the Sport (3" shorter than stock) for those who want to look over. These can be ordered with a vent or with the stock Can-Am vent holes, and can be tinted or clear. Give us a call with your questions!

Oh, BTW, check out www.peerclear.com (http://www.peerclear.com) for motorcycle windshield wiper........

I am terribly sorry to have caused offense . . . it was not my intent. Long ago, when I went through a safety class, they stressed that we should look over, not through, the windshield. It was repeated in a trike class I took in July. Please forgive me for having a valid opinion.

How about something for the helmet shield? I've been afraid to use anything like Rain X on it since forum folks gave the thumbs down on it! For me, the helmet shield is more of a problem and using the hand to wipe it just makes it worse.

Somwhere in the deep, dark, smelly recesses of my fertile mind; I recall hearing that Plexus was okay to use...
But let's get an independent confirmation on that first!
I've been known to fib a little.. :opps:

Thank you RR for the update. I have wished for a WW for motorcycles for many years but the thought of getting the windshield scratched kept me from pursuing the subject much further.

With my height, I am always looking through the windshield even in it's lowest position. If I am riding my airhawk or sheepskin seat, then I am looking over. Riding through bad rain and trying to see through the droplets are neither fun or safe--but I have done it from time to time.

To be sure, the F4 Customs windshield WILL shed rain like no other aftermarket shield. I neglected that fact as we were discussing w/wipers a few days ago. You CAN look through our windshield in the rain, making for a safer and less-fatiguing ride. If you like, feel free to use Rain-X, but you will likely not need it. May be the answer for some of you....

and see no need of an apology. Good advice, some people should relax a little.

No. 1 if you use Rain X make sure it's for plastic. The normal stuff can and will ruin you shield.

No. 2 the video is of a Goldwing, most likely a Japan model where it is law to have wiper if you have shield in front if you.

No. 3 I had a Jeep hand crank version on my Gl1500 years ago. With a 1" post on either side of shield, the wiper rested on one side and I grabbed the handle to clear/move the wiper from side to side. The post kept the blade from falling too far down.

Now a days I look over and like the adjustable shield.

I thank EVERYBODYS comments. I am too short to see over the shield even at it's lowest. Have used rain ex on it. Plex stuff, my hand, (that's not easy either!!! too short!) Pledge, wax, turtle wax. Have used stuff probably shouldn't have and of course by the time I get into a downpour or misty stuff everything has been "blown" off, sun dried, and gone!!! Am too cheap to get a new or diff shield. Soo am sorta stuck with what I have and probably just quit driving while it's raining. Sometimes just have to plow thru tho. Guess the WW is out tho.

People have cut 1/2 to 1" from top of shield for just that reason. Maybe someone who has done it will pipe up with the "how to do it".

if you have the larger shields where you look through them, then would help. Need to consider all the points above as to scratching durability etc. If you ryde a lot in the rain and repellants don't do the trick then go for it. For all the others looking over the shield, it will do nothing for you. You have to look at helmet shield sweepers or repellants. Heavy rain pretty much washes off, light rain will accumulate but a tilt to the left a nd right blows it off..at least for me..

Ordered the Peer clear and it does not fit the Spyder RT. When the windshield is up the motor is in the middle of your windshield. You can not lower the windshield without having the motor in the middle of it.
