Aussie Police Cycle

had to put some of these pics here. While this is not a Spyder, this is awesome work that was pulled together from scratch in about 8 weeks. DocDru would be jealous :). This is a Honda based bike that has, among other things: Sirens, lights, Active License Plate Recognition (Number Plate for the Aussies), can do finger print lookups, facial recognition, and other data based stuff. This WAS showing at the Gold Coast Expo Center this week.A team from WA (Western Australia) in Perth brought the bike and the car to the Gold Coast (LA to DC in USA equivalent) to show off the technology. They had been pulling the pieces together but about 8 weeks ago decided they would have it ready and show it this week, so... it was a HUGE effort and it works. They DO have a few issues with power when everything is running (suggested the added battery route many have done). And this is the first generation. It WILL get much better over the coming months as they roll this out.

The WA police guys were VERY keen to see pics of Darth (my Spyder). I told them there are Aussie ryders all over. So WA guys... make yourselves known to the coppers out there! They'd love to see your bikes to get ideas for police vehicles!

For those that may care- my day job is leading a software company that manages all of the towers and networks that guys like this use to communicate with their 2-way radios. Motorola is our biggest customer and in Australia, we have 4 of the 5 states as customers.

IF everything goes well, tomorrow afternoon or Friday I hope to hook up with Martin (mrb, http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/member.php?1132-mrb ) for a coffee and a visit!

Honda ST1300. I had an 1100, I remember it fondly.
Very comfortable long distance bike. Also very popular with the Law Enforcement agencies.

The police in London Ontario tried a Spyder out for 6 months as a test . Didn't work out as the Spyder wasn't as maneuverable as the Honda's that they are keeping.

Had a lovely 90 minute visit with Martin & wife Marion (mrb, http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/member.php?1132-mrb ). Martin helps bring in lots of Spyder accessories from the US and Canada to OZ and is pretty much the Lamonster equivalent over here, running http://spyderryders.net.au/ . We also share a passion for real estate development so it was a fun afternoon at Starbucks. No ryding though... lots of rain and heavy winds. I need to remember to send them some SpyderFest shirts! Great folks....

While I'm posting.... This is the view from my apartment while I've been here this week. This is my last morning in OZ for this trip. This is from my apartment balcony. This is right between the Great Barrier Reef and the Tasman Sea looking East toward New Zealand. If you look really closely, you can see about 15 boats and about 100 people in the water. This is the warm up the annual All Australia Surf Life Saving Championship event next week. They expect 8000 lifeguards from around the country to compete in 300 events. I took this about 7:30am Friday my time. It's now 1:30pm and the beach is loaded with long boats, speed surf boards and teams competing. Warm ups for next week.

HAAAAA!!!! We talked about it! I had my iPad and showed them pics and like good cycle guys the kept asking questions and wanted to see more! Flattering for sure, but mostly about the fact that all of us are in a 'club' that others want to be in, ya know?! Even cops.

Final post on this topic....

Everyone knows I'm a tech junkie. I work in a bleeding edge high tech industry so I gravitate to geeky stuff.

The image below is from my seat 19B on the double decker Airbus A380. The top image is from the onboard entertainment system. They have a camera in the tail so you can see where the plane is going, live. I took this about 2 hours west of LAX.

The bottom image is my iPad. I logged on to the satellite Internet at 41,000 feet, and brought up a live camera image that looks at the construction site for our building.
