Will a 2010 trl hook right up to 2012 RTS or is there rewiring involved. What is the difference between the 2010 and 2012 trl. Found a great deal in Ft Meyer, FL on a 2010 trl:confused:

The 2010 connector has 7 wires, 2011 and 12 has 4 wires but they are the same round plug. 2013 has a 4 wire square plug and requires an adapter from BRP or you can buy one off the shelf and do it yourself as I am doing this weekend :-).

If you already have the trailer hitch and connector, it will work fine. The separate turn signals will not be functional, but the brake lights will function as turn signals, too. If you have to buy a new hitch and trailer module, the connectors are different. The earlier hitch is no longer available, unless your dealer has one on the shelf. In that case you will have to install a different connector on the trailer (easiest solution), or purchase the adapter harness BRP offers to make the early trailers work with the new module. That adapter will not connect to your 2010 trailer wiring, so it will have to have the connectors snipped off and be wired directly. The intermediate connector inside the tongue is different from 2010 to 2011/2012. If I know exactly what combination you have, I can steer you toward a solution. Feel free to PM me for assistance.

If you have the wire harness already installed on the RT I can make the wiring work with any trailer.

Doc

I'm going to take you up on that Doc, I have the hitch installed but the plug on the trailer dose not match. Will see you tomorrow the dealer here in ft Meyers did a temporary wiring job to get home

The trailer hitch and plug installed by the dealer was the 2013 model. So I ordered the 4 wire square plug, cut off the round plug on the trailer, and spliced on the 4 pin square plug. I replaced the 4 orange turn signal bulbs with red LED's. They now work as additional brake lights and turn signals.

Not really sure why BRP made the changes, but the 2010 trailer was the way to go. The more functioning lights, the better to be seen.I am adapting mine to the Goldwings wiring harness this coming week. Scotty, I will be consulting you on wiring do's and dont's.

If my memory hasn't totally failed, I believe the 2010 trailer had backup lights but the 2011/2012 did not and that is the difference in the wiring.

It had them, but the trailer modules had no backup light output, so they were not functional. The 2010 trailer also had separate turn signals.
