View Full Version : 2013 Spyders to get bigger engines, more horsepower

ViperWolf

Stopped by Can Am dealer in Nashville today. Sales guy on the floor stated sales meeting revealed bigger engines definitely coming on new 2013 models, and to expect other changes as well but that the BRP was being very "tight lipped" about the "other changes.". Corporate announcements on new models this Sunday, and local dealers should have details on Monday morning.

Anyone else got any scoop? I'm really hoping for the rumored ST/ST-S to materialize this model year.

I think the RT could make good use of a larger engine as long as gas mileage didn't suffer too much. The RS however has more than enough power to satisfy anyone except the most performance orientated enthusiasts (like Doc).

I Don,t know about the Bigger engine BUT it might be on the STS and you will Pay for it.nojoke
Whenever BRP upped the jet ski engine size people jumped all over them!!:yikes:

I already made space for something in my Garage and the GS will slide right by it No problem!!!

I am guessing if a bigger engine is offered on the RT that gas mileage will improve--less lugging, etc.

EX: GW with their 1800 cc and comparable wt. get 40 mpg generally.

If all they did was make the Tupper wear on the RT removable without taking off the mirrors, it would be huge. Gas mileage will also improve when we get real gas and not the junk we buy now.

Oh yeah! Almost forgot. A fix for the roasting right hoof would be beyond golden.

Sales manager at my dealer told some of us that "There WILL be a bigger engine in the future." However, he didn't say it would be in 2013 and most of us got the feeling he was talking about a couple of years down the road.

Who knows...

I heard it is a definite, probably an inline 3 cyl 1500 cc engine. For those worrying about gas mileage, more tourque, lower revs means same or better gas mileage I would think. I wisk they would shaft drive the new model!!

Regardless of what they do, will wait a year or 2 until they kill all the bugs. Then

But the SST frame isn't designed to handle anything bigger or bulkier than the current V-Twin... :gaah:

I think the engine is going to stay the same but it is going to be a street cruiser with forward controls. That style would make it easier for someone with knee issues to ride. My father has had both knees replaced and I hope I am right. We have ridden ski-doo snowmobiles for years and I cant wait for him to be able to ryde with me.

They have been using a 3cyl 1500cc liquid cooled motor in the seadoos since 2003. NA versions are 155hp and supercharged versions range from 185-260hp stock.....
It's a pretty compact little motor to. Would seem pretty easy to adapt in the spyder.
Heck, they already share the same coolant bottle.....

On another note:
Anyone notice that on their display cluster there is a picture of a ski, but not lit up? Looks like the cluster has provisions for trim like we see on the jetski clusters.....

Just how fast are you going in 5th that you need a 6th?

5th gear on mine easily takes me to 100+ MPH with headroom on the RPM's yet.

Just wondering... That's all.

Bigger engine, Hybrid(yet more technology), would all be nice, but it would be even
sweeter if BRP took all the lessons learned from this site and their dealer claims and
fixed design flaws. If they put a bigger engine on them, they better give us the
shaft.....Oh wait.....ROTFL.:yikes:

I agree on the need for a 6th gear. I had to drop to 4th gear just to maintain 75 mph on the interstate in Kansas. I doubt a 6th gear would be helpful in day to day riding if the engine can't turn the wheel over without lugging. You barley get into 5th at most highway speeds.

Sixth gear would not help you in that situation. You already seem to need more revs, not less. I don't know what kind of wind you may have been bucking, but you should easilyu have been able to maintain 75 at 5500 rpm in fifth gear. I suspect you have a problem with your Spyder. Could be a bad spark plug wire, running too lean due to a bad sensor or ECM, or valve problems. You seem to be down on power, and should have it looked into. I had the same issue with my 2010, but my 2011 purrs down the highway effortlessly in fifth.

The RT was lugging trying to get up the hills on I-70 in 5th. If anyone has rode I-70 just west of Topeka you know how steap the hills are. I needed to drop down to 4th just to get enough torque and not shake the RT apart. On flat land it did the 1500 mile ride just fine but if I drop the rpm's back down into the low 5000s with a 6th gear I feel I will right back below the torque range. I think with a 6th gear I would have to downshift an every little hill.

The belt was aligned and set to the correct tension before we left. The RT runs great and seem faster than my old GS, it may be that it is much smoother when on the throttle.

I really think you should have your Spyder looked at. The engine is certainly not "lugging" at 5500 rpm. You have a misfire, cylinder imbalance, or possibly a vibration issue of some nature (motor mount, belt, etc.). The engine shouldn't shake your eyeteeth out or run out of throttle or power at that speed, going up any allowable grade on an Interstate. I'd be knocking on the dealer's door.

I downshift to 4th on those also, not sure what the grade is on some of those, only vehicle i have that doesnt downshift on those grades is the F350 with the 7.3L Diesel and it eats that grade up and loves it.

The silhouetted photo used in the 2013 preview announcement may or may not be of the hybrid prototype, but who says they would have to use an authentic photo of the new model?

Don't y'all think the spelling of sweep ST akes is the real clue here?

If it turns out to be a compromise between sport and touring I will be very interested in finally making my purchase!
