We are busy around here getting things ready to go for Daytona. While all of my gear should fit in the trunk, I figured my wife might need some more space. This type of space is not needed all the time, so I did not really want to go with permanently mounted bags. After reading some threads on this forum, and doing a little research, I decided on an option I felt would meet our needs wonderfully.

Here is the rest of the story.

I ordered these directly from the Nelson-Rigg web site, on Saturday February 13, 2010, and they arrived on Friday, February 19, in this box:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7820

I opened the box to find the saddlebags packaged quite nicely:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7821

The folks at Nelson-Rigg were kind enough to include a 2009 catalog, which has many more products that I might now be interested in:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7822

The packaging also included the instructions, along with a lifetime warranty card:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7823

When you first remove the bags from the packaging, they are squished:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7824

This is a top view of the still squished bags and you can see the wide velcro mounting straps:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7825

Each bag also came with its own waterproof cover:

The first step is to install the stiffener in the bags to make them semi-rigid.

This is one of the stiffeners starting to go into place:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7827

This is the bag with the stiffener fully installed, and it is no longer squishy:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7828

This is the side of the bag that has a neoprene panel to protect the bikes finish:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7829

Each bag also included a shoulder strap for easier carrying:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7832

This is a side view of one of the bags with the stiffener installed:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7831

This is a picture of the bottom which has an Aluminzed Heat Shield to protect the bags from your exhaust pipes:

Still more to follow...

To mount the saddlebags you lift the seat of the Spyder, and pull the large velcro straps across the machine:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7833

Each bag also has a couple of auxiliary buckles that can be looped through the foot peg brackets and buckled down for added stability. Here is the right bag mounted on the Spyder:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7834

This is the left bag mounted on the Spyder:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7835

This is what the rear of the Spyder looks like with the saddlebags installed:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7836

This is the right saddlebag with the rain cover installed. This cover should also work well to protect them against road dirt.
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7837

We already had the Can-Am Rear Seat and Console Bags, so my wife went ahead and mounted them as well:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=658&pictureid=7838

And here she is, all loaded down and ready for the trip to Daytona in a couple of weeks:

Overall we are very happy with the bags at this point. We went for a decent ride today, and the bags stayed in place as they should and worked out very well. If you are thinking about doing something like this, I would recommend these Nelson-Rigg bags without any hesitation. They also have a bunch of other styles to choose from, to include ones with solar panels which really got the attention of the geek in me.

The ones they sell with the solar panels come with a bunch of adapters for charging your phone, mp3 player, possibly GPS, and any other small electronic devices like that.

These saddlebags do not have solar panels on them.

I really like the look of those.

Can those bags be mounted a little farther back? I have the passenger foot peg extensions, but I'm not sure if they place the passenger's feet far enough forward to clear the bags. :dontknow:

Yes, they could be mounted a little further back as well. I actually started out mounting them where they were right up against the rear turn signals, and my wife decided to move them forward some. It is her Spyder, and she is going to be the pack mule, so her decisions win out on this issue. :D

Cool! I guess I know my next mod! :D

I was thinking about the CL850 bags, but these look sportier...not as square, but they hold less. I can live with that.

When mounting them further back, do both velcro straps still go under the seat?

Not as secure, but is there a way to mount them with the straps "over" the seat? I only ask because I like a much further back position than what you have shown.

I have to admit that I did not show her any other styles. I figured with the trunk, rear seat bag, console bag, and these saddlebags, she should have plenty of storage for her stuff. ;)

Yes, they can still go under the seat. It might be possible to go over the seat as well, but I did not try that. We also have the sport rack with back rest coming in, and the new arm rests from ISCI, so I wanted to make sure these were going to ride under the hand grips and not be in the way of those items. :)

They also sell another large square bag, CL-800, that could sit on the seat. If you get that, then you can run the velcro straps under it and it has buckles for hooking it to the saddlebags. That would definitely keep them from going anywhere.

Here is a direct link to their CL-Luggage series:

http://www.nelsonrigg.com/store/Nelson-Rigg_CL_Luggage.aspx

Hope that helps.

I bought the NR-950s and while the quality was very good I could not get them far enough back to accomodate a passenger. Even if I relocated the turn signals to move the bags further back the back strap on the bag would have to wrap around the back rest and I thought that looked pretty cheesey. Returned them and bought the R-35s which also have more room.

You have to play with them a bit to bet them to fit with a passenger but it does work. The back of her legs was resting on them but they did not push her feet off the pegs so she was good with it. I have used mine for over 15K miles, no problems.

I have a pair of Nelson-Riggs CL950 softbags for sale. They are in great shape less a loose velcro tab on the top cover flap. They also include the extension straps (provided by Nelson-R) for mounting over the seat if desired. Also includes the rain covers. I installed the Givi hard bags so I no need for the soft. $60 plus shipping. I'm in california.

Patches, thanks for jumping in and explaining they can be mounted further back to accomodate a passenger. I am not able to check the forum from work, something to do with not wanting to waste your tax dollars and such. :D

I probably should have taken better pictures of the side compartments as well. Each bag is identical, and the middle side pocket has the holders in it like you find in suitcases where you can carry your toiletries and such.

I think any of their bags would be an excellent choice, especially if you are looking for something you will not leave on the Spyder all the time. They are also a much more economical choice than the rigid bags.

As for someone possibly stealing them. If you have the straps mounted under the seat, I think it would be pretty hard to get them out of there without being able to lift the seat. Other than that it would be like anything else you may leave sitting on your Spyder, do so at your own risk. ;)

We had ours covering the turnsignals and the straps still worked fine under the seat. You must adjust the length of the post on the seat latch to make it longer to compensate for the thickness of the straps. I tried it without adjusting the seat latch, and had to slam the seat down, and then had to slam my fist on the seat while actuating the key to get the seat to pop up.

Thanks for that info, as always it seems that I missed out on another great deal. :dontknow:

Does anyone know if the CL-950/1000 will fit with the Two Brothers dual exhaust?

If the dual exhaust comes up much higher than the rear foot pegs, I am not sure. The 950's have the curve and alumishied to protect them from the exhaust, but I am still would not want the bag sitting within an inch or two of it. I have not seen the dual set up so don't have anything to compare it with.

Patches posted above on how they can work with a passenger. Their legs will ride against them, but perhaps that could be mitigated with the extensions for the passenger pegs. :dontknow:

Yeap, I have to mount them on later today as I have softball practice and put my stuff in the bags. I rarely ride with them on unless I have a passenger or going on a trip for more than 2 days. Angie rides on the back typically when I am gone that long. She has riden back there with the bags for over 8 hours of riding a day on long trips with no problems. I would think the passenger externsion would much improve the useablity of these type bags but Angie is not able to reach the pegs if I extend them without sitting on my back, she is only 5ft. Will post a picture later but I have had these bags for almost 2 years now with no problems. I don't leave them on as they are not the most appealing thing in the world but they get me to point A->B with my stuff dry.
One key part, looking at the picture provided, I move BOTH straps on the inside of the handle grips and my bags go on top of my read turn lights and not in front of them. I think there is great risk for the lights to come off with a passenger pushing the bags back against the lights rather the bags resting on the outside of the lights. Hope that makes sense but this is the only way the bags will go back far enough to make them usefull with a passenger without the weight of the bags resting on the bag of thier legs.
I am going to purchase a light kit to make these light more flush to the body anyway, I think they look a bit silly sticking out the way they do now, like be ears. Great people can see them but I have enough other lights on there now that I am not too concerned with it now.

DynamoBT
03-08-2010, 01:54 PM
Can't wait to see a picture with both saddlebag straps going through the handgrips.

I'm not sure I understand the "on top" of the rear lights. But I do definitely understand that a passenger's leg would be pusshing the bags back into the lights if the bags aren't high enough or far enough back.

Aesthetically, I think the bags would look better farther up and back too.

TIA for taking the time to post a picture of how you have the bags mounted.

I have to say that I ordered these bags on your recommendation and based on your pictures and I love them. I have yet to fully utilize them and I feel like I have plenty of carrying capacity now.

The only complaint I had was getting the stiffener things in so that they don't just collapse. That sucked a lot. It took me a good couple hours to do all three bags (I also bought the roll bag for the passenger seat, since I ride alone) and I was -so- sore afterward. Holy cow.

However, they look fantastic and as I said -- plenty of room to carry whatever.

Yea, the stiffeners are a tight fit but they have to be this way so they do not collapse and loose the shape of the bag. Would love to see some photos when you have a chance.

I just received my CL 950's and when I tried to install them found out that one set of straps fits over the other one but only about halfway (short), the other set will not even reach each other.. Did you guys use some kind of extensions? By the way they look great, I want to install them...

Oh yes, one more thing, found out that the inserts go in much easier if you start from the tallest side (the side that mounts to the front of the Spyder)...

Same question.

When placed under the seat, they do not need to meet by very much at all to hold them in place. If you are trying to get the entire velcro tabs to fully connect, that is not going to happen.
