I had a big ride planned today with my MC. I start the engine and Bam!!! Big orange check engine light AGAIN (took it into the shop for this 1 1/2 weeks ago) and this time the bike is making lots of bad noise, clanging and shaking. I turned it off immediately, pulled the key and walked away for about a minute. Tried to start it again and the same thing but this time I put it into reverse and it was ever worse, pulled out of the garage just a few feet and put it into first and barely got it back into the garage.
I will call the dealership tomorrow. Will have to have it towed in..............WTH???? The only other problem I have had with it was bad guages and those were replaced a good while ago.
I have my oil changed on time.............
I am really pi$$ed off now.........:banghead: Afraid this is going to be bad!

Any ideas?

My guess is its the throttle body.

Without the failure codes, it is hard to say what is going on. Could be a bad plug wire, could be a bad throttle body, could be an ECM problem, or could be something esle. The check engine light is just the end result. Your dealer should be able to sort it out...if he will pick it up or you can get it to him. If you have the extended warranty, the road service should help. Sorry about the ride having to be cancelled.

Did it throw any codes?

How to check for codes.

Turn key on, then.

Lay your left thumb across both the "Mode" and "Set" Buttons - while holding them down
push your turn signal button in.

The main screen should bring up codes.

Write them down, then hit "Mode" one last time to get back to the home screen.

Post codes and we can check them for you.

Hate to hear you're having an issue.

Jerbear, I did what you said and this is what came up P1614

Lamonster, it does sound like the video you posted.

What additionally ticks me off is just last Friday week ago, the engine light came on...I called the dealership and they said it was okay to ride it in and they would look at it immediately. According to their computer hook up, it needed two bud updates, TCM and ECM? I have only ridden it about 35 miles or so after the dealership so this happened with it just sitting in the garage.........:banghead:

What does that code mean??

(A million thanks to ya'll for this insight and help)

Some seem to fail anyway, possibly from damage prior to the update. Some were not replaced at the time of the update, despite being called for in the service bulletin if codes have appeared. In either case, your throttle body needs to be replaced.

Happened to me 2 wks ago. Same code, same symptoms. Throttle body failure. Did you say 2011? If so shd be covered under warranty. Worst part was waiting 5 days for part. Good news runs better than ever. Make sure you get 3rd and latest upgrade for throttle body if you haven't already when they replace it. Good luck.

Had the same problem. ECM went out and repalced....did not fix the problem. Repalced the throttle body...fixed.

P1614... :gaah: That would be the throttle body's swan song...
Sorry...
I've been having a running hatchet-fight with my bike: P1120 & P2620 keep shutting things down at the most interesting moments possible!
Getting it back to the dealer next Month... but writing everything down in the interim!

To answer one question, yes 2011 RTS SE5

Called the dealership first thing Monday morning. Man answering says he will call me right back. I called them back 5 hours later....the slow burn is turning into a low boil. If I want them to pick up the bike it will be Friday before they can get someone to me as they are "a man down on Tuesday and Thursday". Wondering what the heck that has to do with Monday? They are always a man down on Tuesday and Thursday.

Might also use this time to put on the new oil panel and count my miles and see if it's oil change time.

arrrrrgggggggggg

Called my dealer today to make sure they were picking up my bike tomorrow. We chatted, I inquired about a loner so I could go on the great ride this weekend. Just for the hell of it, I put the key in and the bike had no "check engine" lights, started it up and there was no clanging noise, idle was perfect!!! WTH?
I'm taking it in tomorrow after the gun range and they will hook it back up to see what the heck is going on.

My question is after the bike was just sitting in my garage this week, how did it miraculously stop throwing the engine light and stop banging???

The throttle positioner can do that. The problem will become more frequent, until it fails altogether. It will need a throttle body, but you may be able to buy some time. If you do ride it while waiting for parts, I hope you have road service, just in case.

I know this will sound stupid, but a throttle body is an actual part, yes?

Yes, think of it as the carburetor. It serves the same basic function. The throttle positioner is part of the throttle body assembly, and is not available separately.

Throttle body fuel injected engines use a throttle position sensor (TPS) to send a signal back to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM then knows what amount of fuel to send to the mixer for that position. As Scotty said, this is a part of the throttle body so the whole assembly needs to be replaced. Tunnel port injected engines... Never mind, I don't want to confuse you.

Rode my bike to the dealership today. Of course it was acting perfectly. They hooked it up......cleared the code, updated the software. They took it for a short test drive and handed it back to me.

I am riding around 250 miles tomorrow with friends. Yes I do have roadside assistance. This sucks not knowing if it is "fixed" or just patched. They could not duplicate the clanging/banging/check engine.

OYE! Say a little prayer.

Sorry to say but... "It will happen again". According to A dealer in MO. 1 code is all it takes BRP says to change the throttle body out. Have your dealer to check his memo that he never read. I lost most of my summer riding be couse my dealer would "reset" with buds and shove it out the door. week later I would have to bring it back in...again, and again. I went to another dealer in MO. 400 miles away and they repaired it right the first time by changing the throttle body.

:agree: The service bulletin specifies changing out the throttle body if any of four throttle body related codes appear.

As previously stated, when mine was replaced 2 wks ago, I had the same fears because I had heard they cud go out again. The svc tech said the latest and third update has finally taken care of it. Your dealer should know which update they did, and please keep us posted! Very interested in whether the problem is now solved.....

What service bulletin?

I really need to know as I just signed up for a 4 day ride in November, from Dallas to Memphis and back. In my joy of the moment I was suddenly reminded of the codes my bike has been throwing, and the joy is fading into fear. How do I get my dealer (who is a complete and total jerk) to change out the throttle body? Suggestions most welcome!

I emailed with Lamont and he isn't sure what you are referring to. Could someone tell me how to locate these "service bulletins" you mentioned?

If I asked my dealer about them point blank, he "wouldn't know what I was talking about".

The original information was given in Warranty Campaign 2011-0008 (Service Bulletin 2011-7). That covered the "Throttle Body Validation & ECM Update". That was for the first throttle body update. I do not know if there was a later service bulletin issued with the latest update, perhaps not. In that case WC 2011-0008 would apply, using the latest ECM update. PM me your email address and I can send you a copy of that bulletin. Sorry that your dealer is a dud.

As Scotty and some other mentioned, it was a matter of "when" not "if" the Throttle Body issue would pop up again.........it did, today!!!!!!! Thanks to Scotty for sending me a "Bulletin" regarding this very matter. According to the bulletin, the dealership/service department did NOT read, if any one of 4 codes are thrown, the entire throttle body et all needs to be replaced. The dealership that just cleared the codes and did the updates were told by me of the P1614. Did they say they needed to replace this stuff, no. Did they just send me on my way? Yes. I called them yesterday about this bulletin and they said they would call me back. Did they? No. I called in again today and was told to bring it in. I call my sister to follow me to the dealership. I gear up, start the bike and the banging shaking metal sound started AGAIN!!! I wasted her valuable time and woke up my entire neighborhood with a raunchy, off color rant at the top of my lungs!!! Third time in under two weeks!!!! :banghead:

Again, they can't pick up my bike (2011 RTS SE5) until Friday. I asked that they order the parts now (they probably didn't) so that I wouldn't lose even more time due to their inability to give a damn. :cus: and :cus: after I :cus:!!!! The fact that this bulletin came out in 2011 makes it even worse.

I will be looking for another dealership after this.....even if it is out of the way.

Thank you all for your assistance. Hopefully this will fix the problem.......crossing fingers.

Hey Flight...seriously consider North Texas Yamaha. They have one of the better service techs in the metroplex. And even the counter jockeys actually know what you're talking about when you ask them questions. I'm more than willing to drive the 45 min out of my way for competent service. Can't be that much further for you, might even be shorter.

Dib, that is exactly the dealership I intend to use. I just need a back way to get there. I don't want any part of I35...190 is bad enough.

The MC group I ride with usually takes off most every weekend from Hwy 78 and 544 which should be near you in Wylie. You should join us sometime!

My (not for much longer) dealership just picked up my Spyder. THANKFULLY, this time when I started it up it was doing the clanging/banging/shaking thing in front of one of their techs!

As most know I have been trying to get this Throttle Body issue dealt with for several weeks. I had to push them to replace it, after quoting the service bulletin to them. The service manager AKA Owner is the one who offered to pick it up. I was just informed that I get to pay $45 for that luxury.

If I can switch to another dealership after this, one this is much farther away, I will.

The people who work there are nice, the owner is a jerk!

Pray that they don't mess this up.....:banghead:

Do you have BEST + Warranty?

Jerbear, no I don't have that warranty. Next month will be 1 year of owning it.

How does that warranty work? After paying for the warranty, do I pay the dealership for work done then get reimbursed by the warranty agent?

Believe me, I have really been thinking about this lately! As always, your input is much appreciated!

Both of these sponsors offer the BEST and BEST Plus. I've heard Berts is very helpful and will explain the differences between the two plans. And, also hear they offer it a fair price. Can be purchased for 1, 2, or 3 additional years. FWIW I have the 3 additional years and BEST plus.

Here's a PDF link to the BEST pamphlet. Examine it carefully or you'll miss important bits and pieces of information.

The BEST warranties work just like the BRP original warranty. The dealer just enters it into the system. You would pay a $50 deductable, which some dealers will waive. Multiple deductibles may apply for several simultaneuos, unrelated claims.

I forgot to tell ya'll that I did get a new throttle body on my bike and I did take the 4 states in 4 days ride. We rode through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas then stopped in Memphis partied and returned home. All back roads except when going into Memphis proper. While in Searcy, Arkansas.....guess who found me and my group at a little Mexican food restaurant? Faran of the Fantastic Five Can Am Ambassadors......what a sweet girl!

My first overnight road trip..........FANTASTIC!!!

This past weekend here in Dallas was the Progressive International Motorcycle Show and I got to meet Lamont and see Faran again. That was the cherry on the ice cream!
