View Full Version : 2014 Spyder Changes

Was just informed by BRP of some additional changes to the 2014 models, thought it would be of interest to many of you.

1) The 2014 RT-S and RT Limited models will no longer have the push-button electronic front trunk release. They are going to have the same “push the key and turn” trunk release as all of the other Spyders. This can be done if the engine is running or not.

2) The 2014 RS models will now have the gas-charged FOX Podium shocks up front (like the RS-S and 2014 STs) instead of the SACHS shocks.

3) 2014 RS & ST models will be coming with a SOFTER rear coil spring than what the 2013s came with. If you want a stiffer spring on a 2014 you can install the standard spring from the 2013s. If you want a softer spring on a 2013, you can install the standard spring from a 2014. Both are progressive wound springs, but the 2014 version has both softer start and finish rates compared to the 2013 version.

Thank you for the information. Time will tell how well these go over with the general public.

I for one, would miss the electronic trunk release. Not sure what a different spring will do. Hope it does not add to the recent woes that some have mentioned about getting only 2500 miles on rear tires. Tire mileage is a biggy for me. At $400 for a rear tire change over (parts & labor), I am not to keen on changing rear tires every other month. Not going to happen here.

In a letter dated October 25, 2013 from Martin Ethier, Can-Am Spyder Product Manager, it says, and I quote, “The 2014 Can-Am Spyder RT-S and RT Limited models no longer have the push-button electronic front cargo release. As for all other Spyder roadsters, to open the front cargo simply push and turn the key, whether the engine is at stop or running.” This statement is under a heading titled "Can-Am Spyder RT-S and RT Limited - front cargo release".

In reading this statement, it says the 2014 RT-S and RT Limited models no longer feature the push-button front cargo release. I would tend to believe the Spyder Product Manager on this one. I suppose there might have been a mistake in the French to English translation? I'm just sharing with you first hand information so go ahead and argue about it if you want to, don't shoot the messenger.

Has any one heard any thing about blue tooth operation on the new models? I hope by now that BRP would move into the modern communication world. Wireless Bob

Have you ever heard the part about "specifications subject to change"? The 2014 Owner's Manual you are looking at was published before the October 25 letter from the Spyder Product Manager. I just checked the consumer website and that spec sheet (Package Options under RT-S) also still lists the push-button release, so that website has not been updated. But I also just looked at the revised spec sheet for the dealers, and in the exact same place it no longer lists the push button release, so the dealer version of the spec sheet has been updated. If you want to believe outdated information, go ahead. The Can-Am Spyder Product Manager told his dealers on October 25 that the RT-S and RT Limited would no longer have the push-button release and that their spec sheets would be revised, which they have been. That was three days ago. The owner's manual you guys are looking at will not reflect this, and the consumer web site has not been updated. The dealer spec sheet has been updated, and the dealers have been notified of this "2014 Can-Am Spyder lineup Modification". I do know what I am talking about. nojoke

I think we can agree, there has been some confusion about the trunk release. Why don't we just wait and see?

Exactly. I suggest we wait and see, because I found another inconsistency of information. While that letter from BRP (mentioned here earlier) mentions gas-charged FOX Podium shocks, this BRP webpage says different:

http://can-am.brp.com/spyder/spyder/spyder-rt.html

NEW SACHS† shocks with bigger piston diameter (30 mm) and better damping capacity Travel: 6.85 in

Unless I'm missing something here. In any case, I suggest - Let's wait and see.

Seems I remember a certain saddle was supposed to be standard equipment on a specific model, and ended up being classified a printing error.

Time will tell guys. No need to get your shorts in a knot.

Why they would eliminate a convenience feature on a touring bike is beyond me. But, thats just me.

Absolutely no reason to argue over trivial points like an electronic trunk release on the RT'S and RT-LTD's.

The beta testers are coming and will fill us in on what is actually happening. At the moment, my information is from the printed BRP operators guide. Do dealers know for sure--For most--I am thinking not. My dealer did not even know what colors were available at various levels. No kidding. :yikes:

The item is not a deal killer for most--IMO. Some of us are not as attuned to the happenings at BRP and do not have an inside track to special information--so we try to make do sometimes.

Especially this one here:

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
9/10/2013 - MURRYSVILLE, PA
I HAVE A REAL SAFETY CONCERN INVOLVING THE RT'S. THE BUTTON THAT OPERATES THE PARK/FRONT TRUNK OPENER CAN...AND HAS, RESULTED IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE BUTTON TO OPEN THE FRONT TRUNK FAILED TO UNLATCH THE TRUNK. IT WILL ONLY UNLATCH WHEN THE BIKE IS POWERED ON. YESTERDAY, 9/9/13, MY GRANDSON WANTED ME TO TAKE HIM FOR A RIDE AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I PUT ON HIS HELMET AND PLACED HIM ON THE BACK OF THE BIKE. I NEEDED TO GET SOMETHING OUT OF THE FRONT TRUNK, SO I PUSHED THE BUTTON DOWN TO OPEN IT...IT FAILED TO OPEN AFTER REPEATED TRIES. I GOT OFF THE BIKE AND AS I WAS PUSHING THE BUTTON I WAS LIFTING UP ON THE TRUNK TO SEE IF IT WAS OPENING. WHILE PUSHING THE BUTTON, IT TOGGLED TO THE PARK POSITION AND THE BIKE STARTED GOING BACK AND DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. THANKFULLY I AM QUICK ON MY FEET I WAS ABLE TO RUN WITH AND JUMP ON THE BIKE TO STOP IT. WHY WHY WHY WOULD THEY PUT THE TRUNK OPENER ON THE SAME SWITCH AS THE PARK??? I WAS SHAKING FOR A GOOD 1/2 HOUR OVER THAT, THINKING ABOUT WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WEREN'T ABLE TO JUMP ON THAT BIKE AS FAST AS I DID TO STOP IT. BRP REALLY NEEDS TO RESTRUCTURE THIS PARK/TRUNK OPENER FEATURE.

FYI: This is NOT my posting, I just copied & pasted it here to help stir the pot. Personally, all the guy needed to do was push the button again & there wouldn't be any issue, but ........

no sense in gettin Nasty. Who cares anyway. In almost 5000 miles, I may have remembered twice that I had the electronic opener. Can't we all just get along. Don't forget your helmet. :roflblack:

if the reason they are removing the electric opener is because of the safety issue reported, i would think a button on the dash would do the trick and not be a problem for them to do

Yeah my dealer called me last week told me the same thing about the pushback of delivery date.
I was afraid to push the button on this one and posted it (we do have a button right?) afraid
it may cause anxiety attacks on some.

All I know is my 2009 is already delivered and that I have to turn the key to use the front trunk. So I am good with what is happening currently.

Seems like 2013 / 2014 is a lot of changing in many directions, I am not astonished by the issues that people are having. Many, many mechanical changes create the possibility for problems. I am not blaming BRP, nor the owners, I am just saying, you can only test so much.
