No, not a deer screaming ;)

It has good reviews. The maker claims that deer can't hear ultrasonic sounds, so they use an audible one. The selling point for me was the review from a police officer (Martin Lincoln) that wrote after they put these things on their cruisers they went from eight deer strikes a year to none.

Many years ago I was traveling from Flagstaff to Mesa AZ on a Goldwing. I had two deer whistles mounted beneath the headlight. Very early morning and traveling about 65. There were several deer grazing along the side of the road. They didn't even lift their heads to look at me. I have found that CW music cranked a bit coming from the fairing speakers gets as much attention as anything else.....

It is true, deer can not hear ultrasonics. We have a BIG problem here in Kansas with deer strikes - especially during rut. I have considered making a device that plays deer distress sounds through a front mounted set of waterproof horns (speakers). Each would be focused on one side of the road at about 100 yards ahead. The faster one would go, the louder they would be.

Maybe someday - - -

I've had one on all my vehicles and haven't hit a deer yet. I live in a heavy deer area. They seem to take notice of me without moving? I'm not just knocking on wood, I banging on wood! :)

Actually: that might really startle them! (assuming that they perceive the threat to be real...) They might just take off in ANY direction, and you could get run over by them!
It's actually best to provoke a reaction of curiosity... It'll make them look up; but not take off in a dead-run!

I put them on all my vehicles, hit three deer when I did not have them on, and none when I have. Do they work :dontknow: but I figure for the price, I am not losing much! Lowering your speed at dusk and dawn (when we see more) helps for avoidance also! JMHO!

Putting cow magnets on your car's fuel line to improve gas mileage? It worked out very well for the manufactures of cow magnets. Just like all these super duper fishing lures that are designed to catch more fish. They're actually designed to catch fishermen, not fish, and they do a pretty good job of what they were designed to do. $$$$$$$ nojoke

One thing I'll say about the deer whistles is the number of cars that I've seen that have hit a deer and still had a whistle on the undamaged area of the bumper. It's very large. They were all the rage quite a while back and it seemed everybody had them. I don't think it even put a small dent (pun intended) in the autobody repair business. Their popularity has dropped a large amount because of this.

I've never had them and never will. I've driven, quite literally, hundreds of thousands of miles for work with the bulk of it being second or third shift, through one of the most highly deer populated areas of the state. I've never hit a deer. I've had a few close calls, but by driving defensively, including about 5 MPH slower at night, I've avoided any physical contact with deer.

It's nothing to see anywhere from 4-5 deer on a drive home to close to 45 deer at night. That's why I drive a little slower. It only adds maybe an extra minute or two to the trip, but saves a lot of time by not having to get my vehicle repaired.

If the whistle was attached to an undamaged piece of the car: it must have repelled the deer from that particular area! :D

It is hard to know if it works since it's meant to prevent an incident. The manufacture claims that most of the whistles don't work because they use ultrasonic sounds. I would not depend on it, but for $10 I will try it.

We taped small thin strips of white plastic garbage bag material on and around the front of the vehicle, on the sides and on the hood, and drove it down the road at various speeds along with an observation vehicle being driven in front. In short, the air in front of the test vehicle seemed to move like the water in front of a boat. The strips of plastic just bounced around in all directions. There was no consistent flow. The strips of plastic taped on the hood nearest the windshield pointed forward. :yikes: The strips along the sided of the vehicle pointed to the rear of the vehicle indicating a better and more consistent flow of air. So, what we concluded was that the best and most consistent air flow was not on the front of the vehicle but along the sides of the vehicle. I've never seen any vehicle with the deer screamers stuck on the sides, they are always on the front.

True, but how will he know if the whistle is working? A daily report of no deer encounters?

Am I being too literal here?
