I'll try, American slang.
Another definition of taste is having a preference for something usually with your own personal standards as a guide. Taste with your mouth or you only have taste in your mouth usually means something like they have no ability to recognize something good, classy or valuable in some way (painting over stainless steel).

Most likely they painted it because many Delorean owners don't like the stainless finish. The stainless looks cool but is very high maintenance. Like your refrigerator, the stainless finish on a Delorean shows every fingerprint. This is why refrigerator makers now offer a finish that looks like stainless, but isn't. If you could get that same finish on a Delorean, people wouldn't paint them. And maybe the owner just preferred red.
