Route66

Looking for some suggestions from those of you that have traveled Route 66. A small group of us are taking Route 66 from Amarillo, TX to the west coast, up the coast along PCH to San Francisco, then east to Las Vegas, down to the Grand Canyon and back to Amarillo. What are some the best places to stop and eat along the way, sights to see, things to do. I read some stuff about Route 66, but I want to hear from those of you that have traveled this route recently (last 2 yrs or so).

You probably know of this place already but in Adrian, TX is the midpoint for Rte 66 with the appropriate Midpoint Cafe. The owner is a very nice guy. Be sure to check the net for places to stop on the Mother Road, there are too many. When are you planning to do this?

Current plans are to head out from Amarillo on 10/14/12 -and return on 10/28/12.

IrishtotheMax(God rest his soul) and I did this trip in 2010. We actually started in Cuba. We did the PCH as well. What a beautiful drive. I would suggest you get a couple of books. I would also suggest you do the final leg to the Santa Monica pier on a Saturday or Sunday when the LA traffic is not so bad. We were lucky as we had Desert Spyder escort us from Barstow to the pier. As far as restaurants, we did really make it a point to eat in specific places. We ate lunch in local grocery stores several times and generally checked at the motel we stayed in to get recommendations for Dinner. The guide books will give you lots of suggestions for places to eat as well.

Traveling on Route 66 is GREAT fun...but it take longer than you think...if you plan to stop along the way...let me go look at my pics and I'll be back with some links

Tucumcari is a great place...but too close for this trip....the Safari Motel is the best...we stay there every time we head that way ...owners Richard and Carol are the best...wonderful beds, towels and hospitality

there are so many places to stp and see...Winslow, Az...you gotta stop for a photo on the corner...I could write a book...just check out the links...lots of info

Heading west from Flagstaff your GPS may tell you that Rt. 66 goes through the Navajo Army Depot but believe me it doesn't! :roflblack:

I just got back 3 months ago. I was gone 30 days from Toronto Canada. Rode as much as 66 as I could and stopped in lots of places.

Stop at the blue moon cafe in Sedona Az. Tim is the owner, and a great guy except he rides a Harley...lol

I rode the RT66 Rally twice the last time being last June.Highlights from Amarillo are The Sante Fe Trail into Sante Fe then stop in Madrid where Wild Hogs was filmed .You can eat in the Cafe which was in the movie.Then ride up Sandia Crest and overlook Alberquerque.
Ride through The Petrified Forest NP in Arizona then a great ride is Rt66 from Seligman to Kingman.Carry on over The Sitgreaves Pass great ride into Oatman.Cool Western town with burros wandering about.Into LA and get your picture taken at Santa Monica Pier where it ends under the sign.
From there you are on The PCH.Wonderful ride all the way upto Monterey.You can continue on great riding all the way upto San Francisc cross The Golden Gate Bridge, visit Napa Valley and head East RT50 to Lake Tahoe and onto Las Vegas.Go via Utah Zion NP and Bryce Canyon spectacular then The Grand Canyon.

Are you planning on travelling on the actual Rte 66 or the figurative 66. If you take the actual 66 I would add more time to your schedule.
