WARNING! Read no further if you are quimish...

While following the instructions (the ones that say 1.5 hours labor each) for each the CB & entertainment harness, I have about 10-12 hours in it so far...

(BRP should have listed a 'wrecking ball' as the main tool needed)

Body panels removed:

Yes, it is an RT, not a GS...

The mess of wires on the battery are a couple of Gerbing leads that I have attached.

(Please ask the children to leave the room for the next few pics)

The saddlebag/rear trunk assembly hanging from the ceiling with the bottom side facing the camers. Notice the CB unit is attached to the front side of the right saddlebag. You'll also see a new wiring harness hanging down the left-inside of the fender. That will go across to the left side along side the existing wiring harness & flat braided ground strap.

The other end of the install...

One more pic of the crime scene...

I'm not finished yet. What you see represents most of the disassembly & much of the installation of the new components. The only thing I have left, that I know of, is the CB antenna installation. Then, 'Assemby is the reverse of disassembly'. Yeah, right...

I don't believe I've done this much, but still feel confident in the final outcome... I guess we'll see.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Just had mine installed at the shop. Couldn't believe how much they had to take apart!! It looked just like yours.

You'd think it would be offered as a factory option. It's GOTTA be a lot easier to install all that when the bike is first assembled.

It does look a lot like a GS once you get it naked. :D

Best of luck on finishing the install process.

You go little brother!!!:popcorn::popcorn:

I promise to have it back together before we take our next ride, big brother. But, that gives me a whole month.

As of a couple of hours ago, the RT is back together. All seems to be working correctly, as best as I can tell. The sound system is not very intuitive for the helmets. You have to adjust parts in the 'CB' section & the 'Audio' section of the 'Mode' screens. You can listen to your music through the headset, external speakers or both. It does not just toggle between headset & external speakers like the Goldwing. This will take some getting used too, which I will.

The reassembly actually went much faster than I had expected. The rear assembly went back on without much trouble.

Tomorrow: Installation of MC Cruise on my wife's '08 GS. After what I just went through, I believe I can do anything! :ohyea:

Glad to hear you got it back together again, and especially that it appears to be working properly.

Mark,
I do believe you understated the difficulty;). You know how it goes. I should not have read the directions, I should have just gone ahead and done the job by your pictures. If you follow the instructions, and take things apart as you go, they do not tell you that you should take everything off BOTH sides of the bike. They, nor you, mention that you have to take the air hose off (but it will come off by itself (not good!) when you remove the rear storage section.:dontknow:)

The directions are not clear where you mount the CB unit itself. Your picture is much clearer so that is where we are going to mount the CB tomorrow.

I should have left this to the dealer but did not know that when I foolishly started it this morning. I have certainly gained a broad education such as DO NOT PICK UP THE REAR SECTION by the HEATED PASSENGER GRIPS. It is not good for them!!!!!:cus:

Hopefully by tomorrow evening things will be better.

Mark, do you know if the Enetertainment Harness Kit will allow helmet speakers to be connected to the audio system? I do not want the CB. Do you have any drawings or description of the harness kit? It is hard to hear the external speakers on the highway.

Sorry, both the Entertainment Harness and the CB/Comm system are required for the helmet speakers to interface with the audio system.

I'm just impressed that you've got the ability to do something like that...with my mechanical dexterity I'd spend twice as much $$$ to correct all the mistakes I made....You Da Man!!

I have ordered the CB/Comm kit, Entertainment harness and XM radio. Making preparations for the install.

Does the main harness come with step-by-step instructions, or do you just follow your nose?

How much is the rear section estimated to weigh? (I need to prep for hoisting it up as I see in a couple of pictures.)

Just a comment. When I got serious about buying a RT-S, I talked to the tech about the CB, XM and GPS installations. His comments were "it is much easier to do these installations when we unpack the RT as much of the frame is exposed and we don't have to dismantle it again and your labor cost will be much lower". He said, "George, if I do it and they do not work properly, I will fix them free....if you do it and they do not work, I will fix them, but it won't be free....ha ha."

After reviewing my mechanical ability (none) and my tool box (a 10" phillips head screwdriver and a ten pound sledge hammer), I made the wise decision to let him do it. This was one of my better life decisions. Thanks, Mark!

Unfortunately, someone steered you wrong. Hope your dealer has one, but would think they'll likely have to order it...

Good luck!

I just spent $1652 to have the same components installed (with the parts). Glad I didn't try it. :yikes:
