View Full Version : Any way to get a sportbike sound out of the Spyder's Rotax?

Just curious... seems like 99% of Spyder owners with aftermarket exhausts are chasing the HD rumble sound.

I was wondering, are there any exhaust options out there that take the Spyder into a sportbike direction?

I know that you'll never get that beautiful VFR V4 sportbike sound out of a V-Twin, but are there other exhaust options out there that *don't* emphasize the rumbling?

You could always just record the sounds of an Apriia at full song and play it on your IPod... :roflblack:
It's a heckuva lot cheaper than a lot of other options!

Hahaha... I was thinking of hooking up external speakers and running "Ride of the Valkyries" on loop all day long.

Don't forget to add the Napalm spray. "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.....It smells like victory"

By the way, I passed a Spyder on Pleasant Valley in Loudon County a couple of weeks ago, any chance that was you?

May have been... I don't recall when I was out that way, maybe a month ago checking out houses for sale in the Brambleton area, was out riding Toll Road/Greenway/28/etc. I try to fly under the radar, I'll have to try harder :doorag: :joke:

They can chase all they want, But until they put a 45 degree Push rod engine in it their just making noise.
The potato/potato sound comes from the engine not the pipes.

Is it "Po-TAY-To" or "Po-TAH-To"? :roflblack:

 Nice sound!
Have you ever come across a set of pipes that takes it up into that high-pitched "Indy Car" screaming sound???

Almost any pipe would do it.....if you can add ten cylinders and twist the engine to 20 grand. :roflblack:

You may think that people are chasing the HD sound with aftermarket exhausts, but that's kinda hard to avoid since they are both V-Twins. I don't know of any sportbike that is a V-Twin, so its kinda impossible without major mods to get the sportbike sound....and would you really want to?

My Dad used to fly Mosquitos and my Uncle flew Lancasters and I can still remember that beautiful sound.
I recall a flying show at Hatfield (home of de Haviland) and a flight of Lancs escorted by Spits flew over....wow.

You don't consider Aprilia, Ducati, Cagiva, Bimota, Buell, Honda RC51/Super Hawk, Suzuki TL and SV series sportbikes?

I have the HMF on my Rotax Buell, no additional silencer that I know of. It's seems louder with more of a crack to the exhaust note than the Hindle.

Most sport bikes are Japanese built V4s or inline 4s and they make power pretty high up in the power band, as Scotty mentioned. The Buells and Ducs have a different note but even their exhausts are tuned a bit differently. The V990 is just not that sort of engine, so I'm not so sure it's doable. But there are some good cans out there that can produce a very nice note. That YouTube thing-a-ma-jigger has a number of clips that have different cans hooked up to Spyders for your listening pleasure! I have to select a replacement can myself at some point, so I'm in the same boat. At the moment I have no idea which one I'm going to go with. Anything but a crap Hindle!

:yikes: I was thinking maybe just a wee bit more practical than the "Tim Allen" approach! :roflblack:

Thanks all for the comments/suggestions!

I'm officially agnostic on this: I love the HD rumble as much as I love the sportbike wheeee! whine. I admit to finding it incongruous that I have a bike under me that spools up to over 9000 RPM and *doesn't* make that sportbike sound, it just kind freaks me out :).

I don't think I'll be changing out the exhaust on my bike anyway- coming up on my one year anniversary of ownership, I feel like I've put PLENTY of $$$ into the Spyder already. I mean, who puts EVEN MORE money into their bikes?

http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_18_7.gif I'm sure that I have absolutely no idea of what you're talking about. Is it legal to do these things of which you speak?? :roflblack:

Yeah, not much you can do here, it's missing 2 cylinders and shorter strokes. I believe the new newest version of the Yamaha R1 is set-up to fire like an inline V-twin. I take it you wouldn't go for a 998 single in the Spyder...I'm thumper and I know it.

i don't think it's chasing the h d sound as much as it's chasing ANY sound. the stock pipe is so DEAD. i'll put my tunable home made pipe up against anything , for a great sound. just so happens that it runs excellent too. thanks amt jim for your guidance. i'll have to make a video:lecturef_smilie:
