Okay, after a long thread:

http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11571

about this:

http://www.rtsales.org/catalog_product_det...;product=715288 (http://www.rtsales.org/catalog_product_det...;product=715288)

a 3" riser from RT Sales, I've committed myself to designing a fix for the loss of steering lock due to the rise in the keylock assembly. RT Sales has suggested that they would supply this to present owners of their riser and for the new sales of the risers.

I have but one problem in my design effort: Before instaling the riser, I always turned the bars over to the left limit prior to locking (used to that from bikes). I can't test now, because I have the riser installed. BUT in the center of the metal tongue that is used for the locking pin there is a hole that MIGHT be usable to lock the bars in the center position.

My question is:

Will the Spyder lock the handlerbars in the centered position, or do the bars have to be at the left or right extreme limit? This will affect how I design the fix for this particular riser. I'd test it myself, but I don't feel like removing the mod just for this simple test.

Your help is appreciated.

IMO, left extreme limit.

The idea of motorcycle steering locks is that the vehicle can still be moved, but only in a circle. This makes loading it on a trailer difficult, or even pushing it down the block. The abilty to lock to either side allows you to make it harder still, by pointing it at a curb or another object. Sorry, but I feel the locks must be at the steering stops - both sides, just as on the stock Spyder.

I spoke with Ron at R/T and he said he'd have a fix within a few days (with production, maybe a bit longer)...

I use the lock for parking on hilly roads...wouldn't want to park without it as the emergency brake is not 100%...the lock would keep the bike from 'getting away' on its own! :D

Seems like i didn't phrase my question well enough.

I plan on being able to lock at both extremes (left and right). The question is, does the STOCK Spyder allow you to lock in the center, and if so, does anybody care to keep this feature?

The hole in the center of the 'tongue' that is used for locking looks like it might be there for center locking... but I can't test it because I already have the RT riser in place.

The Spyder does not allow locking in the center position, only at full left and full right turn. I think that the locking pin can try to extend in any position but the holes that lock the bars only line up at full left and full right turns.

Yes...it doesn't lock in the middle...

VT, I apologize if this sounds rude but I am having trouble understanding your post. Are you saying that someone was using the 3 inch billet aluminum riser and it was cracked and that caused an accident? He is in ICU that is pretty serious. Do you know the extent of his injuries? At least he is well enough to know he wants to ride again. Have they determined without a doubt that the cause of the accident was the 3 inch riser? I hope I got all of this correct. I will pray for his complete recovery.

Wonder if it could be this one? The steering stem is definitely cracked in half (picture #20 down from the top). But it doesn't have the riser we are discussing, as far as I can tell.
