Must be a Canadian thing. Maybe they have to go through the dealership up there. I can't see why they would pay a dealer to do a one minute job.

Put the new caps on. They do seem to have a tighter fit. A little more effort is needed to get them to "click". The new cap is larger and beefier. I'll post pics.

Caps turn clockwise to close in the USA. In Canada they turn counter-clockwise.

Was your recall, that requires a visit to the dealer, for the fuel cap or for the rerouting of the vent hose coming from the evaporator canister?

ARtraveler

It appears the recalls to bring the :spyder2: into the shop are for the vent hose fix.

Bob, I had to find a knife to open the boxes, then find the keys to the Spyders and walk down the steps to the garage. Insert key, raise seat, remove old cap, pick old cap up after dropping it, install new cap and close seat. That was on the wifes Spyder. Operation went smoother on my Spyder, I didn't drop the cap. :roflblack: I think the one minute for the dealer to do it is conservative. You'd probably have to leave it for three days for them to fit it in the schedule. :banghead:

I received the new cap today also. My installation was easier as I already had the seat up with the battery tender on.
It will definately get the road test this weekend, sunny with temps in the mid 70"s.

Yup, same here. Lot more effort to get it to click and a lot beefier. I now wonder if the hot weather gas smell will go away now. Warm here this weekend as well. I shall see.

New fuel caps arrived today by post from BRP.

Did they send it via first class or priority mail? I've got standard mail forwarding while in FL for the winter. Hopefully the USPS with forward.

Questions
01-10-2013, 12:18 AM
I may have missed some earlier posts but why are the caps being changed? To the best of my knowledge we have never been informed about any recalls for anything here in New Zealand. Maybe we get 'special' Spyders that are always perfect?

Came home from work today and saw the package on the table, from the writing on the package label it reads "Important Safety Recall Notice", Shipped from Lachine QC, Canada to my residence in South Carolina. Will also take a ride with the warm weather this weekend and see if the Gas smell goes away.

If BRP felt you should stop riding, they would have told you so...and handled the recall differently. nojoke

bruiser

We didn't stop ryding either. I agree with Scotty. If you look at the number of Spyders on the road and the number that have experienced thermal events, you'll find it's a small %. And to my knowledge it's never been proven that the gas cap or vent hose were the cause. In fact the recall notice enclosed with the new cap states it's being replaced due to venting fuel vapors causing air pollution. Not for causing thermal events.

Just got my new gas cap today for my 2011 RS-S. I looked up the price $28.99. A gas cap for my Jeep is 10.99 and gas cap for my Mustang is $12.99. Why is it 2 to 3 times more in price for a common part?

I got the letter about the vapor vent hose problem earlier this week. Just remembered to check the mail today, new gas cap was in the box. Put it on and canned the old one.
I have not had any gas smells with the old cap, :f_spider:is garaged and haven't noticed any fumes. My old cap must have been one of those that wasn't bad. New one is bigger and takes a tad more to get a click when closing.

I had my OEM seat redone by a professional who does motorcycle seats recently, added gel pad and we cut the corner of the pan and hinged it to allow me to refuel without lifting the seat. New larger cap fit without a problem. I am due for my 3600 mile oil change, will get the new larger filters when I visit the dealer for that. He recommended I go to 3000 miles before changing to the newer filters. no real need to change oil early just to get the new filter.

I am still evaluating the redo of the seat, and haven't decided what I will do with the BRP comfort seat the redo replaced. Will try to get pictures that show details of the fuel door and custom stiching to share. Tomorrow looks like a good day to take a ride.

So, took a ride to the coast today. 250 miles round trip. Still had slight fuel smell but nowhere near as bad as before. It's probably from the vent line. Got home and parked them in the garage with 1/2 tank of fuel, no fuel smell. Before, had to leave them outside to cool down and disipate fuel vapors before putting them in the garage.

We got the new gas cap and recall letter in the mail today. Unfortunately, I doubt the gas cap is the cause of the strong gasoline smell, which we got from our Spyder, both during and after our last ryde on our 2012 RT-S. After we got home, and the Spyder had been sitting for a few minutes, the husband did some investigating. He found liquid gasoline dripping from the outlet of a tube underneath the Spyder. After doing some research on this forum, we contacted the dealer, and took the Spyder in for repairs. Hopefully, they will be able to fix the problem! I am so grateful for this forum, where Paul and I can learn from fellow Spyder owners, instead of having to figure everything out myself!

Enjoy the Ryde!

It's not a bad idea to put a little lubricant (the right kind) on your O-Ring once a year or so. I use a light, clear silicone/synthetic grease on mine. Keeps the O-Ring flexible, keeps it from drying out and cracking. And helps it to seal better and releases better too.

Be careful what you use though. I'd say some lubricants might attack the O-Ring compound.

Thought I read somewhere not to use silicone anywhere that may end up getting inhaled into a cylinder and burnt. Something about silicone will kill the catalytic converter in a heartbeat.

Was your recall, that requires a visit to the dealer, for the fuel cap or for the rerouting of the vent hose coming from the evaporator canister?
I got my on the mail to and my spyder was at the dealer and they work on the vent hose e evaporator canister. I am very happy :clap:

I was referring to a light coat on the gas cap gasket {o ring}

Using silican sealers ie: RTV in an engine compartment can cause fumes from the RTV to be taken in through the air filter. It's not the CAT but the sensors that can be damaged. However, there are sensor safe silicans out now. But you must read the label. Ron is correct, a small amount of the correct lube is ok. Vasoline is my choice.

Ron or Others - I am still waiting for a replacement Fuel Cap from BRP Europe

When it comes I want to do what Ron suggested Ref - put a little lubricant (the right kind) on the O-Ring seal

I have 2 choices of Lubricants to use - Which should I use or can I use either ?

1 - Silicone Seal Ring Lubricant

2 - Vaseline(*) which is a brand of petroleum jelly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_jelly) based products owned by Anglo-Dutch company Unilever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever).

(*) Not sure if this is the same substance as described by Bruiser as Vasoline in his post

Thanks

There isn't any way for prudent application of silicone to the gas cap O-Ring that is going to cause any issues with the engine. I don't recommend squeezing a glob of it into your fuel tank, now that might cause some interesting results.

I don't have a Cat on my Spyder so that issue is a non-starter for me.

Either of these suggested lubricants will work fine.

I received mine today, but found the instructions above about opening the box quite confusing. So instead I cut the box in half with a band saw to get it open. Unfortunately this also cut the new cap in half. I was concerned that using glue to put the two halves of the cap back together might do damage to the catalytic converter so I used heavy fishing line to sew it together and found some bamboo to put inside the threaded section to add strength. Unfortunately when I tried to screw the cap onto the bike the cap was a hair bigger than the opening. Sooo, I got some plaster of paris and made a mold of the new cap then converted my gas grill into a foundry which enabled me to melt some iron ore and cast an iron version of the repaired platic gas cap. I used a hand file to sharpen the threads on the iron cap then used the winch motor off my truck in combination with a vise grip to essentially use the iron cap as a giant drill bit to open up the opening on the gas tank. Now the repaired plastic cap fits on the bike but Im not sure I've solved the sloshing issue.

Yes, I did. Note that I think BRP have focused first on contacting customers in warmer climates at this time of year.
