I spent a month touring Russia in 1993. I can attest to the camaraderie the Russian people feel for Americans and they love our culture. They would be great allies if we could just get the politics out of the way.

Being of Russian heritage ( Ukrainian ) on my mothers side-------- It would be nice if our to countries could be allies. But it won't happen unless the Mars attacks.

I'll bet you can see Russia from your back porch, no?

No ---- the back porch faces the wrong direction----- But from the top of Mt Rose ( about 11,000 ft ) I can see Valdavastock on a good day.:joke::joke::joke::joke:.

Ya see now that Pete and I can :joke: around without getting political or pi$$y.

I flew back to the US on Aeroflot from Vladivostok. If I'd known it was that close ... nah, I'd still take Aeroflot ... those pilots land like it's a bombing run ... once airborne, it's like a big party with the passengers passing around vodka and black bread and garlic and salt and some other stuff I didn't recognize

Only our former governor (Minnie Pearl)--and she lives 25 miles further than I do. :roflblack::roflblack:

Wonderful people. Thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ulan Ude (on the Trans-Siberian railway!), then Vladivostok.

I was reading the Telegraph (UK) online the other day & up popped an ad for the Trans Siberian Rly. Moscow to Beijing in a private railcar. $6,000 - $18,000US for the 16 day journey depending on the class of your accommodation. You pass through Ulan Ude & Ulan Bator.
I wasn't tempted at my age, but it would be a fascinating trip.

I was fortunate to be able to travel with a Russian companion on a business visa, which gave me free reign to avoid the tourist hotels and pricing structure. It's a lot cheaper for Russians!
