On my late-afternoon ride today a cicada managed to evade my windshield and hit me square in the visor of my full-face helmet at about 50 mph. It snapped my head back and I had to stop to clean up. I considered taking a picture of the "aftermath" on my helmet, but thought it was too soon to be banned from the Forums.

A Praying Mantis is the only insect that will turn its head to look at you. :yikes:

I've had two incidents with junebugs, the first hit me in the throat at around 80 mph, had to stop, couldn't breathe right for about 5 minutes. The second hit the back of my left hand about an inch below the knuckles, carried the scar for years, and won't ride without gloves.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to be as prevalent as they were when I was a kid.

I agree. As a kid we seen many katydids and praying mantis. I only live 25 miles from where I grew up, and can't remember the last time I've seen either one.

I do believe the praying mantis is protected.

The Praying Mantis is not a protected species. This has been a rumor for as long as I can remember. I first heard the rumor when I was about 10 years old, I'm 68 now.
