6, but I don't agree with #6. 30 ÷ by.1/2 is not 60.... common core at its finest.:dontknow: but I get the trick...

:hun: Not that it really means much, but did Bill Gates get 3 correct? Or 3 in-correct?? :dontknow:

Me, I'm with NavyVet - maybe it's something to do with the Navy background & the way we learn to look at things? Altho I'm sure that I'm not ryding enough!! :banghead: :sour:

If you simply think of it as "How many 1/2s, can you fit into 30: it makes sense...
Old Math: VERY old Math! :D
Since we all have calculators handy: divide 30 by .5, and see what pops up.

Well.

My wife tried explaining it to me, but I just can't figure out how you can divide something, and get a higher #?

Next you'll be telling me 30 x 2 = 15.....:gaah:

You're looking at it wrong.

If you asked a cashier to give you change for 30 One Dollar Bills in 50 cent pieces, you would be dividing each dollar by 1/2. You would end up with 60, 50 cent pieces in the deal. If the cashier gave you 15, 50 cent pieces for your $30.00 you'd be pretty upset.

I got all 11 right. It's simply a matter of perspective and reading the questions literally instead of interpreting them according to the common language we use every day.

But I do have an issue with the ark question Actually, Noah brought 7 of each sex of the 'Clean' animals (those used in sacrifice) onto the ark. So they got 1 wrong with the inaccurate question. However, the answer would still be the same.

This is easy... just like Ron said:
Take a piece of paper, and cut it into 30 small pieces.
(Actually: this would be one, divided by 30...)
Now take each of those thirty pieces of paper, and cut them in half... (That's dividing by two...)
How much of mess do you have on the table in front of you? :D

That's right: 60! :thumbup:

I think taking 2 aspirin and watching a sitcom will solve the problem! :thumbup:

For what it's worth...
(but I hafta agree with Bob that this is nowhere near as entertaining as watching someone divide 30 squares of paper into 60 1/2 sized pieces :roflblack: )

30 divided by 1/2 .... or 30/(1/2) [B]Buuut - Wasn't the old rule to make things easier about 'Reducing when dividing by Fractions' = 'invert the fraction before multiplying'?

Sooooo, if we are going to do that, it gives us something like this:

30/(1/2) - but now we know (remember) the 'make it easier' rule = invert the fraction & then multiply it out, which means it now shows as;

= 30 x 2/1;

= (30 x 2) / 1 (& since 30 x 2 = 60 but we've still got the 'divide by 1' to reduce that means);

= 60/1 -- & since one set of 60 anything still = 60, the answer hasta be;

= 60

1/2 is 1 divided by 2, which equals .5, so 30 divided by .5 equals 60.
