I just replaced the original rear wheel bearings on my 2009 GS at 50,200 miles. The "old" ones looked perfectly good and could have been used a while longer. How long I do not know. Since bearings are cheap and labor is not, it is mandatory to replace the bearings once the labor is incurred.

I replaced the rear wheel bearings on my 2008 GS at 34,000 miles, and they too could have gone longer. Two of the three bearings on the 2008 GS were made in China. All three of the bearings on the 2009 GS were made in the U.S.

Based on my experience, it seems that some Spyder owners may be replacing their wheel bearings sooner than necessary. Of course, how many miles you get from the bearings depends in part on how you use the Spyder.

I intend to replace my rear wheel bearings again at 100,000 miles which should be in about another year, if I still have this Spyder.

Good info. Seems many have had to replace them much sooner. Hopefully with the new lower belt tension spec they will last even longer.

I just replaced the front wheel bearings on mine as well (50,000 miles). Mine had a little play, the left side had a small flat spot. There was also some calcified material inside the bearings.

I also replaced the front ball Joints. One of the ball joints was shot. so I replaced all four.

Rear bearings were replaced at 38,000 miles.

I hope you are using the bearings made in the U.S. on your 2008 GS. The last time I looked, both part numbers were still active. In other words, BRP did not supersede the 2008 part number with the 2009 part number. The 2008 part number is 293350055. The 2009 part number is 293350067.

Here's some pics of the bearings I received just before leaving for Cuba.

2008 - clearly labeled China. 2009 - USA .

Both of the smaller ones (orange) are marked NSK 6205DU2

The USA one also has an "A01" marking, while the China one is "019"

In the side by side photo, it's almost impossible to see in the pic--- but in person there is a VERY noticeable difference in the gap on the China bearing. Doesn't seem sealed nearly as well.:cus:

Guess which ones I'll be using.

The larger bearing is marked NSK 30BD40DF2 along with a "417" on the seal.

I ordered all of mine using the 2008 part numbers as shown in the pics.

Nice job on those pics Firefly. You really can see the gap is different from the one made in China and the one made in the USA.

I dunno-- I can't see it in the pics very well at all (camera phone).. but live and in person it's really noticeable.

That's pretty interesting. Both numbers are active and both numbers provide bearings made in the U.S. I wonder why they didn't supersede the 2008 number? I am sure the spec's on the bearings are the same for both years other than the country of origin. And now, even this is the same. Good job, BRP!

Thanks for the info on the bearings and the life expectancy. It is good to have more proof that I don't need to replace the bearings when I replace the tire.
