Russell Daylong vs Laam

Hi Guys and Gals,

After a few miles/km on my new ‘21 RT, I am finding a little “nether region” discomfort (which I thought I probably would). I am going to have to go with either a Daylong (I have had 5), or a Seth Laam, to give me say an extra inch back and an extra inch up to give me a bit more legroom.

I have never used Seth Laam seats, and his website is fairly sparse. Is anyone able to answer the following, please? -

Do you have to send Laam an old seat for him to remodel, or does he have his own seat pans?
(I ask this as the cost of sourcing a seat and getting it to Russell is significant)
Is his pricing comparable to Daylong?
Are those of you who are “longer” than average (I.e. well over 6’) happy with the Laam seat?
For those who have tried both Daylong and Laam, are they “fairly” similar?

I would vote for Russell. I'm on number 12. Seth uses foam instead of the spring like Russell. Russell makes the foam in house so they control the density to suit your needs. I know a number of folks with Laam seats and most are OK with the seat but say after build service is lacking. I called Russell today to get an idea of how far out they are cause I'm looking for another bike.

I have a LAAM seat. I would say they are very similar. I believe Seth came from Day long. Don't shoot the messenger if that's wrong. You have to send him your seat, or acquire one to send. I also believe LAAM is less $$. His workmanship is superb and I wouldn't hesitate to use him again. :thumbup: Tom :spyder:

I have the Laam seat on my 18 F3L and really like it. Very comfortable. I'm 5'9" 230 pounds. I had a Russell on my 15 RTS. Also very comfortable. My Laam was 505.00 shipped back to me. Plus cost of me shipping it there. My Russell came to about 900.00 shipped to me but had both rider and passenger seat custom build. My F3L just the rider seat was built and recovered the passenger seat to match. Maybe you could find someone in California that has a seat you could by cheap and they send it to the builder.

Can never understand why summer is the busy season for seat renovation? That's what Nov-Mar is for :)

You would think so. But I guess it's most people's butts are not hurting in Nov-Mar so they dont get it done then. I try to do all my seats during winter riding break.

Yea, me too. I try and limit myself now and avoid riding below 45/50 degrees. I've ridden in 30 degrees before but that was many years ago in my younger stupider days. Ever been down on the black ice? And, riding at freeway speeds does not make 110/112 degrees any cooler.

I have both, and Ann has had both, too. Quality is the same, but Laam charges far less. He is a one man show, and works from his own shop. Less overhead, better prices. My next one will be a Laam.

Thanks fjray……after build service won’t be an issue as there is no way I will be shipping it back after it arrives….. but Daylong DID meet half the cost of shipping when the original they sent wasn’t comfortable for me, so they have the advantage there;)

Thanks Tom…..yes, I also read somewhere that Seth came from Daylong. I have actually sent an email to Laam asking if they are able to source a cheap seat/pan to use, but am still awaiting a reply. If I have to source a 2nd hand seat in the US to send to either Laam or Daylong, I may as well stick with Daylong as I know their solution works first time for me (except for once). I’ll wait to see if Laam replies to my email. It was quite a few days ago.

Thanks JP…..yeah, I have had to source a seat in the US for my previous Daylongs and it looks like I’ll have to do the same for Laam. I’ll get some prong for Laam to compare :thumbup:

Thanks everyone. This feedback is invaluable. You can’t beat first hand experiences.

p.s. I just pumped an old Airhawk up to max, and it lifted me about 1.5”……and the seating/legroom feels much better. I may only need the seat heightened (with outer thigh support as well though)

I've been to both shops. Both are reputable seat makers. Laam is less expensive however Russell had many more options to choose from.

Thanks 2dogs……Yeah, I know Russell works well for me. Probably the only thing that would have moved me to Laam would be if they had their own seat pans, or were able to source cheap seats direct. With the overall cost to buy a 2nd hand seat, get it modified, and then ship it out here, I am looking at around $3k Aussie, all up. Saving a couple of hundred $ with the added question of “will Laam work for me”, really isn’t worth entertaining. Plus, I still haven’t heard anything back from Laam since my email a week ago. I know it’s the busy season, but Daylong usually reply within a day…….just doesn’t give me a warm feeling.

I have tried them in the past, JP, with no success. There just isn’t the market for them to specialise like Russell or Laam……..and with their limited experience and access to good raw materials, the solution is questionable ;)

Do a search for motorcycle salvage business, and look for a damaged spyder. May find an affordable seat pan. You could just have it sent to Laam or Russell.
