Col. George "Bud" Day passed away yesterday at the age of 88. Col. Day was a three war hero and was the most decorated GI since MacAuthur. He was John McCain's cellmate at the Hanoi Hilton POW prison. Col. Day was an outspoken advocate of veterans rights. He was also an attorney who took on the government in cases concerning veterans rights. He will be missed. We veterans owe him a debt of gratitude for what he did for us. RIP Bud.

Colonel Day was an Air Force fighter pilot, the first man to escape from captors in North Vietnam and make it back across the DMZ . . . and did it shoeless and with an arm broken in three places. He was 2 miles from a Marine firebase when the Viet Cong recaptured him and sent him back north. He was tortured for his escape. When the government took medical care for life away from military retirees who had reached 65, and dumped them off onto Medicare, Bud Day sued and won. He was the reason that Tricare For Life was created by Congress. Bud Day has flown west. Godspeed, Colonel.
