Adding my new ST-L to our insurance policy (getting it tonight). Turns out insurance is 4x as much as it was on my 2009 GS.
What the hell...I'm guessing it's primarily because the word Sport is part of the name of the trike.
The ST-L is not THAT much more replacement value than the '09.

Anyone else have this same experience - big jump to premium cost when upgrading?

Ran into a similar problem with my KTM SMT

In its case the insurance company had never insured one of its exact model/description. So, per them, they had nothing currently insured to categorize it with. Didn't make any since to me. Same CC as all other models used on public roads.

Perhaps Bob can shed additional light on why?

Agreed - they don't know what they are insuring. Engine is same (less HP). To me - less of a sport bike than the '09- but, it says Sport.
Haven't shopped around - YET. But, we may have to. It's pretty ridiculous.

Any suggestions on alternate insurance? We have Allstate for everything.

we had allstate later switched to State Farm who originally insured at a high bike rate and refunded when they found the correct nitch for our creature. Seems in CA they fall under auto which is much cheaper. Try the ones that work the bike circles..good luck..!!

Oh, and they consider it a bike not a car here.

Oh, and they consider it a bike not a car here.

California DMV does not require M1 licence, tho insurers classify it as a motorcycle.

The Can-Am roadster is classified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a three-wheeled motorcycle.

Hey, they're not on the same page. Should we be surprised? :dontknow:

Question:
Are you carrying the same coverage on the ST-L as you did your GS?
That's comparing a new bike's insurance cost; to one that's four year's old...
Ther term, "Sport" doesn't really enter into it; "ST-L" can mean whatever you tell them**; they won't even hear, "sport" unless you use that term... :D

Oh.. Allstate; they'll take the premium, but they're not a Company that knows a thing about bikes...

When in doubt get a quite from a company that insures only toys,
I've been with Foremost over 15 years, Full coverage; Fire, theft, collision, comp, 3k for accessories and towing UN/Under insured for my 2011 Tri and my 2013 Sportster total for both,
525$, and if i add my Rhino in 625$. Un/Under insurance is very important to have, And Most people forget to get it...

:agree:The Companies that specialize in these type of risks, are the ones best-suited to give you the best combination of coverages and costs...

I had the same issue when I went to insure my new ST-L about 2 months ago Allstate couldn't find the correct pricing because it is a new model so they were charging me around twice as much as my wife's 2011 RT however my agent figured it out and re-adjusted the premium after about a day or so in fact I think he contacted BRP directly and now the premium is the same as the Wife's RT

I had 2 bikes on a Progressive policy, 09 Piaggio MP3-500 and my 09 Spyder for around $500 a year (full coverage). traded both for my new ST-S and when I called Progressive to add the bike with the same coverage, the premium was $1400. I received 3 other quotes from other companies ranging from $900 to $1200. A rep. from Progressive told me there is no real world data on this new bike and thats why it's so much more right now. The original person I talked to told me thats what the computer says, "Really". Went with Foremost, they were very reasonable, knowledgeable and professional.

I have been insuring :spyder2:'s through State Farm since 2008. Owned 4, 2008 GS, 2009 RS, 2010 RT-S, 2011 RT-A&C. All have fallen in the mid $50.00 per month to insure. Current for me is $58 and $54. I believe the $58 is for the newer one of the two.

4 times the price of an earlier :ani29: sounds like something is wrong.

Dont forget for the veterans out there that USAA will also insure motorcycles. It sends you to progressive as the writer but there was about a $200 a year difference going through USAA then going straight to progressive. I am at $500 for the year on my 2013 RTS. Hope this helps.

I pay $419.00 a year for my 2013 RT Limited. 100/300/50 with full coverage and $250.00 deductible. It also includes $8,000.00 coverage for accessories. I have Rider Insurance and all they insure are motorcycles.

My 2009 GS was $431/yr (100/300/100 $1000 ded)
My 2013 ST is $648/yr :yikes: (same)

I've always had good luck with State farm. But not this time.

Got a quote from Progressive, $735/yr for both bikes (2009 and 2013) with 250/500/100 $1000 deductable. $10k in accessories. I also added in the total loss coverage on the 2013 (they replace it with a NEW bike instead of giving you the current cash value if it's totaled)

I tried to get Allstate when I got my 2010 RSS and the agent told me they don't insure trikes. As him to contact company directly and let me know in writing the answer. He never called or sent me a response so I went with Geico for around 450 per year. Two months later I tried another Allstate agent and he quoted me $220 per year. Now I back with Allstate with my 2012 RT-S for about the same price and now I have a new agent. Old agent wasn't happy when I moved to another agent plus filed a complaint with the company. My experience seems to be whether an agent really wants to go the extra step or not to get correct information.
