Ohio Stadium (at the Ohio State University) is commonly known as the "Horseshoe" or simply "Shoe". The original configuration of the stadium looked like a horseshoe, as it had an open end at the west end zone. It was completely closed a few years back to allow more folks to see the Bucks play, but it's still called the Shoe. Possibly the most recognizable building in Ohio, although the NFL Hall of Fame's pretty distinctive as well.

:agree:

Spot on about the NFL hall of fame.

That was a very fun gathering, except for 1 Spyder. But boy was it hot on that asphalt. :yikes:

The seating with the BLOCK O was temporary seating in years past. They would erect bleachers at the south end at the beginning of each football season. When the season was over, the bleachers came down. In a fly over, the stadium looked like a giant horseshoe, hence the nicknames "horse shoe" and "shoe". There was also a track that ran around the field so that track events could also be held in the stadium. In those days (with the temporary bleachers) the stadium would hold around 85,000 people.

They built a shell around the old stadium that allowed them to install seating higher up (the top gray ring). If you look at the main entrance to the stadium (the north side - bottom center of the picture) you can see the main entrance to the stadium as well as get some idea where the exterior walls were on the old stadium. You can also easily make out the extension that allows for the new top seating.

They also removed the running track, lowered the playing field and extended the seating on the bottom rung also. Lastly, they got rid of the temporary bleachers and installed permanent seating on the south side (that is where you see the Block O). All these changes added 20,000+ seats to the stadium.

In order to maintain the name "shoe", you will notice they maintained walkways between the new south stands and the original stadium.
