From the get-go 18 months ago ,I have been running nothing but 87octane in my unit.Well I thought I would try upping the octane a notch to 89 @ .10cents more per gal.
Yep...worth the dime difference. My unit ran strong from day one and strong after the update.I have Ken's performance air filter and Hindle pipe....no update problem.....but the 89 octane has taken performance up another notch!I know a lot of folks have been concerned about rumble and popping of exhaust on deceleration(throttle off) but this is pretty normal for big twin motors with free flow exhaust.Had it on my S&S motors, Harley,Buell,Rotax. It should not be present during throttle roll on but you will get some on throttle roll-off.Anyway the 89 looks like a keeper in my tank!!:2thumbs:

It's interesting how many different takes we get on octane. I've tried all three and didn't see any differences...I have the JB, green filter, and the hindle...

I guess if it works for you, that's all that matters...I'll try again now that the update is done...curious...

Just ran 2 tanks of 93 octane-- can't say I noticed any difference. Back on 87 right now.

I'm going to run 93 on my way down to gatlinburg and while there--- and then 87 on the way home and compare MPG and power/sputter/etc...

. . . . I went up a grade today.
Was not having any problems before (stock updated 05 SE5). I have been running 88 oct. (91 and 86 are the other two grades, all have 10% ethanol)

Filled up (two bars and no light on - to all bars dark) and went 80 miles on the express way, mostly 80 mph with a range of 75 to 90.
I didn't notice anything different.

When I got off the express way, I smelled gas, not bad, but not usual. There was a smell of gas, again, not bad - just that I have not smelled gas for months - when I put it away.

So far, the only change I have experienced is the gas smell. Curious about mileage, but it will be a day or so before I fill-up again. (I got 37 off the last tank)

Unless you have a way of accurately calibrating how full you get the tank -- and I don't think that can be done -- any one-tank readings you get are suspect.

With the variability in filling the tank as it is, the only way to get an accurate mileage is to use 3 or more fillups to average out the error from the inaccuracy of filling the tank.

I try my durnedest to be consistent when filling the tank. My mileages are all over the place (31.7 to 36.1 recently) for any one tank -- and I drive fairly consistently and always use regular gas (87 around these parts).
