Will all 2013 spyders now require premium fuel? The GS and RS bikes ran regular with the RT being required to use premium. Now, all spyders have the same engine. Am I correct in thinking this is the situation?

The Rt required Premium fuel because it has a higher compression engine then the RS to get the extra torque. Now that all models are using the same engine I would guess Premium would be required for All.

What is the RT engine higher compression?

Isn't it about 12.2:1?
I think that the older GS/RS mills were maybe 10.8:1...

I solved the problem on what octane to use, By using what i've always used in all my bikes, trikes,
''Premium'',
Same with all my ATV, Side bys, and especially my Chainsaw's.

No ethanol.. regardless of octane works best.
I was under the impression that the ratio was 13:1 for all... only the mapping was different between RS and RT ( 2012 and prior ) I think... of course I have senior moments...LOL

:dontknow:It would seem from this, the 2012s & prior use the same exact engine, just with calibration, fuel injection & throttle control differences:lecturef_smilie: accounting for the need of the RTs to require the higher grade fuel:banghead: It would seem logical Since the 13s are ALL using the RT spec engines & settings that Premium fuel would also be required:sour:

I would like to see the curve of the RS, I doubt many RS owners run at 8500 rpm where peak horsepower is.

I think you're right about that. I am a little rev happy and shift at 9,000 rpm once and awhile, but I think that many never see 8,500 rpm. I seem to remember once seeing a torque and horsepower chart for the RS engine. I can't find it now.

Good luck finding fuel with no ethanol. :doorag:

Peak HP is reduced but the torque is generally higher over a wider rpm range. That equals better drivability characteristics for touring.

Horsepower makes for Bragging rites,
Torque makes for pulling power, and thats at 6250 RPM.

The peak power in most vehicles is at an rpm that most people don't reach often. Take a look at your truck, car etc.

I would love if all vehicles came with a dyno chart on the window sticker instead of some peak HP and torque figures... Tells a more useful story.

If all the 2013's are 12.2:1 then they all require minimum 91. If they used direct injection then they might be able to use 89 without any noticeable loss of power, performance or mileage.

The torque curve on a RS is pretty flat... and starts fading around 8k. The RT torque climbs until about 60ftlbs at 5500 and then falls off. (remember this is at the ground whereas BRP's figures are at the shaft.)

here's a mildly modified and tuned RS http://tunedbypsi.com/dyno-record.php?Can-Am-Spyder-323

The model 991 in the RT is a great engine, very versatile. I don't blame them for putting it in all 2013's. I can't say I like throttle by wire, but I'm sure I'd get used to it just like anyone else. One less cable to adjust, lube, stretch, corrode, stick, kink, break...

Bob,
Why don't you throw the Tri-G's numbers down here; that torque might just scare some folks into believing!

Only 100 ft- lb, But at 3250 rpm.

But with my addition of True Duals [cat less], and a stage 1 it definitely feels like its pushing a lot more .
The stock red line is 55 hundred now it's 63 hundred, And getting 39/40 mpg on the road.
I drive it like a Diesel, No matter what gear I'm in around town [except 6Th] i keep it at 25 hundred rpm.

And THAT folks; is what torque is all about!:bowdown::bowdown:

I also think that no RS ryder will be unhappy with the "new" engine - they told me here that it would need around 10% less fuel used in an RS .. so lets see how much the ST needs then ..

:yes:I found it right here in Florida at the Stuart entrance/exit I95.They actually have a sign up stating they have Ethanol free fuel. Its the Marathon.I filled up with it Saturday.
First time I have ever seen it.
