I have joined the Patriot Guard. They use the large 3x5 ft. flags fro their ceremonies. Does anyone out there participate in the PG and what flag mounts do you use to hold the large 3x5 ft. flags securely at low speeds?

Thanks

When I have ridden with the Patriot Guard I just fly my small flags on my ISCI Flag Mount. I don't think the PGR cares what size flag you fly just that you show up.

I ride with the PGR up here in Maine, I hook them to the trailer hitch. The American Leagon web site under Leagon Riders has a flag mount for 1 or 3 flags that will mount to a trailer hitch.

I've been a member of the American Legion Riders since it's inception and I also fly 3 flags from the trailer hitch mount...You can find all your accessory needs here at the American Legion Riders website for the store...

Does this device fit on the Spyder? If not, can you provide the URL for the device that does? Very interested for my RT.

I made a pole to fit my hitch. Used a six foot threaded bar, nuts, washers, clips, and a cheep flag pole to put together. I have ridden at speeds up to 75 MPH with no problem to the pole. The flag will tear at the ends, but it was a cheep flag too. 5369653697536985369953700

I had a set made for my Wing (See below). They should be able to hook to about any ball hitch (less the ball) as I've used them on truck's reese hitch. I pick up my hitchless spyder tomorrow. It wont' be hitchless for long. The price isn't for the faint of heart though. I have run these on my Wing at 80+ (with police escort) and never had a problem or ever worry about them.

They are cast and come about in three sections via quick pins.

I bought them in '10 so I'm not sure if they are still making flag poles and mounts.

Ask for Kevin (mmmachine@comwares.net) and let him know your with the PGR.

Note: I buy all my US and military flags from Eagle Mountain flags in Texas (http://www.eaglemountainflag.com/) as they are made in the USA.

ISCI has a flag holder for RT's...they are a SL sponsor. (There is a recent thread about it under the RT section on here that talks about it).

Our RS has a flag holder that Ed made and mounted on the right side of the Spyder near the passenger floorboard. He has it attached to the passenger handgrips via velcro tape.

Yes...It fits on the Spyder via the trailer hitch...It's the same link I provided above...It's very sturdy and I carry 3 flags all the time with no problem up to speeds of 80 mph...Just make sure the flags you get are designed to withstand the winds at high speed...No prob with the standard American Flag or the POW flaf...Gotta watch your stiching.

I made mine with a upright from Rivco. If others are interested, I can try to post here or send a PM.
I think it is better to buy a good Flag, then treat the trailing edge with FRY EDGE. It is a seam sealer for sewing. I got mine at Wal Mart. It slighly changed the MIA flag, but none of the others. Mine has seen several thousand miles of flying Oldmanzues

I guess I'm just not seeing it. This link goes to a flag holder that does not use the trailer hitch.

How does it mount on the Spyder trailer hitch?

Thats a nice (and pricey) unit. But what poles do you use?

I use modified standard flag folks...shortened but I believe they also have some on the site...Not quite sure...Many folks go to Menard's or other hardware store and get PVC pipe and use eye hooks with them...works just as well

So is everyone saying there is no flag mount for a Spyder without the use of a trailer hitch to fly 3 X 5's?

This is the setup used by a rider here in Iowa. The poles extend out and all parts are stored on the bike and connect to the BRP trailer hitch. He told me he got them from someplace in Florida. If I can get in touch with him I'll get more info.

Having a hard time seeing how they are connected. They appear to be going through the rear grip and then attached somewhere by the rear foot peg. I wish they had a better collapsible pole for the honor line. Those 6 ft > 18 in poles with the O rings inside are worthless after a few uses.

That 2nd link to the American Legion Hitch mount was what I needed to see. We've been riding with the PGR just this year. I am using the ISCI tall dual flag holders for the RT and fly 4 flags on them at any given time. The American, PGR, POW MIA and MOGANG or SPYDERFEST depending on the event. I might have to put that parade flag holder on my Christmas wish list this year.

Congrats and welcome all new and old PGR members!

I would like to see more examples personally. The Am Leg flag holder does not look like it can be applied to the BRP hitch bracket, unless it were upside down. I wish the other picture was a little more clearer. It looks like the BRP hitch bracket but no ball.

My results for a 3x5...

Currently, I have the collapsible flag pole (http://patriot-guard-riders.hostedbywebstore.com/Collapsible-Flag-Pole/dp/B004SC39F4?class=quickView&field_availability=-1&field_browse=2616659011&field_product_site_launch_date_utc=-1y&id=Collapsible+Flag+Pole&ie=UTF8&refinementHistory=brandtextbin%2Csubjectbin%2Ccolo r_map%2Cprice%2Csize_name%2Cclothing_size-bin%2Ccolor_name&searchNodeID=2616659011&searchPage=1&searchRank=salesrank&searchSize=12) available from PGR but not comfortable with it for any real speed. At a Lamonster's BBQ I spoke with a fellow PGR person and he suggested Schedule 18 PVC with wooden dowel (oak or ash) down the center.

A picture is worth a 1000 words. I used SST bow rail from a local marine supply shop.

The whole thing is Stainless Steel except the bolt going through the Spyder hitch. I think the mount is 3/4 bow rail and the flag pole is 1/2 bow rail. I put some white tape around the flag pole to center the pole more and cut down on the sloppyness.

I may have solved my flag holder. I just bought a Pakit Rak and the hitch adapter looks as though it may work great.

Two birds with one stone!

That looks cool but what looks cooler is what you did with the trailer cable. Great idea!

I'm a PGR and have a homemade two flag mount on my RT trailer hitch. Only I don't use 3x5 ft.
flags, I use the smaller 2x3 ft flags mounted on 1" EMT. It's quite stable, even at higher speeds.

I’ve been using a Rivco pole mount. It’s on a 1/4 x 2 x 4 plate that has a slight offset bolted with the hitch ball stud. The pole mount is not 90 degrees so old glory must go down the freeway at an angle. I use a 1 in metal conduit as the pole and use tag lines from an eye bolt on top to the rear grips as a back up in case the pole comes out on rough roughs with the swing arm action. I do have the pole secured with a keeper pin but bolts and welds have been known to fail before. Where are you buying your flag. A flag made strong enough for high winds is a must. I’m on my 5th flag already from a company down the freeway that sells them to local schools, etc. I live in an area with high wind activity and when you’re traveling into the wind at 60 plus mph they don’t last long. I also have a flag that’s like a net which has been my best. I need to get it sewn up because it’s seen some action a bit. It’s legal to wash and repair the flags btw. I’m a RC in SouCal which is one of the busiest in the country.
