"A haboob (Arabic (http://www.spyderlovers.com/wiki/Arabic_language): هَبوب‎ "strong wind") is a type of intense duststorm (http://www.spyderlovers.com/wiki/Dust_storm) carried on an atmospheric gravity current (http://www.spyderlovers.com/wiki/Gravity_current). Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world." Living near Phoenix we get to see these several times a year. Imagine a wall of sand 1 mile high and 30 miles wide.

They featured a piece on the sand storms on Serial Killer Earth about a week ago. They showed some good "haboobs" in Phoenix and the Middle East as well. Don't think I would want to be caught in one of those storms.

I think that dust devils are like mini tornadoes as opposed to the wall of sand coming at you.

Yeah, you had to see me go, when I saw one of those coming my way. It was a race to see who would make it to my house first. I got home and it hit before I could get the garage door down. No fun breathing in that crud, not to mention the fact that they are completely blinding. :mad:

My name for dirt/dust devils is dirtnados. Once when I lived in FL six of my coworkers and I had just had our lunch orders delivered to our table at an outdoor cafe. Suddenly a dirtnado formed in an empty lot across the street and quickly came our way. It knocked over our table and umbrella dumping all of the lunches in one unfortunate guys lap. It was a little freaky.

In Yakima i watched dust Devils take out CP tents, and once a full Lister bag.
There quite common in the Yakima desert, Sometimes five or six an afternoon.

Now do these storms actually have enough velocity to them that the dirt acts like a large-scale sandblaster and damages stuff? :yikes:
Do you need to remove air cleaners and tap them out??

I've had to do it a couple of times when we got stuck in one in our cars. It's just best to pull over to a safe location and shut off the engine and ride them out. They can get bad enough, you can only see one car length ahead and one time I was sitting in a lot with it hitting my truck on the right side. When we got home, my wife opened the door and the running board was loaded up above the door line with dirt. So yes, tapping out the air filter is a really good idea if you find yourself in the thick of it.

Bob, for you to find out the answer to this you would have to leave the office and take a road trip!

Nothing was ever mentioned about leaving your wife behind. It would be best if she was on the seat behind you.

:shocked::shocked: :gaah:
Think about it for just a moment... Why on earth would I want to ride through a sandblaster with her on the back reminding me of just how dumb of an idea she thought it was from the start? :roflblack:
