Simple question, sorry confused by oil threads

Fellas i have a 2015 f3s with 13k miles. My (new to me) first oil change, will use oem oil filter, but the oil viscousities are all over the place, 5-40, 10-40,20-50, etc. I like the castrol 4t bike oil full synthetic and plan to change at 4500 miles (just oil) and again at 9k with filters. Can you give me some help on viscouties, and if I am going the wrong way. Thanks Tim I live in Oregon and ride only in summer.

The oil that BRP uses is a 5-40w. You can also use a 10-40w, but stay away from 20-50w. I use Rotella T-6 in my F3 and it is rated a 5-40w. The most important thing is that the oil is rated for use in wet clutches.

:agree: you can use the heavier viscosity if you are in a warmer climate but stick with the recommended whenever possible. If you do go heavier start out slower and let the oil circulate or warm up a bit more...:thumbup:

Why don't you save some money and time down the road by changing the oil and filter and use the Castrol 4T 5W-40 full synthetic oil, API service code SL as required by your operator's guide, and run it the full 9,300 miles until your next oil change is due. Save the money on the extra oil change and have the Castrol analyzed at 9,300 miles. The engine and oil will run fine for the full 9,300 miles.

READ YOUR OPERATOR'S GUIDE VERY CAREFULLY AND DO NOT OVERFILL! When you have allowed the oil to fully drain, reinstall the plugs and filter and install 5.0 qt of oil which will bring the level to the Min level on the dip stick. Note that the OG says, pg 97, if the oil is between the Min and Max marks, DO NOT add oil. If you absolutely must do so, DO NOT add more than two oz at a time and check the level again per the OG each time you add more oil. The engine can run the full 9,300 on 5 qt of oil with no problems.

Hi Tim1, I would recommend changing the oil filter with every oil change. Not much more cost with peace of mind. cueman

Thanks fellas, i was concerned 9k miles on any oil was too much, never used synthetic oil though, but I am old school with 3k oil changes. Good point on the filter change each time. Tim

I purchased Rotella T6 5-40w full synthetic that meets BRP requirements plus with their rebate it come to $3.85 a quart and I purchase oil filter kits from Ron that are just under $8, and comes with all the O-rings and sealing washers.
Not only do I save over $50 an oil change, but I get better oil than what is in the BRP kit.

On my 2014 RT I sent oil samples in for testing. I was changing oil every 5000 miles and all the test results came back recommending I go further than 5000. The last one I sent in was at 9600 miles due to our Alaska trip. That one stated that I could add another 1000 miles (10,600) and have it tested.
I decided to just change oil and filter every 9,000 miles.
Never had an oil related issue with it and we traded in the RT with 84,000 miles.

I am doing the same for our F3's (after the first 3000 mile service)

Tim, when the 1330 ACE engine came out there was much ado about engine lubrication, how to check, how long to go between changes, viscosity shearer down, correct engine capacity, etc., largely the result of very poor technical editing and proofreading of the 2014 RT operator's guide by BRP. Many of us changed at more frequent intervals, tried different oils, etc. Once it all got straightened out many of us went to the manufacturer's change interval of 9,300 miles and never looked back. The 1330 ACE engine is a very reliable one that easily goes the mfgr recommended interval with no sweat. The engine DOES NOT use ANY oil; if you see the dipstick level drop between oil changes you either aren't checking it properly or it has a leak.

It is semi synthetic ,but as Shawn said it is 80 %.In my sled i only use BRP oil ,is it the best i do not know .( it is a 850 2 stroke )
