Is this the one that they call "Puff: The Magic Dragon"?

Or was that just an earlier version of what this is?

I like big guns. But are those beards regulation?

Bob, Puff was the C-47 used in Viet Nam. The one pictured is a modified C-130.

Thanks, Ron!

But they both accomplished the same goad: put LOTS of ordnance on-target!

Here is a great description of the various gunships in Viet Nam. I was witness to one pass of one of the early versions. In just one pass alongside a very dense jungle trail there was absolutely nothing left above several inches in height after Puff made her pass. Also witnessed one flare drop over the coast. Best fireworks show ever!

Another one of my favs. The A 10 is interesting because the top brass hates it because it's not sexy. But hey, sexy is in the eyes of the beholder.

I think that is Photoshop'ed on. No way that is regulation.

May not be sexy, but it's probably the best "tank" killer and CAS (close air support) aircraft built.

That is a special ops plane and airmen are special ops personnel. Depending on exactly where the plane is based and what contingency plan they are supporting they may be allowed to have beards.

OK Folks, enough with the unobtanium. Let's come back down to earth!

A bunch of patience, a bit of thinking outside the box, and 5 target loads later the 105 year old SxS is still intact. I think I may have to actually use it occasionally.

When I was in it was the Commanding Officer's approval whether you could grow a beard or not. Interestingly, the same did not hold true for mustaches so there were some beauties aboard.

Military policy on beards has fluctuated over the centuries. So much for 'traditional' military appearance!

And the pilots absolutely love 'em. These plane bring them home even when they are all shot to hell.

The foremost reason against beards aboard ship was because beards do not allow proper sealing of breathing apparatus. For that reason all members of damage control were not allowed to wear beards. Other sailors had a choice depending upon the CO.
