View Full Version : BRP SNOWMOBILE

A riding buddy of mine just got back from Maine where he also has a home. He brought back photos of his newest BRP beautiful snowmobile. (RT-S with skis) It is white with a 1,500cc Rotax! He bought it January of 2011 and said he only had it up to 80 mph...and it had more to go....Hey, drop that 1,500cc puppy in a Spyder and .....away we go!

1500 cc Rotax is worth considering. Maybe they are pre-testing the engines for the 2013's.

If I'm not mistaken the engines their snowmobiles are Rinky Dinks, ie, Two Strokes.
My son has two of them, When he starts them up, Think second hand smoke and a lot of it.:yikes:

He must mean the 4-Tech 1200cc 4 stroke that puts out 130 HP.
Its there biggest Snow Engine.
My Sea Doo 1500cc 4-Tech puts out 255 HP at 8,100 rpms.
It would be Nice to see them add 12-15 HP on the RT to attrack more people.:hun:

BRP played with a one litre Vee-Twin years ago in their sleds... They do cross-pollinate their other machines with whatever they develop! :2thumbs:
Two-strokes are pretty much being phased out in sledding... :gaah: (Nothing ever sounds as good as one of them coming up on the pipes!)

When I got my 2010 Spyder..my first thought on my first ryde (up and down my drive-way) was OMG this is just like when I used to drive our snowmobiles. Early 1970 Ski-Doos (made by Bombadier (sp), now BRP) we had an Elan (similar to today's RS Spyders) and a Nordic (similar to the RT)...had many, many wonderful hours of use...lived at the base of Mt. Adams in WA state...we would step out our door...pack the little kiddies (6 months to 6 yrs) in the sled and away we would go.....Sound familiar?:clap: And now we are all making similar awesome memories on our Spyders...ramp up those memory maker times...winter a great time to plan!!! (well I know you Southern folk don't have that downtime..you just get to ryde, ryde, ryde :ohyea:)

I just got done looking at the 2012 Ski Doos...
That 1200 is a Three cylinder engine... it won't fit in the current Spyder chassis without extensive tinkering! :gaah:

Ah, the Elans... If you could keep one upright it meant that you could ride anything!

Oh yea the Elan...FUN FUN FUN..and not always upright...but them 20 yr old bodies just loved it...the Nordic was the "family" machine...stable+...the kid's dad and I would run for the Elan...and whoever lost got to drive the family machine!!!!

I started sledding in 1967... My first machine was an Olympique...
In '68 I got a Super Olympique: 16 Rompin' Stompin' horsepower! I felt giddy from all of the power...
The neighbors got an Elan in 1971 If ever there was such a thing as motorized snowshoes, this was it!
My Mom rode the Nordic 371...

Our family had a 1974 Ski-doo Elan 250E (electric start) single cylinder engine. The other was a 1971 Chaparrel heavy as a tank that was hard to start. Had lots of family fun snowmobiling over the years.
The new Hybrid spyder Brp is developing uses their new four stroke 600ACE engine currently and first used in 2011 Ski-doo models. http://www.gizmag.com/can-am-spyder-roadster-hybrid-to-make-public-debut/17650/

So Bob Denman here is some cross pollination for you

I only know what he told me. I did not ask if it was a 2 cyl or 4....The only thing I know about ski doos is they have funny looking front wheels....and you don't put air in them...

Memories 1972 Artic Cat 440 Panther. The biggest problem was keeping springs in the track chassis. They couldn't take the cold weather. Would snap and then you were flat to the ground. Still were fun to ride.:ohyea:

I've got the 1200cc Skidoo gtx se. I goes like crazy. But i Tell all of you the 990cc in the spyder is great. My 1200cc does nothing but overheat. I had to buy a rad kit for it to help the cooling situation. Beside all that, I still love it.

My son has two of them, When he starts them up, Think second hand smoke and a lot of it.:yikes:My ski-doo's don't smoke that much except when I first start them up after storage and they have to clear themselves of the fogging oil.

The Rotax E-TEC 2 stroke doesn't smoke at all and has best gas mileage in it's class. 2 stroke puts out much more HP in a small package. My 600 puts out over 100 HP.

The new Ski Doo's use around 30 % less oil than their prior models. Two strokes are still strong in their line up. I'm still not ready for a 4 stroke sled.
I've been on the trails long enough to see all the names burn. The cause is what you worry about, some people have done work that has contributed to such issues. Not accusing anyone just relaying a story (loose fuel line) I knew about.
They all make very good sleds, I just think Ski Doo makes a great one and has had some real engineering break throughs.
Have been riding them for over 20 years.
Sorry to see that one burn.

Bob Denman
11-17-2011, 09:03 AM
:agree: But I do think that four-strokes will eventually come to rule the roost in the snomobile marketplace... BRP's two-strokes with SDI have helped keep the two-strokes viable, but... :dontknow:

I bleed green, but seeing any sled burn is sad...I've only owned 1 Doo, a 06 MXZ600 HO. Had it for 400 miles and sold it. Liked the sled, but the way the foot wells pointed inwards made it very uncomfortable on my knees. Could only ride it for 30 mi and I was in pain.

So Arntu's got you bleeding that "Arctic Cat" green...
When I was riding Yamaha streetbikes and Polaris snowmobiles, the Yammie dealer used to explain my preferences to his friends whenever I showed up for a snowmobile ride with a quick, "Forgive him; He's ignorant!"

Well that sure had to have pronounced effects on whatever they had out there in the wind...
The Orange Kitty had the advantage of better traction; the Ski Doo was on pure ice from start to stop while she hadt he benefit of some snow for traction!

But who cares??? :2thumbs:

I personally have owned just three brands, ski-doo, Rupp and Arctic Cat. But I remember the 60's and 70's where it seemed like there were literally 100 manufacturers of sleds.

Which one??
I had a 76 Range whip and a 79 Sting...
I've got a cousin here who was a dealer very early on... He had the 11th Trail-a-Sled ever built...:thumbup: Stored up in the rafters of his garage!

It was a 79 sting that I got used. Got it in the late 80's and rode the crap out of that thing...Also had a JD JDX..that was a tank..didnt want to get that thing stuck:gaah:.. Also had a 60? something HD with a matching trailer...

Wow!! Thanks for the memories!! :2thumbs:
Skiroules Scotty?
Nice sleds: the RTXs were decently quick...
We had a 1973 RTW... Wankel power!
It was a climbing fool, but broke about every trail ride we ever took it on. A very frustrating machine... :gaah: But when it ran...

MXZ- you left out Motor Ski; bought out by Bombadier back in 71. Those things would climb anything

My mistake. I see you had it listed under Bombadier.

My mistake. I see you had it listed under Bombadier.
I didn't list anything. That is a copy and paste.

I would still be typing if I had made that list out myself.:roflblack:
