Greetings all - just joined this wonderful site!

I am looking at buying an RT between 2012 and 2014. Historically, has there been a year in this grouping with more "problems?"

Cheers.

Since you're shopping in the "2012 to 2014" marketplace: I's suggest that you take a closer look at the 2014 bikes. :2thumbs:
This was the model year that changed everything! nojoke

I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU CONSIDER ONLY THE 1330's.....
THE 'RT' IS A BIG BIKE, AND NEEDS THE EXTRA POWER..... AND SO FAR, PROBLEMS ARE RELATIVELY 'ZERO'....

This has been discussed quite a few times, if you do a search on the subject you'll find lots of info. The short version is that the 2012 Rt is considered the best twin, the 2013 had lots of heat problems and the 2014 has the triple engine and is very good with a few a few issues with e DESS system.

While :agree: with this assessment: a 2013 that has had all of the heat attenuation protocols performed might just be the best "998".

There is currently a thread in the General Discussion Area that is discussing the purchase of a leftover ST... If you read through it: you'll find all of the reasons for taking a closer look at a "1330" bike.

You are correct Bob. We have the 13 RTL and my wife just drove it 1000 miles on Saturday into 95 degree heat. There had been times before the recalls when she would have heat issues before, but since that recall she said that Saturday that the ryde was cool!

The bottom line as answered above.

If going with a twin, 2012 is probably your best bet. I have 24,000 miles on my 2011 and no issues.

If you want a triple you will need to do the 2014 and up. So far, no major issues with the triples. I have 24,000 miles on mine.

Test driving is still the best bet. That way, you will be getting what you like best.

to everyone for their replies and help - decisions, decisions, decisions. I am in Ontario and there is a 2013 RT with low kms and a decent price so I am tempted - no 2014s on the radar and my "waiting" patience level is very low :)

I just purchased mine a few weeks ago, I was set on a used 2014 or newer with the 1330 inline triple Rotax engine, could not find one, at least pretty close to me. Now I test drove a 2013 998 and to me it had plenty of power, but I was not allowed to bring my wife with me because I didn't have the official motorcycle endorsement on my drivers license. I ended up buying a new 2016 with $6500 off retail, the other 2 I found used 400 miles away were $500 and $900 less, used. Good Luck.

If you have the money and can find an exceptionally nice 2014 RT-S or RT Limited, I would say, go for it. The 2012 RT-S5 didn't have the problems that the 2013 had. But at the same time, it wasn't the most fuel efficient of Spyders. It was, and is, faster on acceleration. But the 2014 and newer are quieter, smoother, more fuel efficient, and have more torque. My wife and I have the 2012 Spyder RT-SE5 at the moment, and have been personalizing it as money permits, but will trade it for a metallic red, 2016 RT Limited. As soon as practicable.
