View Full Version : Demographic of the typical Spyderlovers member

Based on the article Doc posted about BRP going public, and the statement that most BRP customers were high wage earners with a sizable discretionary income, I thought I would pose this question. I was once a 3. :D :roflblack:

"What is the demographic of the typical Spyder owner here on Spyderlovers?"

1. Young just starting out, lots of startup debt.
2. Middle aged, decent job, time for toys.
3. Reaching retirement, loaded with lots of pocket change.
4. Retired, comfortable , but not much discretionary income.
5. Old and barely scrapin' by.

...except I am not that young. I consider young to be mid 20's to lower 30's. However I do not have the extra income at all. Shoot, I am saving up for a $200 course if that means anything. I mean I am not broke but purchasing the spyder put a dent in my monthly finances for sure. But every once in a while you have to do something just because you want to and not because you need to. For me the spYder was my "just because I want too" moment. Which I rarely have those moments. So far it has been a great decision. Trying to live more by the motto of "you don't live to work, but work to live" :D

I was told once that you have to get older, but you don't have to grow up.. I am a "toys-R-us Kid that should be a 4, but still in the 3 category. My last bike was a BMW that was totaled in 1984 (Thank You Pickup truck). I have had the Spyder for about 3 months now and loving it and loving life...;);)

I'm a three except for the loads of pocket change. Retiring 1 January after 44+ years of working.

I'm a hybrid... fortunate combo 4 and 3; recently retired (4 months) with lots of pocket change.

I'm in the demographic somewhere but not telling where I stand. You will note a comparison between :spyder2: riders and Gold Wing owners as far as age, etc. I am betting similar demographics for GW/:ani29: owners.

You do have to have some extra cash in order to spend 25K to 32K for a toy like the :spyder2:. The :ani29: is not like a usual 10K to 15K motorcycle. The market is pretty tough now. They are still trying to sell my pristine 2010 Vulcan 900 with only 6K miles on it for 7K. They had three potential buyers--but they did not even qualify for a 7K loan.

I'm fortunate enough, I could buy one outright. Lingering medical expenses have held me back. That may change next year. I sold my Honda a few years ago. I told my wife how much I miss riding. I have test ridden a Spyder several times. I love it. We'll see.

We're a 2 and living large. Working hard and enjoying our :spyder2:. Got a little place off the Blueridge Parkway finally ready to go now looking for some good riding weather. Have met a couple of Spyder riders up there one day a couple of months ago riding their grandkids around. Now we have ours. Hope to see you guys on the road soon.

Sort of a 2, except the job is only fair. The only reason I was able to get the Spyder is that I had money from the sale of my old house. It's all I can do to afford the maintenance, lol!

I am very fortunate.
I'm 60 and have been retired for 5 or 6 years.
Plus
So, I hope no one considers this a brag, it isn't or at least it isn't meant to be.

"I've decided that saving for the Nursing Home's benefit isn't why I worked my tush off before I retired. " Well said!! I am 60 and also retired 5 years ago. I would consider myself a 4, I guess. But I did finance my Spyder. :D I actually work part time to pay for my Spyder and the fuel. I am very blessed.

I'm definitely a 3 but without the pocket change. I'm retiring in January, have spent a lot of my pocket change on changing my GS in to a ST without knowing the ST was coming. About four years ago, when I was 65 I actually listened to the words of an old Jimmy Buffett song that said that I would rather die while I am living than live while I'm dead. So I said to myself, "Girl, you better start moving"and two weeks later bought my first motorcycle. Shortly afterwards I suffered a really serious thyroid problem. During recovery, I bought myself a beautiful RED 2009 GS Spyder and my feet haven't touched the ground since. It was used, but perfect. Am I rich, absolutely not, but am I happy, that's an understatement. With the emotional support of my kids and my partner, and my beautiful RED Spyder, Life is wonderful!

47 (I'd call that middle aged), Married, no kids, and enough income and savings that the expense was well considered, as all of our significant expenses are, but not painful in any way.
