View Full Version : Can the bulb socket be replaced in tail light assembly RT models?

My 622 trailer has the same tail light assembly as my '17 RTL and the R indicator socket has lost its spring tension when holding the bulb, resulting in it not working from time to time.

Is it possible to replace the socket without having to replace half of the trailer :) ? I imagine the cost of a replacement tail light assembly is similar to that of buying a small island in the tropics :(

I'm guessing that the bulb is a 1157 or something like that :dontknow: If it is you can get one of these to fix it. https://www.autozone.com/electrical-and-lighting/double-contact-lamp-connector/p/dorman-conduct-tite-universal-double-contact-light-bulb-socket/600502_0_0?cmpid=LIA:US:EN:AD:NL:1000000:ELC:19486 091402&&CATARGETID=120054150001289080&CADevice=c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsIejBhDOARIsANYqkD1VfpTyP7ZkAk5RBXfl-kI3Ap0H6DiWRU9diBnHqdWAxk9Eps9QKyQaApTAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds any auto parts store can help you. If nothing else buy the kit and use the spring with your connectors.

askitee -- I assume your problem is bulb-to-socket tension not socket-to-fixture tension.

Disconnect trailer from Spyder, then remove socket from fixture and bulb from socket. Deep in the center of the socket you will see a nickel-plated tongue. Using a small screwdriver, carefully pry the tongue upwards about 15 degrees. Test the bulb tension. If still a bit loose, pry up another 15 degrees. Be careful -- you do not want to break that tongue off.

Because I never was able to find an aftermarket socket.

Curious if carefully adding solder to base of bulb would work. Unfortunately would also have to be done to any additional replacements , but just a redneck thought. (Solder would be soft & subject to vibration probably would not last long)

If it is indeed an 1157 bulb, just Google "socket for 1157 bulb". They are commonly available.
