I have put together a Scavenger Hunt that I thought would be fun to do in 2010. I've tried to make it so that ryders from all countries can participate. I am going to try to get some of our sponsors to contribute prizes for 1st through 3rd Place and Most Unique Picture. I will not be eligible to participate as I will tally the points and judge the results.

This "game" could involve as many as 100 photos per entry. Thinking that, rather than using this site, participants can use whatever photo posting site they prefer. Just need to post the link on this site so they can be viewed.

Participation can be solo or it could involve a group of ryders. BUT, each participant must have pictures of their Spyder with the item.

Time period to complete is 1 January through 30 September 2010. NO CHEATING...don't Google for pics LOL

Anyone up for it? Check out the list below

This sounds like it could be kind of fun, and would also force me to carry my camera a lot more.

For clarification on number 16, does the police officer need to be writing you a real ticket that sticks? :D

I'd never know the difference. However, staging photos is sort of cheating. Like Photoshopping the picture (Got that Tat? :roflblack:)

Okay, Irish,

Let's hope the prizes get this one more traction than 'Spyders in Strange Places'... In any case, I'll play along.

I hope you have either a lot of hair or no hair at all. If this gets traction you will be pulling out all your hair to keep the contestant scores straight.nojoke I guess that's what spreadsheets and databases are designed for to save hair. Does look like fun.:D

like it - good idea ..
just to understand for me - is it possible to get more points for one pic..
so if i park by an indian reservation - a policeman writes a ticket (to fast) - a watertower in the back.. like that
on the other side the points should be doubled if you have a nice passenger on the spyder - like on the example -pic !!
(I`m married with this wonderful girl - our 26 wedding day is tomorrow -
did 13.000 spyder-mls in-the-rain over-the-mountains..but with her there is always a sunshine)

You can use a single pic to satisfy multiple requirements as long as each item is clearly identified.

Sounds like fun. It is safe to assume we will use the honor policy so that these pictures all have to happen in 2010. For example, I know I have some of these photos already from our previous journeys but those wouldn't count, correct. Everything has to be fresh and new. I will make sure and set the date on my camera, I'm not sure I can date the photo on my iphone but I will see what kind of app I can find. This will be fun.

A quick scan of the required items reveals several that may preclude us Downunder. Downunder, an Indian Reservation is a table pre-booked at an Indian Restaurant. However we have do have native areas (Aboriginal - Koori c/f Eskimo - Inuit). International border crossing is also a bit of an issue. But we will try our best.

Deb....That'd be great! I might do the same. I told Ron that I was looking for something in the $100 range.

What I have planned is to total up the points in September and rank everyone that participated. Then break ties by the uniqueness of the picture (my opinion...no arguing with the official :roflblack:) Then have a list of the prizes and let the winners choose by order of ranking. Then the winner contacts the donor directly to claim. Sound reasonable?

(LAX)Los Angeles International Airport #19 might not be to keen on people taking pictures around there, but on the upside I guess I could get #15 and possibly #16. ;) Are there extra points for being handcuffed and carted away with lights and sirens? In all seriousness noting there is heightened security levels please be careful taking pictures at airports and international border crossings.

Tried to get officer (lady officer) to take a picture on spyder and write me a FI ticket but officer would not. NancysToy you could be correct. Driver was broken down in a park and ride i saw vehicle then b-line to get a picture. He informed me what the vehicle was but later on i could only remember year was 24 or 34 remember a "4", ford model ??. "T" was my first choice.

You would be correct by saying 193? Ford Model A. It was a nice vehicle. I talked with him for 10 minutes. He inherited vehicle car from his dad and while towing vehicle back his truck broke down.

A,B,C maybe called sequential order and A,C,E is alphabetical order. Alphabetical order is an indexing process using a list of items normally following alphabet set as standard for ordering.

List of vowels are normally shown in alphabetical order.

Same can happen with numbers.

I am pleased to announce that Ron at R/T Sales (Spyder City) is going to donate a prize for the Scavenger Hunt. Hopefully, that is the first of many.

Sadly, R/T Sales is the ONLY sponsor that has agreed to provide a prize. Hoping others will join in as participation increases. I have sent a request to my dealer (Fun On Wheels, Frederick MD) and Cowtown USA, Cuba MO. If anyone wants to contact their dealer, we are looking at prizes with a max value of approx $100. The number of prizes awarded will depend upon how many there are

I wonder if it would be helpful to limit submissions to once per week or something like that? I'm sure Irish will come up with a good system if this doesn't work for him.

Maybe you could start keeping track on Google Docs and have a handful of volunteers be able to tally the submissions.

+To save space (?) I'll start compiling my stuff into a single periodic post with the item number & points referenced therein.

Now, where was I before I so rudely fell asleep at the keyboard last night?.. Ahh, yes, looking east upon the Rondout Reservoir. While walking back to the bike after reading the kiosk history presentation, I noticed intermittent flakes of snow, but certainly nothing of concern.

(#14 +50) Westward ho! then, to the Chestnut Creek Covered Bridge in Grahamsville, NY:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9982.JPG
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9983.JPG

(#74 +100) A few more snowflakes continued to present themselves, but again, no big deal, and I was elated to also snag a totem pole in Grahamsville:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9984.JPG

(#23 +125) Next up, the Western Mohegan Tribe & Nation Reservation and Museum. Enroute, however, I got slammed with sleet, freezing rain and occasional snow squalls, and decided I'd head for home with only a few more stops intermingled in my travel. The Reservation:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9985.JPG

(#61 NO POINTS) As I progressed into the Rondout Valley in Ellenville, the weather changed to a simple misty rain, and I stopped at this D&H Canal snubbing post, thinking it'd qualify as a hitching post. (When I reviewed the list later, however, I noticed that it specifically said a "horse hitching post", so no points. Didn't make sense not to let you enjoy the pics though.) Text of the historic marker reads, "Snubbing Post, Delaware & Hudson Canal (1828-1898) opened valley to commerce. Ropes holding boats in lock cut grooves. Posts became O&W R.R. milestones. Moved from near Napanoch, 1960":
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9986.JPG
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9987.JPG

At this point, home was only 10 miles away up and over the highest point of the Shawangunk Range, and as I progressed upward, it became clear that altitude had enormous impact upon the precipitation. I didn't make it more than a mile when things got slick real quick. Leaving the village had me slipping the rear wheel endlessly, and at the first hill cut on the mountain, I had to turn around due to lack of forward progress. Now I was facing a 26 mile route that still included getting over the ridge 12 miles south of here, and as I proceeded, the snow simply got heavier. At Route 17, I was able to make the climb on the slushy interstate up and over, and then chose a local route that skirted the eastern edge of the ridge back north to my place.

(#49 NO POINTS) I already provided a one-room schoolhouse pic from earlier yesterday, and thought you might like to see the 1859 Walker Valley Schoolhouse. No points for the image, though, and check out the snowy road:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9988.JPG
I'm only 4 miles from home at this point, but I sincerely doubted I'd make it up my driveway, which is ~500' long with a 13% grade.

Sure enough, this wound up being the first night my bike did not get garaged, so I covered it up and kissed it goodnight, before venturing back out the next afternoon...:

I'm really enjoying seeing all the pictures posted on this thread and I want to complement everyone on the pics. Special complements to Roadkill for getting out in the snow and posting some really great pics. Also, I really like Roadkill's format. Hope to contribute a few of my own later this year after the Spyder gets here.

+Since I needed to retrieve the bike from "down below" (as our family refers to the egress of our driveway in the wintertime), and the driveway hadn't quite melted well enough due to limited sun (it faces west in the shadow of the Shawangunk Range), I aimed outbound and targeted some more images.

(#48 +25) The Walker Valley Fire Company revised its rooflines (previously flat) only a few weeks ago, and as I write this, its siren is blaring:

(#28 +15) My original ridge target couldn't be reached due to yesterday's weather, so I snagged it today. The Stone Church in Cragsmoor, NY. Not much for contest point value, but she sure is purty...:

1. any of various simple or complex tubelike devices containing combustibles that on being ignited liberate gases whose action propels the tube through the air: used for pyrotechnic effect, signaling, carrying a lifeline, hurling explosives at an enemy, putting a space vehicle into orbit, etc.

+After leaving the NYS Submariners War Memorial yesterday, I headed into the village of New Paltz.

(#22 +50) Image taken at the intersection of Huguenot and N. Front Streets in New Paltz, at the Huguenot Street National Historic Landmark Historic District. The historic marker lower left reads, "Die Pfalz, a French Huguenot village governed by 'the dusine', a body of 12 men chosen annually. For 100 years the only form of government." The plaque on the stone reads, "To the memory and in honor of (12 names) The New Paltz Patentees, who, driven by religious persecution from their native France, exiles for conscience' sake, came to America, after a sojourn in the Rhine Palatinate near Manheim, here established their homes on the banks of the Walkill, settled the country purchased from the Indians and granted by Patent issued by Governor Edmond Andros on the 29th day of September, 1677, and nobly bore their part in the creation of our free government. The Huguenot, Patriotic, Historical and Monumental Association of New Paltz erects this Monument, the 29th day of September, 1908." The plaque on the wall next to the door designates the "Jean Hasbrouck House... a registered national historic landmark possessing exceptional value in commemorating or illustrating the history of the United States". The historic marker on the right reads, "Jean Hasbrouck House built in 1712, by the patentee; now home of the Huguenot Patriotic, Historical and Monumental Society, Since 1899"

Keeping my eyes open helped snag the next three images enroute home.

Harrison, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Orange County and by Captain Robert B. Hock, President of the village of Goshen, September 5, 1907. Stand by the flag! Immortal heroes bore it through sulphurous smoke, deep moat, and armed defence: and their imperial shades still hover o'er it a guard celestial from omnipotence." Are we permitted ongoing multiple presentations of an item for cumulative points?

I wouldn't have expected it, but will start capturing more images if that's the case. Everyone expecting to participate, and those already doing so, need to understand this, as many will presume you can only credit an item once toward your cumulative total points.

Beautiful day in San Antonio, if you like 35mph winds...

Updates at:
http://docs.google.com/View?id=drj3v57_02njjzfj5

Only a few more today,

17. At an Unusual Building (Tower of the Americas, a 750-foot (229 m) observation tower in San Antonio, Texas. It was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair)
21. In Front of an Abandoned Hospital (Chambers Pavilion, formerly the Psych Ward of Brooke Army Medical Center, and now my Brigade Headquarters, hmmm)
28. At an Old Church (Mission San Francisco de Espada, In 1731, the mission transferred to the San Antonio River area. A friary was built in 1745, and the church was completed in 1756.)
30. At a Sign with 'Eagle' (The Lion & Eagle Antiques, probably the only lamp shade repair drive-in service in the world!)
33. In Front of a Large Statue (Making Hay by Tom Otterness, by the San Antonio River)
39. At a Dam (Admittedly not much of a dam, but the Espada Dam is still the original from the Spanish mission)
62. At a Rhyming Intersection (Ray Bon/Village Lawn. A serendipitous find; I understand why this one's worth so much now)
70. Mural that Creates an Illusion (A beautiful mural that adorns the back of a quick stop, it takes you right into a Mexican village scene.)
72. Airplane mounted on a Post (P-38 Lightning at Lackland AFB. There are dozens of airplanes on teeny jack stand looking mounts, but this was the only one actually elevated that I saw)
84. Sign with a Season (Summer Classics, 'nuff said)
95. Person Wearing Sports Paraphrenalia (After a 30 mile ride with a high wind return leg, I was lucky that my wife stood for my needing this photo...)

Another fun day, thanks Irish (still think that the Military Intelligence is a prime oxymoron example...)

+I enjoyed myself on the road for about five hours yesterday, bopping around the tri-state area looking for qualifying images. The temps once again dropped down below freezing as I progressed, though. With today's freezing drizzle, I'll wait for another day to continue scoping out shots.

(#45 NO POINTS) I started off at this bucolic site on Quannacut Road abutting the Dharma Drum Retreat, but the water isn't quite "falling".
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10026.JPG

Heading south afterwards, I checked out the eastern and western O&W railroad tunnels under the Shawangunk Range. Both are publically inaccessible, so I'll have to figure something else out for #58. Continuing south, I tried to reach the NY vista looking down upon the NY/NJ/PA Delaware River scene above the city of Port Jervis, but it's closed for the season. (What? The winter season doesn't still provide a view? Sheesh! 8^D)

(#13 NO POINTS) I stopped at this Delaware River beach in the city of Port Jervis, but I think you'll agree that I captured a nicer lake image to satisfy #13 a short while later, so no points are claimed for this image.

http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10027.JPG

(#52 +10) One cannot stop upon the I-84 bridge between PA & NY, so I captured these images east of the Delaware River border bridge looking back into Pennsylvania. "Pennsylvania Welcomes You" (across the span).

(#27 + 50) A short distance later, before exiting I-84 at exit 1, Port Jervis, Orange County, NY, I then captured, "Welcome to New York, The Empire State".
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10034.JPG

(#13 +25) Southbound once again brought me to this Steeny Kill Lake view of the High Point Monument (NJ's highest point at 1803' above sea level) from NJ State Route 23. The latter Lake Marcia view does so within High Point State Park. The High Point Monument presents a spectacular panorama of PA/NY/NJ, including the Delaware River separation of the states.

(#85 +25) On Coykendall Road, Sussex, NJ, I noticed this upside-down object, a street address sign.

(#68 +50) According to a sign on Nick Vander Groef's lawn, he makes windmills.

I doubt he made this one at the Holland American Bakery (since 1954) in my points image.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10037.JPG

As I progressed southward on Rt. 23, I recalled the Gingerbread Castle of my youth. Located on Gingerbread Castle Road, in Hamburg, NJ, it's not a genuine castle and, though it abuts an historic forge dating to 1768 & the abandoned Wheatsworth Mills, which also resembles a castle, it doesn't qualify, so no points for these images. 8^(

Due to traffic concerns I noticed when entering Gingerbread Castle Road from Rt. 23 (long line of cars due to uncourteous drivers as I entered the road), I decided to head south to its Route 94 connection, and in the course of travel spotted what might be a qualifying water tower in the distance!

(#63 +50) Water tower with cone top and ball.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10045.JPG

At this point, I headed north on Rt. 94 toward NY, knowing that the Appalachian Trail crosses somewhere nearby. But first, I capture this, at the Nordic House Coffee House & Nordic Bakery, north of Vernon Valley/Great Gorge ski areas.

(#96 +25) A national flag other than your native country.

http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10047.JPG

Before crossing the New York border again, I found the Appalachian Trail crossing, accomodating a barbed wire cow pasture fence via step structure, but I'll present it further down page again, as I've still got roads to travel...

(#40 REPLACEMENT IMAGE) I already snagged the 25 points for the Fair Oaks Drive In theater, but am replacing my earlier image with this one, of the Warwick Drive In, which captures all three screens. ("See U in the Spring")
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10048.JPG

(#54 +50) At Mount Peter, I finally found what I was looking for re the Appalachian Trail image: the universal hiking sign with an official placard. It's presented first, followed by my earlier A.T. images.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10049.JPG
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10050.JPG
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10051.JPG

Coming back down the mountain on the backroads, I noticed a checkerboard water tower upon the grounds of the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility, next to its newer replacement, but I'm not sure it's "unique", so I pass.

In Florida (NY), I spend half an hour trying to locate the "Birthplace of William Seward" sign, and finally continue on.

(#20 +35) In Chester, I capture The Castle Fun Center theme park from Rt. 17M, also incorporating my earlier image from Rt. 17/I-86 in the presentation.

http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10053.JPG
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10020.JPG

(#82 +50) Chester also happens to be the birthplace of Hambletonian. The sign on the side of the barn reads, "Willow Valley Farm Hambletonian Birthplace".
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10056.JPG
This historic marker reads, "Hambletonian. Foaled here May 5, 1849. Progenitor of America's Famed Trotters and Pacers. The Hambletonian Society.", and the stone marker reads, "Hambletonian 10. Father of the Trotting Horse. Foaled on this spot May 5, 1849. Erected by his admirers August 15, 1935."
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10054.JPG

Irish,

Maybe underthinking this, but there are actually two illusions in play here. The obvious one is the illusion of depth created by making it appear that there is a road (behind the walking couple) leading into a village in the middle distance. The second illusion is the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the center.

I acknowledge that the artist wasn't as talented as those you've cited, but he was shooting for at least the illusion of depth.

Thanks, Brevet

I was thinking Google Docs might be a good way to share the current info too.

At the risk of seeming presumptuous, and because I was asked, I have shared a blank version of my Google Docs spreadsheet to simplify Irish's task. It's freely available at Google Doc's Template Page. Simply search for 'Spyderlover'. Hope this helps!

Sorry...don't want to be a hardass but I can't accept it. Nice mural but there is no depth...everything is in 2 dimensions like a wall painting. Appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe s a representation but not an illusion

+I spent another 5 hours carousing today, sandwiching my (~10-1:30) 25,000 mile service visit. The temperature was 2*F when I started off at 8am, slide-riding the bike down the snowy driveway (I oughta' just start calling it "the slope") to reach the roadway 500' away, and wondering if I'd make it back up to the house later...
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10064.JPG

(92 NO POINTS) I figured there'd have to be a marquee 20 miles north in New Paltz with the word "new" in it, and after I photographed the New Paltz Animal Hospital, I thought twice about it, because the word "new" is actually on a sign hanging from the marquee, not worded upon the marquee itself. I probably could've found another somewhere in the village, but figured I could catch it another time.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10065.JPG

(92 +25) A few miles from the village, however, the New York State Police marquee presented itself. (Thankfully, the NYSP themselves didn't, although I might've snagged #15 if they had...) 8^D
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10066.JPG

Next, I stopped briefly at the new Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park to see if it had a vista sign, but no luck. The nearby park next to the Mid-Hudson Bridge had a vista of the Walkway Over the Hudson bridge, but no vista sign, only nice park data placards upon posts. I'll take pics some other time.

(34 +50) After crossing the Mid-Hudson Bridge, I headed north to Springwood, in Hyde Park. Springwood was the birthplace and home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and remains the only place in the United States where a President was born, maintained a lifelong connection, and lies buried. The site includes the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. For no extra points, today was his birthday (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945)...

(40 NO POINTS) As I was saddling back up to enter Springwood on FDR Drive, I then noticed the Hyde Park Drive-In Theater across the road.

http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10068.JPG

Enroute, I rode past Dutchess County Airport, but couldn't find a plane on a stick (#72) anywhere... 8^)

(69 NO POINTS) across I84 from Dutchess Stadium, I spot a red/white checkerboard water tower at the Beacon Correctional Facility. I'd seen a similarly-colored tower at the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility as relayed in an earlier report, though a different style. Red/White Checkerboard isn't quite unique, apparently, so I hope my earlier FDR tower meets muster.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10075.JPG

(67 +50) At this point, I'm on a quest to get as close as I can to Bannerman Castle, upon Pollepel Island, and in trying to get to the Hudson River for viewpoints, I find contradictory signs. Apparently, when it was decided to stop Dennings Avenue traffic at its intersection with Hudson Avenue, no-one bothered to remove the 15mph sign. While one can likely skid to a stop after seeing the stop sign, the 15mph thing might have them mid-street. I'm just saying. (I'm going to send them a letter.)

Just breakin' your stones Irish.:roflblack: I have agreed with your other interpretations.

But on a semi-serious note regarding taking pictures in someplace other than TX, I happen to be lucky as I live near the borders of TX. For others, such as our SA brethren or TX hill country folks, it is a 6 to 8 hour ryde to any border.:p Kinda makes it rough on us when we're competing against people that can make it through three or more states in the same time period.:joke: And for those of us out here in the wilds of west TX and the panhandle, one can travel 3 to 4 hours before one finds anything on your list other than an animal other than a pet and a county sign.:joke: Just messin' with ya....was just wondering if you are aware of the distances involved in this part of the country. Our NM brethren don't have it any easier.

I know, quit whinin' and post some pics right?:roflblack:

(35 NO POINTS) Bannerman Castle is inaccessible by vehicle, and falling to ruin except as best can be salvaged/maintained by interested historical parties in cooperation with New York State. Just this month, a large segment of outer wall collapsed. The Spyder scavenger requirement is for participants to be "at a castle", though, so I'm unsure if this qualifies, since RAKNID & I can't be any further "AT" Bannerman Castle than in these images. "Castle" websites have given me an alternative, however, so I turn around and head back north to I84, aiming for the Roe-Brewster House in New Windsor, back across the Hudson nearer home.

(02/04/10)

+I had a very enjoyable ride home yesterday afternoon.

(58 +50) Railroad tunnels can be tricky to capture on film without an illegal foot or vehicular trek. Let's face it, the tunnel will usually sharply pierce a hillside or mountainside, whereby the roadway will gradually ascend that brae from another direction, many times not even nearby, and the track property is always posted. Unless the roadway climbs next to the tracks at the tunnel, a photo may be difficult.

Take the Metro-North tunnel under the village of Otisville, in the town of Mount Hope, for example, which is the next railroad tunnel through the Shawangunk Range south of the defunct Bloomingburg/Wurtsboro tunnel I tried to reach a few reports back.

Yesterday, I asked co-worker Jimmy who lives near Otisville if the tunnel was accessible, and he said, "Sure! I rode my ATV through it once. Scared the ***** outta' me!" So I asked if he meant that it was "wheels" accessible, referring specifically to RAKNID, and he said yes. So, after work, I aimed for Otisville.

>The Otisville Tunnel is the longest tunnel on New York's Metro-North commuter railroad, at approximately 1 mile in length. It was sold to Metro-North by the Norfolk Southern Railway in 2003. It was built by the Erie Railroad and is part of the Erie Main Line. It operated under the auspices of Conrail until it was acquired by Norfolk Southern as part of the breakup of Conrail. Metro-North took over passenger service in 1984.< (Wikipedia)

I approached from the east and instead of following Route 211 under the rail line, I turned left on Kelly Hill Road and checked out the Otisville Station Parking Facility and rails. Though I can see the tunnel from the rail stop, it's quite a distance away, and I can't include RAKNID in the shot. No good, so I skirt the eastern portal's rails on Kelly Hill Road, and as I rise up the slope, the tracks disappear from street view well before the tunnel. Hmmmm.

Okay, onward to the western side. Leaving the village on 211, I turn right on Otisville Road and ride over the western portal, again finding no apparent access. I turned around and checked it out from the shoulder above - no access. Damn.

Resolved to try elsewhere at this point, I start heading home. Riding back east on 211 through the village, I pass a Mount Hope police car heading west, and then catch up to a Metro-North utility pickup heading east. Who better to ask if there's an accessible view? So, I follow it a short distance and it pulls in to the station lot. When it stops, I explain my need and chat up the driver to see if there's an accessible view. "Not on that", he tells me, pointing to RAKNID, "but take a look to see if the gate's open", and he points me to the far side of the station lot. "If it is, you can get in/get out", inferring I should be quick about it. I ride to the west end of the lot, and the gate's open...

Through it I ride onto the railbed, and^ bumpity^bump^ the^ stones^ toward^ the^ portal^, where I capture this:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10090.JPG

Picture captured, I^ bumpity^bump^ the^ stones^ back^ to^ the^ station lot, and as I progress through the gate into the lot, a police car lights me up...

(16 +100)(aka 001843) Uh-oh. As I stop, I hop off and head to his window, but he motions me quickly back to the bike. I walk back and wait, and when he approaches, I explain what I was doing on the railbed, and that I had their (pointing to the rail guys) permission. He confirms that I just stated I'd been permitted to be there, and then lets me ride off. As I'm never hesitant to thank a cop for letting me be on my way, off I go.

I banged a left on 211 and as I went under the rails I reminded myself that law enforcement pics are part of this hunt, and as I look back toward the tracks, I see that the cop is now with the rail guys, so I turn around and head back. As I approach, I hear one of the rail guys say, "What? Is a cop image required?" I laughed confirmation as I walked toward them, and started regaling them with the other items on the list. "A rainbow!", one exclaims, "You could've gotten that yesterday!" These guys were very helpful to my needs yesterday:

+It's getting tougher to find unpointed items in my chilly forays through the countryside, but try I do. I'm going to enjoy watching everyone else clamber for their images when the warmer weather arrives.

These pics are from yesterday's hours-long ride, (before the game, of course...). Thankfully, I'm located just north of the snow, but it got downright nasty chilly before I got home due to the sub-freezing winds. It was 18*F when I started out...

+To aid in locating the southernmost point in my state (New York), I turned to Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_points_of_U.S._states

It took 6-1/2 hours of saddle time to capture today's images, partially due to stop/go traffic through most of the boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, two hours south of my home in Ulster County. My first stop was in Staten Island, after crossing over from New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing...

(#25 +125) Conference House Park sits at the southern tip of Staten Island, Richmond County (New York City). Though my image includes only the park's Visitor Center, the Conference House itself, now a museum, was built by a British Naval Officer in 1680, and is named in memory of the 1776 conference convened at the house in an attempt to end the Revolutionary War.
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10120.JPG

Next up was a town that's the same name as a country, and for this, I chose Jamaica, Queens (still in New York City) a scant 40 miles away (this is a BIG city), and nearly ALL bumper-to-bumper, stop & go traffic. After leaving Staten Island via the Verrazano Bridge, and traversing through Brooklyn on the Belt Parkway, an official NYC sign read, "Leaving Brooklyn. FUHGETTABOUTIT". I was unable to stop and photograph it without getting run over...

(#1 +50) In Queens, upon exiting the Van Wyck Expressway at Jamaica Avenue, I looked for a landmark satisfactory to my needs, and settled on the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

(#5 +50) In front of a rocket: (Gemini Titan II, Mercury-Atlas D Rocket, Saturn V F-1 Engine)
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10122.JPG

From here, I'm bound west toward the East River and Long Island City, Queens, where I'm looking for 5 Pointz...

(#12 +50) 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc. is an outdoor art exhibit space in Long Island City, New York, considered to be the world’s premiere “graffiti Mecca,” where aerosol artists from around the globe paint colorful pieces on the walls of a 200,000-square-foot factory building.

Okay, that'll work. Hey Irish, what is the total points please? My spreadsheet adds up to 5530 and Verb's doc has 5440 and one of your posts states 5580. Lots of different numbers here. I also added by hand and come up with 5530. I used your original list. I wonder if I have one column with a number off by 50. Just checking. Want to fix it if I have made an error in the points column. Thanks.

I have changed a few of the point values since we started but, to add further confusion, my spreadsheet adds up to 5475. I tried to attach it but xls files aren't allowed

Lamont...any way you can add xls files to the list of legal attachments?

So I guess I need to know what we changed, so that I can fix it in my google document. Or just add a new word doc and I will print it out and make the changes from that. Thanks

+I'm glad you posted the file, Irish.

I captured #35 (+50) on January 30th:
... The 1870 Roe-Brewster Castle, overlooking the Hudson River in New Windsor, NY. (23 rooms, 8 baths. Chestnut stairwell and foyer open into large parlors with 12 foot ceilings, parquet floors, elaborate moldings and fireplaces. Decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose fixtures remain, including stained-glass central skylight. Charming stone cottage...)
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_10083.JPG

I captured #74 (+100) on January 17th:
... A few more snowflakes continued to present themselves, but again, no big deal, and I was elated to also snag a totem pole in Grahamsville:
http://www.roadkillonline.net/imagedb_images/35_9984.JPG

I have NOT yet captured #66.

All of my material can be found in the "spyder scavenger hunt" image album at Roadkill Online http://www.roadkillonline.net

Following those changes, I calculate a points total of 3685.

So does that mean these have already been used? Also, I know it is your contest and your rules but that township in Ontario is not a word, it is many words. Don't see how that can count. It seems like it should be one word, not hyphenated, or commas or spaces. That first one, the name of the lake, that one is probably a winner though.

Think these are examples of place names from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_word

Since I just happened to be in the vicinity of Washington-on-the-Brazos (cited in the Wikipedia article, by the way) I thought I'd better snag it after Irish used the hyphenated example of Thai name for Bangkok: Krung-thep-maha-nakorn-boworn-ratana-kosin-mahintar-ayudhya-amaha-dilok-pop-nopa-ratana-rajthani-burirom-udom-rajniwes-mahasat-arn-amorn-pimarn-avatar-satit-sakattiya-visanukam; it has the Guinness World record for longest place name in the world.
