View Full Version : Do you use motorcycle parking spaces?

When you are out on a ride and want to stop at the store, mall, or where ever, do you use the M/C parking spaces?

or regular car parking spaces?

I use the car parking spaces, so far.

It depends on how many there are, how much closer I can park if I use one and where they are. For instance I won’t use them at a Harley dealer.

It really depends (to me anyway) on how close they are to where I'm going, but more importantly, is the Mtc. space large enough for the Spyder ….. most I've seen aren't ……. Mike :ohyea:

Some of us still ride motorcycles ( Yamaha V-Max ) and I park front wheel out in motorcycle parking spaces ( if they are there for us ). On the :spyder2: ---- I always use an auto space ( nose out for a quick get away).

Usually I park in the car spaces, and especially when ryding with our group of 4 Spyders, we try to overlap by parking two Spyders to a car space. Usually two pull in and the last two back in to overlap rear wheels and save space.... and it seems to lessen the amount of Looky Loos climbing around them;)

Mostly car spaces and we also double up on the parking when we are out riding.

Depends on circumstances. The Spyder is a motorcyle, so I can park in motorcycle spaces, but most places don't have dedicated motorcycle spaces so it it usually in the car spaces. The RTL has handicap plates as Gloria has bad knees and trouble from a former car wreck, so if she is along we park in the wheelchair zone.

As opposed to SpyderAnn01, I find a small amount of perverse pleasure parking the Spyder, our Goldwing 1800 trike or my Triumph Bonneville right by the front door, where the motorcycle spaces generally are, at the Harley dealer when I am getting parts for my FLHS.

I live in Las Vegas. I will use car spaces normally, except when I go to a covered parking garage like at a hotel/casino and it has dedicated motorcycle parking in the garage. Then I will put the Spyder in the motorcycle parking area, primarily because that area will (normally) have surveillance cameras monitoring it. The casinos aren't stupid (I used to deal at them after I retired from the Air Force). If a customer rolls up on a Gold Wing, Harley, or equivalent $40K-ish Trike, that customer has money and wants their bike watched by security while they are in the casino or staying at the hotel. And seeing as most Valet Parking will not take a motorcycle (insurance reasons primarily), many (most) casinos will provide supervised (camera surveillance) motorcycle parking for you to use in the parking garages.

Or you can do it like the Harley riders do:
Park right beside the front door.......on the sidewalk.......beside the bicycle rack if there is one.

Very few M/C stalls in our area, so car stalls it is. I would use a car stall anyway due to the width of the Spyder

Unless Im parking at a MC dealer, I never see dedicated MC parking. I go to my local Home Depot and half the parking lot is for disabled, veterans, internet shoppers, emplyee of the month, contractors, or just taken up by rentals or inventory.

I pull up in among the big steel posts at the end of the rows where they got it marked off no parking. I try to get in behind the posts enough a car has to hit the post before they hit me. They don't have any motorcycle only parking marked off anywhere around here except the VA Hospital and those usually have some ______ ________ car in them.

I only park in car spaces unless the motorcycle parking is just a generic, large parking area. If the motorcycle parking is striped for individual bikes then no, I won’t park my Spyder there since I would end up using 2-3 individual motorcycle spots.

I park where spaces are available. If there is a MC designated area, that's what I use. Some MCs/scooters are skinny and some are wide. As far as I'm concerned MC designated parking areas are there for anything licensed accordingly..... just like handicap areas. I've never heard of any store towing or ticketing any vehicle because part of the vehicle was not within the lines they painted on the ground. Another consideration is the designated areas for motorcycles, bicycles, handicap, etc. are there not only for the convenience of the users, but also to maximize use of the parking lot. If there's scooter/MC parking available, that's where they want them to be parked, instead of a larger auto spot. Finding a lone little scooter/MC in the middle of a larger parking spot in a crowded lot is not a welcoming sight.

We park in the "cage" parking spots all the time, but take advantage of the "motorcycle" status when riding a ferry (Western WA)... First on, first off is kinda nice! And yes, we now qualify for senior discount making the ride a bit nicer.

I park in car slots mostly. When I am out with my club I park where the group parks. Generally we park in the outlying spots and share spots making room for other vehicles.

At motorcycle dealers I park in designated MC spots if they are wide enough. If there is limited space on "kickstand down" concrete spots I will use a car spot.

vito1943

I've never seen a motorcycle specific parking space that would accomodate a Spyder. And taking two spaces is just not acceptable. It has never even occurred to me to try. When parking I consider the Spyder a car and take a full space. BTW, in many jurisdictions if two motorcycles park in one metered space, they will be ticketed.

Around here most MC only spots are to narrow to comfortably park my RT. Also a lot of the MC spots are concrete rather than blacktop to prevent the sidestand from sinking in hot pavement. Spyder doesn't have that issue. Then there is always the argument that these contraptions are not motorcycles.

Hiding your Spyder in amongst cars can lead to lookie loo’s playing with or doing damage to your ride. MC parking is more visible and helps prevent people from doing anything to the bikes. I don’t care how many bike spaces I use, I’ll park where it’s safer.

Downtown there are 5 or 6 mc parking areas and I use them if room enough.
One day there was a "metermaid" looking at me backing my RT into a park and she told me to park with the cars, because I took too much space.
I just showed her my registration card that said, "motorcycle with three wheels" and asked if she would dispute the DMV department! She told me to have a nice day and walked away!
I have also parked in car spots at the mall, but between two big cars like SUV's the Spyder might come as a surprise to people thinking "there is an empty spot" and almost hit you as they turn in.

As in life, I think the answer is it depends. I typically see regular trikes parked in mcy areas so I'm not here or there on the subject. If we are at an attraction that offers a decent size mcy area, I park there. If not, or at a grocery store, mall, etc will usually park in the main area.

I totally agree with Jesster. Some places we frequent have a designated area for bikes so we park there, if enough room. I normally use a little common sense and park where its best for me and other riders. When we ride as a group the group we ride with includes Can-Am, Goldwing, and Harly trikes and this issue has never been a problem for us.

I don't park in handicapped spaces unless I am handicapped. I don't take up two or more motorcycle only spaces with my Spyder either. Those spaces are clearly intended for narrower, two wheeled vehicles, not for the Spyder which has a car sized footprint.

If there is a general area designated for motorcycles, often closer to the special event location than the parking area is for cars, and where parking is open and not designated by lines for narrow spots, then I would not hesitate to park my Spyder there.

FWIW, I love riding my RT and yes I understand that it is registered as a motorcycle and in my state a motorcycle endoresement is required on my driver's license. But we all really know that the Spyder/Ryker is not really a motorcycle as most think of what that word means. Learn to ride a two wheeler with a standard transmission and then consider yourself a motorcyclist, and continue to do so even when you happen to be riding a three wheeler.

I'm picking up my Spyder in a couple of days and as a first time owner, wondering if I should bother parking in m/c spaces or just find a car spot. Do other bikers complain because these vehicles take up so much space?

If I'm riding my Spyder, I usually avoid parking in MC designated places, because

1) I don't consider my Spyder a motorcycle, in the traditional sense of the word, and

2) When I ride my Harley 2-wheeler and attempt to pull into a MC designated spot only to be blocked by a big-ass Spyder, I get a bit annoyed. I wouldn't want to be an annoyance to other 2-wheelers who deserve their spot.

My opinion.
