Looking at assembling my own dog trailer

I found a site that will allow me to buy individual parts and make my own dog trailer with ample room for carrying additional luggage.

The trailer I am considering is a folding utility trailer sold by Sport Utility Trailers (http://www.sportutilitytrailers.com/LongChih/749TC.htm) for $459 plus S&H. Just a basic flat bed with a 3/4" plywood floor. To this I want to add a $486 + S&H BB-1 fiberglass box sold by Fiber-Pro (http://www.fiber-pro.com/page2.html) to which I will add a cooling fan and connect a fiberglass ice chest


Hand laid fiberglass construction with 3 layers of fiberglass
Rubber gasketing around door parameters for air-tight seals
Rubber boots secured to bottom to prevent slipping in vehicles
Full length plated hinges and heavy-duty plated handles
Storage compartments, custom colors and camouflage available
7" vents


I would still have a lot of bed space to carry bags

Looks like I could do the whole job for less than $1500

Watch total weights very carefully! The recommended maximum trailer weight for a Spyder RT is 400 pounds. Same should apply to the GS/RS model. That weight is fully loaded......Trailer frame, box, cooler, ice, dogs, and luggage. Check the weight carefully to make sure it will be light enough, when full loaded. Many of these do-it-yourself units are quite heavy.

That may be an even better choice though I like the folding option of the one I was looking at. But it's only 138 lbs (and $300) and can't imagine the fiberglass crate would be more than 100 lbs (I'll call to find out). That would give me 160 lbs to play with. Plywood deck will add another 25 and Dog weighs 70. Since size was not the issue, I think I'll go that route.

Can't wait to see how it turns out, I still would like to take my dog by spyder. She weighs about 60lbs but funds are kind of tight right now.

Intently watching this thread and the K-9 trailer one. Hvae a 35 lb dog we would love to be able to take with us. Been looking at passenger seating options without much luck.
I have a Bob bicycle trailer that may do the trick with an axle upgrade and figuring out how to hitch it to the spyder or gs.

I bought a PiggyBacker trailer for the same reason only to find that the Corbin Saddlebags work well for my 33# dog. The PiggyBacker is a great trailer and is sturdy while not being too heavy. The one I bought is made for a dog and has a hole cut into the top with a rubber gasket around the hole. I bought it and assembled it but have never used it and has yet to be out of the garage. You will need a trailer hitch, which I don't have, but I would like to sell it if you are interested. The following is the PiggyBacker website so that you can see what it looks like. Only when she's bad;)...I had a D-ring put in the bottom of the left-hand bag and have a short leash to keep her from jumping out and then cut the bolts back on the top, drilled a hole through them and made it a 'quick disconnect' with some cotter pins. When she doesn't ride I re-connect the top and off I go! My pup is a 33# cocker who loves to ride. She's black and has red 'doggles' and loves the attention she gets on the bike. She actually gets angry when I take the bike out and she isn't with me.:joke:

That is great, you should post some pictures. My dog would love to go everywhere I go but she is to big for a saddle bag or the trunk or anything like that. I am going to have to get innovative.
