water ran over the emergency spillway last week. there is a major hole in the spillway and lots of erosion that has happened. Orville is supposed to get a whole lot of rain this weekend and that does not bode well of those who live down river.

thoughts and prayers to those who live in and around this area.

Cause it's raining buckets here in San Diego about an inch an hour and it's worse up that way. Hope they can re-route....they should have upgraded the dam rather than spending money on that bullet train....:banghead::banghead:

the state of CA has known there are problems for years with the dam. they have taken some of funds that should have been used to repair and upkeep the damn and squandered them away over the years. the drought the state had would have been the perfect time to fix some of those issues but nooooo .. they didn't do it. now its time to pay the piper and boy howdy it's going to cost them big time.

and you are correct. Governor Moombeam has his pet project of the bullet train to nowhere. how they put clowns like that in office and continue to vote for him is beyond me.

taken from the Washington Post:

Charlie Kirk, founder of conservative student group Turning Point USA, fired off a meme Monday saying, “California Governor Jerry Brown (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/jerry-brown/) spends $25 billion per year to support illegal immigrants/I wonder how much Governor Brown (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/jerry-brown/) spent to maintain the Oroville Dam (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/oroville-dam/)?”

it appears Governor Brown prefers to support "illegals" versus protecting KALIFORNIA taxpayers...

The roof doesn't need fixing when it's not raining! :gaah:

I'm just glad all those folks downstream have gotten to return to their homes.

Well....

I was thinking the same thing. But didn't want to be the one to make this a political thread.

Since you did, I'm wondering if the current administration will hold back any federal aid. :dontknow:.

The problem is that if that dam breaks, there is not a very sufficient warning system in place. This is another thing that people have been screaming about to the state but again it falls on deaf ears.

I am afraid if it fails, there is going to be loss of life up and down the river.

Now there forecasting 10+” of rain....:yikes:

If I lived below that dam, I'd be in a hotel tonight.

News said they would have about a hr to evacuate if things really went bad. No way in hell can they get 250,000 people out of harm's way in a hr.

I left Cal 25 years ago and never looked back. They elected Gov. Moonbeam ------ TWICE Not that the Terminator was any better. The bloated state government wasted taxpayer funds and has not done the infrastructure maintenance that needed to be done. The folks below the Oroville Dam ( as far down stream as Sacramento if the dam failed) are now paying for the states poor management. What's next ----- a bridge failure, gas pipe rupture ( that happened 12 people died), freeway collapse during an earthquake ( poor civil engineering at the state level ( over 50 people died)

Governments ( federal, state and local) waste our tax dollars on the wrong things:banghead:

And it causes:::::::::::::: Kaos

The citizens of Cali will take care of this, I only hope they all get on the same page before its to late. Not going to knock any one. Just get it done ,Show the rest of the country just how resilient you are.

For those of us who live in northern Kalifornia there's a movement taking place and gaining momentum everyday. It's called "The State Of Jefferson." Some other folks want to call it Calexit. In short, a number of northern Kalifornia counties and some southern Oregon counties want to pull together and form a new state. The plan has been tried several times before but for whatever reasons they have failed. The last time WWII brought kink to the works. It all stems from the seemingly lack of representation in the state legislature. The Orville Dam situation may well prove that to be a valid point. By the way, it's not the dam that poses a threat, it was the emergency spillway which was eroding away that spurred the evacuation. The lake level is now below the danger stage by about 50 feet, so, most of us are sleeping well for the moment.

We continue to have rain here, but the good news is that the lake has dropped over 50 feet so at least that area is looking better. Next area of concern is the Toualmne River that will be rising as they will be required to let water out and of Lake Don Pedro for the first time ever. We are getting hard today and tomorrow with some let up expected later in the week.

That is scary, don't see how this is going to have a good (inexpensive) ending. Best of luck.

I have heard it said that a "Dam is only as good as it's spillways" -- I remember when Oroville Dam was built (grew up in NoCal) and I also remember big statements about it's size that the fact that it was the tallest EARTHEN dam in the country. Today, I still hear that it is it the tallest ... but no mention of the fact that it is made of EARTH (dirt). So, IMHO, if either one (or God forbid) both of those spillways fail .... I do not believe it bodes well for the dam overall.

If I lived downstream of Oroville Dam, I would only have gone "back home" to pack up and leave until ALL danger of spillway (er ... Dam) failure has passed.

As other's have pointed out .... this was / is an avoidable disaster; if the warnings of a decade ago had been headed and acted upon. BOTH spillways were deemed inadequate and the State was told to concrete the emergency spillway or risk losing it in the event of a lake filling rain.

Sigh .... I pray for those affected by all this rain. Oroville is not the only location is serious trouble ... major highways and secondary roads are just GONE in the Santa Cruz mountains. At one time, Hwy 9, Hwy 17 and Hwy 35 (Skyline) were closed due to road collapse or mudslide.

All the best ....Ann

Hi Spyder_Cowgirl,

Re: I would only have gone "back home" to . . .

I was watching the news today & Maxwell is flooding with roads closed.

So I moved my trip to SoCal & Arizona back from leaving this Friday to leaving maybe next Friday; weather dependent.

The Bear Flag, which first appeared as the symbol of theshort-lived Bear Flag Republic in 1846, was made the official flag ofCalifornia in 1911. The flag displays a California grizzly bear which, in a bitof irony, is extinct in California with the last sighting taking place in 1922.

Without any disrespect towhat was a magnificent animal, perhaps it is time for a new emblem that moreaccurately reflects the current state of the state. Let’s consider the OrovilleDam as a more appropriate symbol. It’s large, not functioning well, parts arecrumbling and it is putting the lives and property of thousands of Californiansin jeopardy. To top it off, for over a dozen years, officials have beenignoring warnings that the now eroding emergency spillway was vulnerable to heavyrains.

Since the dam came on line in the late 1960s, and especiallybeginning with the first terms of Gov. Jerry Brown, California has shifted froma state that prioritized infrastructure improvement to one that focuses onentitlement programs, public employee compensation and environmental policiesthat stifle economic growth.
