Go Cats. Geelong (the Cats) won the Australian Football League (AFL) premiership today.
Some interesting stats:
Australia has a population of approx 20 mill. At the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) today, 100,000 people watched the final live. That made the MCG Australia’s 12th biggest city for the day.
Geelong is about 45 mile from Melbourne (popn ~ 3.5 mill and capital of Victoria) and has a population of ~ 160,000. It’s the only provincial team of 16 in the country’s major sport. All other cities fielding teams range from 1 to 4 million.
About 47-49% of the audience at major AFL games are female. Same percentage for club membership. Supposed to be the largest female audience of any male, male dominated, or mixed sport in the world.
Geelong’s major sponsor is Ford and is the oldest and longest sponsorship in the world. Ford Australia was initially established in Geelong and is still has major manufacturing there. And Geelong’s colours are Blue and White. A match made in heaven.
