other brands of oil

now that the local spyder dealer does not sell spyders no longer ......... :cus: was wondering where to buy oil for spyder??? :dontknow: instead of driving 90mi where i purchased spyder from as i always trusted dealer in giving me the correct type from can-am. so any replys as to the best types from places like other bike dealers or local auto parts ...please be specific after looking at many different brands some had most of recommend specs in owners manuel but none were exact. as you know want to keep warranty valid.. :gaah:

When I had my Spyder worked on at Indy Cycle and Ski in Indianapolis IN we discussed various synthetic oils. They only use Spectro (http://www.spectro-oils.com/). I will be switching to Platinum on my next change. Costs $11.95 a liter at The Superbike Toy Store (http://www.superbiketoystore.com/sport/products/fluids-lubricants/spectro-platinum-full-synthetic-4stroke-motorcycle-oil/)

It seems like the dealers all have their own opinion on which oil to use. My dealer swears by Amsoil 10W40 full synthetic.

I was thinking about the Amsoil Motorcycle 10-40. I think it comes out to 8.75 a quart x four quarts. The BRP stuff is 11 something a quart.

I personally use Amsoil... and have for the last 5-6 bikes. Good stuff.

I believe I am going to go with the Rotella T 10-40 Full Sythetic oil bought at Wal-Mart, I have ran this in my conventional bike for years now and have always had good luck with it... Now as for oil I don't think that is as much concern to me anyway as type of oil filter.. What type and oil filter are you guys running and whats the number on the filter? I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Rotella but I'm more concerned with the filter.. Comments Please??

Check to make sure it's not labeled "Energy Saving (or Conserving)" and is rated SL or less. There was a recent change (last six months or so) ... so I've heard... that the older non-"Energy Saving" stuff is no longer made. Whichever the jug color (white or blue) that you probably used before was changed.

You may... or may not... find the older stuff still on the shelves.

Filter? I'm not sure we have a choice right now. This is not a spin-on filter.

I was under the impression that the primary, and the engine use the same lube which the clutch plates are bathed in as well. So will that not effect which lubes you are using.

Yes it will. Oils that say "Energy Saving" or oils that exceed API SL specifications contain friction modifiers that will cause the clutch to slip. Improper viscosities or the use of pure petroleum oils may make the clutch drag. Unfortunately, BRP has seen fit to change the oils they use in the Spyder without changing their spec or issuing a service bulletin, so we are all left a bit in the dark, with exceedingly few oils available that meet their "5W-40 full synthetic" specification. Most folks have had to punt a bit, within the "API rating SL, for motorcycles" part of the spec.

I have a thread with an actual photo of what BRP is using and recommends...all dealerships are supposed to be using it...no exceptions...

You might have to search for the thread a little but it's from around May 30th when I met a regional rep. and was discussing when my dealership had a Spyder get-together....

Engine oil is a major factor in the performance and service life of the engine. Always use the proper grade of oil for the lowest temperature expected before the next scheduled oil change. Your authorized dealer has the proper oil to suit your requirements.
Refer to Recommended Engine Oils (https://www.buell.com/om/99480-08Y_en/file-6.asp#table-hdtopic007160-1). Buell recommends using Screamin' Eagle® SYN3 Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant when adding or changing oil. If SYN3 is not available and addition of motor oil is required, H-D 360 SAE 20W50 may be used. Although H-D 360 is compatible with SYN3, we suggest the mixture of the fluids be changed as soon as possible.
If SYN3 or H-D 360 are not available, the final option would be to add a synthetic 15W-50 oil that meets SG and JASO MA specifications. We again suggest the mixture of the fluids be changed as soon as possible. At the first opportunity, see an authorized dealer to change back to 100 percent Harley-Davidson oil.

my dealer here in australia told me, that they did not have any brp oil in stock.they ware told by brp to use CASTROL 1 GPS oil. i belief brp oil is made by castrol.the oil is part synthetic based and rated 10w-40 what is not as brp spec.

Switched to the Royal Purple Max-Cycle - but with my open intake setup, the smell has become too much for me to tolerate. RP tech support told me it was their special additive (can't recall the name) burning off and seating into the engine - 1,200 miles later it's still smelling on startup and full throttle.

So I'm going to switch to something else - just not sure what yet.

I was at a dealer in Plymouth Michigan last weekend and they had the 'old' BRP XPS synthetic on the shelf - guess I should have bought some.

No big shock that the Buell people call for using HD oil (which obviously isn't made by HD).

I refuse to use the 'blends' that BRP now recommends using - that is just silly.

So I'm now thinking Spectro, Mobil 1, Redline, ?????

If I can't find some Castrol 5W-40 synthetic, I will probably switch to 10W-40 Amsoil, which is available locally. I'd prefer to use the BMW synthetic, since I already keep it around, but that viscosity is even higher.

My dealer sold me Repsol Moto 4T Sintetico Synthetic Oil - 10W40. He said thats what they use. Just another option. :thumbup:
