on our trip to durango i made it a point to get non-ethnol gas after 2 stops filling up with this gas there was no difference in gas milage or perfomance has anybody else tried riding with non-ethnol to see if there was diff in my opinion it wasn't worth the extra money to go out of the way to get it.anyone else have a opinion or tried this?. thanks

I don't know if its ethanol related or not but as soon as I got released from California gas and put Arizona, Utah, and Colorado fuel in, my MPG shot up 5 miles while towing a trailer.

I have had the identical experience. I always blamed the ethanol. When I got to Illinois where they sell 15 % ethanol my gas mileage got worse. It did not take me two tanks to see the difference.

Pure ethonal has only 2/3 energy content of pure gasoline by volume. So it is logical to assume that a 15% blend you should lose 5% of your milage.

Bob, so glad you added the link to your blog. Its been a while since I've read them. You have a unique style of writing, like a travel magazine, that makes the reader want to go to the locations you have been to. I remember your blogs prior to the 09 Owners Event where we first met. Keep up the good words and good health.

However, if you are getting 30 MPG, this would only account for a difference of 1.5 MPG. I know the difference was greater than that in my RS (I only have 1K on the Spyder, so mileage would be expected to improve but the difference was impressive). Have also noticed at least a 10% improvement on my RAM truck. Since the difference in price for me is only .10 a gallon, it definitely makes sense to use the non-ethanol, but the main reason I use it is to avoid the hygroscopic effects of ethanol in the event that I have to leave it for any significant length of time.

I have no way of testing the effect of ethonal vs. non-ethonal gas. I live in the province of Ontario and I can buy 15% ethonal but regular and premium gas can contain up to 10% ethonal without being marked. The only assumption I can make is that premium will contain 10% ethonal because it is a cheaper way of boosting octane. It is good to know that mileage will suffer more with ethonal then the energy numbers may sugest.

on our trip to durango i made it a point to get non-ethnol gas after 2 stops filling up with this gas there was no difference in gas milage or perfomance has anybody else tried riding with non-ethnol to see if there was diff in my opinion it wasn't worth the extra money to go out of the way to get it.anyone else have a opinion or tried this?. thanksI have found it makes a definite differance things start quicker throttle responce is instant and a little increase in mileage iv'e seen 40 plus on an RS also it won't breakdown as fast when it sits, corn gas is bad in as little as 60 to 90 days

I have no doubt that the pure gas gives better performance and milage. I almost always use pure gas but on my recent trip to Reno I had to use what I could get. My MPG average dropped by 1.5 over all. I put in an additive that is supposed to improve this but if it did then the drop was even worse. The Power difference is subtle but I could feel it... off the line, up a hill or passing was horrible. Some of this had to be related to altitued as well, when I got back to the coast but still using the blended fuel my power was significantly better again.

Not sure I would drive out of my way, but when I can I use the real stuff.

Bob, so glad you added the link to your blog. Its been a while since I've read them. You have a unique style of writing, like a travel magazine, that makes the reader want to go to the locations you have been to. I remember your blogs prior to the 09 Owners Event where we first met. Keep up the good words and good health.

My Number one and only Fan! Thanks for the kind words. I am going to be off like a prom dress as of next weekend so stay tuned. I am going East until I hit triple digets or get rained on.

Pure ethonal has only 2/3 energy content of pure gasoline by volume. So it is logical to assume that a 15% blend you should lose 5% of your milage.
Yeah that all makes sense. I could take a 5 % hit and understand why. But 10% ethanol costs me 10 % mileage. 15% ethanol cost me 15% mileage. I guess burning pure ethanol I would get zero mileage. It doesn't make sense but then nothing about ethanol makes sense. The physics just don't add up.

I always stay away from ethanol unless I can use lower octane fuel in my car. Fueling the spyder is always min 91 octane fuel or higher if I can get it and the spyder runs awesome !!. My wife's new car is a Mazda 3 with skyactiv technology and it gets awesome fuel economy on pump reg octane 87 ethanol gas. The owners manual tells you to use 87 octane gas

Definite improvement for me....I have a non ethanol pump in my home town so I have run the "vs" comparison on at least 4 different "tests"....non ethanol gives me anywhere from 1.2 to 2.3 mpg improvement...difference usually (in my opinion) is how active the right hand is!!!!:clap:

ethanol is crap...another 'green' idea that fails miserably. BTW, you're still burning a carbon based fuel so emissions are not better anyway....argh! :banghead:

You end up spending more on fuel as ethanol is far less efficient...

It takes 3 gallons of petroleum based fuel to grow two gallons of ethanol. I guess they expect to make it up in volume. To replace foreign oil imports with ethanol would require planting 98 % of the US in corn. Of course then we would not need gasoline because the entire country would look like corn and what would be the point of going any where. Oh I know-we could drive out and look at the derelict windmills that are polluting the countryside out west.

You cannot legislate the laws of physics.

"BTW, you're still burning a carbon based fuel so emissions are not better anyway....argh!"

Just because a fuel is carbon based does not mean emissions are the same (far from it) compare coal to natural gas. Both are carbon based but one's emissions (NG) are almost entirely CO2 (which only the EPA could consider a pollutant, plants see it as dinner) and water vapor. The other's emissions have CO, Benzene, and lots of heavy hydrocarbon residual mess. The idea of ethanol though, has nothing to do with "green" energy, but rather "renewable" energy, which somehow gets lumped in the same basket.

"I guess they expect to make it up in volume. To replace foreign oil imports with ethanol would require planting 98 % of the US in corn."

Another problem with ethanol from corn (as though being inefficient and hygroscopic weren't enough) is that the actual ear of corn is used, meaning that corn is grown strictly for ethanol production, reducing the available food supply. Even if we really, really, wanted ethanol, producing it from corn makes no sense other than that there are a lot of corn farmers (who vote) in the U.S. Ethanol from sugar cane is produced from what is leftover after the juice is squeezed from the cane. The fuel still is less efficient, but at least it doesn't delete food stores.

Corn is a horrible and inefficient way to go...period...the switch grass and sugar cane they use in Brazil is far better....regardless, ethanol is ethanol, and it just isn't as efficient as the real stuff...

I think hydrogen is the way to go...we just need a little more technology as the stuff passes through almost everything...meaning, it's hard to have a tank that can contain it long-term...

Every year, we looked forward to delicious local corn for great prices, but ever since it's been used for fuel, lousy fuel at that, the prices for corn has been through the roof and the quality of edible corn equally as bad. Using food as fuel is always a bad idea. All we have to do now is make sure we reduce enough CO2 to kill plant life and we're all in trouble. CO2 a pollutant.... Bahhhh....

My manual says 87 octane or higher. I live in Kansas and Hyvee has 91 octane, no ethanol. Just filled up with it today. Haven't gone far enough to tell. I'll let you know if I notice a difference.

My understanding is that ethanol left in your vehicle for prolonged periods will start to eat away at the seals. Is this true? If so, what would be difference between leaving it for long periods of time and constantly refilling it with ethanol based products?

I don't know if its ethanol related or not but as soon as I got released from California gas and put Arizona, Utah, and Colorado fuel in, my MPG shot up 5 miles while towing a trailer.

Brian, I think it had more to do with the altitude than the gas. I had a passenger which I never had before and was towing my trailer and I got better gas mileage than I ever have. Also with the route we took I was at lower speed 65 - 70 than I would be on an expressway so that helped also.

Ehanol is hygroscopic, if it sits it attracts water. Once water is added, microbes can grow, and the addition of the microbes adds to the corrosive nature of the ethanol.
