Spare Key

There has been a lot of discussion about who does spare Spyder keys and what needs to happen along the way. Here is my story:

Visited my local dealer and had them order a blank ($60 for 2016 RTL).

Took the trike and original key in to dealer and they cut and programmed the spare ($73 incl tax). Took about 30 minutes.

They insisted they needed both key and trike in order to program although I have read that some don't.

Spare works fine. $133 total.

That's correct. When getting another OE BRP key, no matter the model year the Spyder must be present. It needs to programed to accept the new key. Do not confuse making a clone key for 2013 and earlier models, by a locksmith. In that case the Spyder is not needed.

Just for grins, the service guy told me he recently had to replace his key/fob for his late model Toyota pickup. $400! Don't know if that is true but that is quite a key!

Also, just cutting a spare key is one operation but does not result in a key that can be used to start the Spyder. It must hold a transponder and must be programmed as well. You can get a spare that opens the trunk, frunk and gas cap but it will not authorize the Spyder to start.

For 2013 and earlier. All keys must be run through the programing step or they will no longer start the Spyder. On 2014 and later. Not sure. Don't have access to the service manual right now.

On 2014 and later, no. However, if you are replacing a lost key you need to take them all so the ID code for the lost one can be deleted from the DESS. If you don't have all of them with you the tech can't know which one is the lost one.

Also, the keys themselves are not programmed as part of the process. The DESS is programmed to recognize the ID code of the new key.

Or turn DESS off and then a standard flat key without a chip works fine. Nice to carry a spare in your billfold. Just in case.
