I found riding in the tow mode (not towing) enables quicker downshifts - I dont have to manually downshift as much-any ones opionions / thoughts on this.

Sounds right. What exact thought or opinion are you wanting?

If you're asking whether or not you can just ride around in tow mode all of the time. Sure why not? It might drop your gas mileage slightly, but if it gives the machine a response that more closely matches your needs/desires, then by all means keep it in that mode. I can see no harm done mechanically.

Agree
My ST was in tow mode all the time, no harm done. I always thought it let the revs get way too low before downshifting when not in tow mode. Generally I do my own downshifts but often-times I wanted to change right where tow mode wanted to change, so I let it do its own thing more often.

SE5? If so  the "Trailer" mode changes the parameters of shift patterns, if you watch the RPM's closely that is. & will affect your gas mileage but nothing severe, especially without actually towing anything. Supposedly affects braking too, might just be in combination with the passenger pillion switch :dontknow: strap a sandbag or something on there to test if you like.
