What exactly is backfire. What causes it to happen. Is it preventable. Is it harmful to the bike. Every now and then my 09 SE5 drops a bomb , mostly on the left. Other than that 7800 miles running like a charm.

From historical postings, I would guess the "Y"gaskets are going bad. My SE5 started backfiring at about 8 thousand miles.

Cause can be from a bad Y gasket(s) to lean mix (performance pipe and/or high flow air filter). Too much of it will ruin your muffler and premature need to repack the muffler (or it just gets louder ... which is not exactly a bad thing :D).
